Need to be replaced. Better to source used good condition factory ones. Stay away from the Chinese aftermarket units. Higher failure rate than stock.

I purchased a set of aftermarket yesterday, but I can still cancel. Paying Volvo $500+ for rockers isn’t exactly in my budget at the moment.

Available from MTC and Febi for Volvo cars. Both aren’t really good brands at all, but it’s my only option. I called a Volvo dealer to check availability on the updated aluminum rockers p/n 271617, but I was unable to get a solid answer if they were available. And at $46 each, it would be quite steep for a full set.

After removing the valve covers from the original 2.8, I found the rockers had already worn down and eaten the cam. The engine only had 24k miles, so it seems like the original rockers were pretty much trash to begin with…

Not to turn this into an engine oil thread, but is this the type of wear that happens due to lack of zinc (zddp) in modern oils?

I've been running Valvoline VR-1 for that reason, which has higher zinc content. Extremely high levels are apparently bad for the catalytic converter, but I don't believe that VR-1 exceeds the amount of zinc used in conventional oils of the 80's era.

The part that contacts the camshaft.

The coating wore away enough to damaged the 2.8 cams.


I’m just going to use aftermarket. Why? The manual rockers can be replaced without head removal. Just loosen all adjusters and tap out the shaft.

And if I ever have cam damage in the future, I’d rather pull the engine to replace rather than pull the head and risk disturbing the liners.

Got the aftermarket MTC rockers.

They are made in India and look to be well made. Guess time will tell.
