Spare tire rattle

I think I found the cause of my fuel pump making to much noise when it runs. This is not the hot gas whine but vibration. My spare tire the rim just sits on the "glass" body location. The tire strap does nothing to hold it down. When I hit the tire by hand it just makes a loud buzz. So it looks like I need to put some kind of foam padding in four locations where the rim hits. Some rubber would also work but it can't be to thick since not much extra room in the tire well.

Well I found some perfect foam to use at the hardware store. It's really great that the tire locks down solid and will not move but that did not stop the loud fuel pump running noise.

I did the exact same thing. I didn't like how the tire was able to move around under cornering. I work at a lot of dealerships and many new cars have small foam blocks on the door edges when they are shipped in to prevent damage. These are usually thrown away but I snag them because one can always find a use for small closed cell foam blocks with an adhesive already on it.

Especially DeLorean owners....I put that shit everywhere.

I put an old towel there folded up. Useful if you ever need to get on the ground under the car to do something too. Can also be used so you can put a flat tire on the engine cover. I also keep a large plastic garbage bag and a bungee cord inside the spare along with a can of tire inflator. If you put the spare in "upside down" you can store stuff inside the rim.

There is no upside up or upside down for the spare tire. I did that because as delivered the tire came with the valve facing up which you can call "upside up". Kind of like electrical outlets, there is no "correct" way to install them but some people think if the ground lug is "up" the outlet is upside down. The only reason I can figure the tire valve is facing up is that it helps to support the cardboard and carpet if you have heavy stuff in the frunk. The quotes are for emphasis.

Agreed. Change out that rubber if you expect the spare to hold air with the weight of the car on it.

This was a popular replacement for a while and what I bought. Looks to be out of stock now though.
