I want to know if this tells me anything? black residue on the filter, where the oil breather hose hits the filter box?

It would take further testing to confirm any problem. Could be as simple as neglect, short trips, cheap oil, etc. If you want to dig deeper start with a compression test. In the meantime change the oil, oil filter and air filter.

Lots of oil vapor produced when running as baffling is non-existent and only the wire mesh in the oil cap exists to separate it out. Cleaning this mesh should be part of oil change service. I just remove it and spray carb cleaner through, no need to disassemble like this pic.

The spot on your air filter is the "push" direction of flow on the large hose when running medium to high loads.

If you look at VOD pictures online you'll see most of the intake surfaces are always coated in oil/grease due to this design, like this (http://delorean6360.blogspot.com/2010/03/12-september-2009-into-valley-of-death.html)

Right. Filter - just a consequence of design/normal operation. Oil - my entire engine is coated in a 1-2mm layer of oil and dust. I was sort of wondering where all the oil came from. As I understand your reply, it doesn't have to be a leaking gasket, it can "just" be because of the design with the oil cap and the wire mesh in the cap. Which btw, brings up two more questions:

Is there a clip to hold down the oil filler cap securely? (mine is a little loose even with new O ring)
Is there a premium version of the mesh/filter in the oil cap somewhere? (this seems like a correctable flaw)

Anyone?

The whole crankcase ventilation system is kind of weak. I doubt it's solvable by changing out the separator matrix.

Adding a catch can will help but you can't eliminate it entirely unless you remove the crankcase ventilation system from the intake entirely. That would require an external vacuum pump & catch cans and be way more trouble than it's worth for a stock-ish, non-turbo K-jet car.

You’re propably right about that. Maybe I can start by bending my own clip from som SS wire and see if that helps. :)
