This whole fictional timeline of the DeLorean motor company is a confusing mess. None of those alpha cars look like they have anything to do with the original DeLorean brand, and this fake legacy shits all over the idea of "what could have been" had DMC continued to exist. (DMC24 excluded.)

Instead of showing a logical series of steps from the original design to today, this fake series of prototypes comes off more as a post-hoc justification of why the Alpha 5 looks nothing like the original DeLorean.

Hyperlink to the MSN story is also here (https://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/news/delorean-shows-three-concepts-depicting-decades-of-fictional-evolution/ar-AAZY2xP?cvid=8f9cbca0d1674e939602790349b78366).

DMR's "Generational" info posted to their site (https://delorean.com/generational/) yesterday.

Agreeing with Mark D about their "backdated-from-the-present" Alpha design studies.

They did name their company DeLorean Motors Reimagined. So they're delivering on the imagination aspect.

This "New DeLorean" is indeed shitting all over the original car, name, and enthusiasts that kept that name alive. Talk about trying to rewrite history…

DMCH hasn’t been able to even produce new binnacles or glovebox inserts for years. The only thing that keeps them alive is that they own many unique NOS parts (doors) and drawings.

Nowadays, I try to only place orders with DPI and DeloreanGo.

It's baffling how they could have possibly thought any of this fake legacy timeline stuff was a good idea, especially right before the official launch of the Alpha 5 at Pebble Beach. They couldn't have muddied the waters any more if they had tried.

Rather than promote the new car that exists, they release a bunch other fictional prototypes that look similar but aren't real? Just WTF are they thinking that would accomplish?

-Best case scenario, they could have linked the design of Alpha 5 to the original DMC design language and shown some evolution from A to B.

-Worst case, and what appears to actually be happening, is that people are confusing these non-existent concepts with the actual Alpha 5. For example, Instagram is full of people shitting on the 90's prototype thinking that is what currently going to be offered.

In addition to the above, for the people that actually understand that these are 'what if' concepts, it opens the door to comments like "should have built this one instead of the Alpha 5" etc.

Seems like the DMC marketing department has found a very unique way of shooting themselves in both feet.

Odd how this is the first this Delorean community has ever seen anything besides Johns sketches of the Firestar 500. I just looked over the delorean.com website and I'm baffled. Are they really depicting a completely false story of a "what if Delorean never failed" kind of history? Like someone went back in time, changed the past, and now we're all in an alternate future? Sounds familiar.

That’s what I was thinking. I don’t care what you build, there are some people that will love it and some that will hate it. Why you want to show cars that someone might love more than the car you’re selling is stupid.

Are they depicting a completely false story? Maybe. Or maybe maybe not exactly that or at least not with malicious intent.

I think I understand what they're doing.

If you watch DMR's "reveal" interview with DeLoreanTech (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uohQ3-YXkk) from May 29, 2022 you will hear them explain* that they were going to do something like this soon and that they had a reason for it. At the time their DeLorean Generational webpage tab existed only in concept. Now they've fleshed it out, which is what we're talking about here.

*Time stamp (hr:min:sec) for their explanation from that YouTube video:

1:41:15 until 1:46:30 - The DeLorean Generational timeline is covered by DMR's Neilo Harris and Troy Beetz.

Nielo first explains the basics of "The Hidden Timeline" page that existed as a blank graphic on Reveal Day.
Troy goes further to say "It'll all make sense", and something along this line: "In 10 years someone can look back and see the how the various Generational concept vehicles led to the next 3 DMR cars beyond the Alpha5 that are planned to show up after 2025."

That's a reference to the Alpha2 barchetta/roadster, the Alpha3 luxury sedan and the Alpha4 SUV. So their Generational story looks more like a way to tease those next 3 cars while connecting them, however loosely, to the classic DeLorean vibe.

Will the popular media will understand the subtlety of the Generational timeline and how it connects to their story? I'm sure DMR will address that at Pebble.

I suspect it's how DMR wants to set expectations and generate excitement around things to come. They say they're planning for the long haul.

Had an arguement on reddit with james espey on this lmao. Isnt it sad that hyundia can release a concept that feels more like a delorean than dmc can? lmao, so many people are talking in my car circles about the n vision 74. Know how many even know of the new dmc? none.

Does anyone have an ELI5 on the connection between classic DMC, and whatever this DMR is? Is DMR licensing the DMC brand from Classic DMC to build these new cars? Is Steve W involved with this new Delorean at all? I'm so out of the loop on this stuff, and honestly have no desire to watch a long video hoping it explains things.

I don't know, but your question raises an annoying matter for me. There is no company named "DeLorean" (at least, that has an automotive connection), but all the media coverage fuzzes this matter, just talking about "DeLorean" as a company. One may debate whether this was intentional.

It's complicated, and even after reading half a dozen press releases, I can't say that I fully understand. It would be great if someone from "DMC Classic" or whatever it's called now, would clarify if the below is correct:

From what I can gather: DeLorean Motors Reimagined LLC, was the original name of the startup company for the new car. It combined Joost de Vries' team and DMCH owned by Stephen Wynn. But as of Feb 2022 it's been renamed back to "DeLorean Motor Company". What was the old "DeLorean Motor Company" (AKA DMC Houston) is now DeLorean Classic, a division of the new, new "DeLorean Motor Company"

Here are some of those press releases, first from when DMR LLC was formed:

https://www.autoevolution.com/news/delorean-motor-company-has-associated-with-karma-automotive-for-its-new-ev-181636.html

To begin with, DeLorean Motor Company is now DeLorean Motors Reimagined LLC. Its CEO is Joost de Vries, the same man who was the VP for global sales at Karma Automotive until August 2021. On his LinkedIn profile, he now states he is the CEO of DeLorean Motors Reimagined. He has been with the new company since December 2021. De Vries also included in his LinkedIn profile the sentence “The Future Was Never Promised,” which seems to be the motto for the new company.

We have learned that thanks to Troy Beetz, the CMO (chief marketing officer) for the new Delorean. He also worked for Karma Automotive until February 2022. Stephen Wynne, who used to run the Texan DeLorean Motor Company, is now in charge of the Classic DeLorean division of the company. Beetz promised to share more information soon.

In other words, we will have the classic DeLorean vehicles and a new car.

And Later after Feb when DMR LLC was renamed just to "DeLorean Motor Company"

https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1135327_reimagined-electric-delorean-will-be-a-driver-s-car-not-a-time-capsule-execs-say

It's been more than 40 years since the DeLorean hit the streets in its original form. Now, plans from a Texas-based group call for a modern DeLorean—one that's recast as an electric car.

Set to debut in concept form with a production-intent design on Aug. 21 during Monterey Car Week in Pebble Beach, California, the as yet unnamed DeLorean will be a reimagined electric coupe for the modern era, according to CEO Joost de Vries.

The new DeLorean Motor Company incorporated in Delaware on Feb. 28 of this year. That’s the same company name John DeLorean used to produce the DMC-12 in the late 1970s. But the new DeLorean won’t be a continuation car, and de Vries told Motor Authority it won't be a copy and paste from the past.

The company’s headquarters will be based out of Port San Antonio, Texas. De Vries said the company plans to become a full-line OEM with more than just the electric coupe.

How we got here

In the 1980s, after DeLorean went bankrupt in 1982, Stephen Wynne repaired old DMC-12s and accumulated the trademarks and most of the surplus parts and assets of the former company in 1995. For many, that made him the steward of the DMC-12.

In 2017, Wynne’s company, Classic DeLorean, announced plans to reimagine the DMC-12. This was to take place under the cover of new legislation signed into law by President Barack Obama in 2015 that would allow the company to remanufacture up to 325 cars per year.

De Vries and his team originally planned to electrify and reimagine DMC-12 with Wynn’s company, Classic DeLorean. However, plans fell apart because the legislation wasn’t pushed through under the original timeline. Despite passing through congress and being signed into law by President Obama in 2015, the Low Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act of 2015 stalled until the NHTSA finally established regulations, which just went into effect in March.

After the original plan fell apart de Vries approached Wynne and said, Hey, why don’t we look at this much bigger? The executive believes DeLorean is strong enough as a brand that it deserves to be a new startup rather than a reimagined vehicle. “Truly a full line OEM,” he said.

But first, the new DeLorean needed a new look. The iconic DMC-12 was designed by Italdesign founder Giorgetto Giugiario. Giorgetto, and his son Fabrizio, never stopped penning DeLorean designs in their own time, according to de Vries. While a new car was never physically produced, data and drawings were created over the years quietly and are now being pulled out of drawers. ”It’s stuff the world has never seen,” de Vries said. Images will be shared over time to illustrate how the Giugiarios imagined the car would look today as it evolved over time.

Who’s funding this?

With the idea moving along, the topic of money came up next, naturally.

“You need a billion dollars to build an OEM, and that’s the minimum,” de Vries said.

DeLorean Motor Company is in the process of acquiring that money. The first round of funding came from accredited investors to make the company real. The second round is said to come mainly from institutional investors, while the third round will likely be loans, according to the CEO.

De Vries wouldn’t comment on how much money the first and second rounds of funding raised. However, Chief Marketing Officer Troy Beetz said the startup automaker is “well funded” for the current stage, though he noted the company will need to secure additional rounds of funding to advance the company’s larger plans.

For now, Classic DeLorean is the largest individual shareholder in DeLorean Motor Company.

De Vries said DeLorean Motor Company will go public at some point, explaining that once the formal paperwork is filed with the SEC the timeline is normally 16-18 months, which has yet to begin. The longer the company can stay private, the easier it will be to do the work without the scrutiny, de Vries said.

“Being public is not always a benefit,” he observed.
