Has anyone got a cross number for a common air cleaner for our engine? It looks pretty standard. I’m guessing there is another (common) car that has the same size. Would be nice if I could just go to the zone and pick one up.

Most of the Volvo or DeLorean Cross reference filters have been discontinued. Generally an air filter from a 2006 Ford Five-Hundred has the same dimensions as a DeLorean filter. Depending on the brand, some don't quite compress enough to fit in the air box. In those situations you can trim off a bit of the rubber gasket material and the filter will fit nice an snug.

Good to know. Hmmm, I don’t even know what a 06’ Ford 500 looks like. Lol. But I would assume it should be in stock some where. If not, those numbers Ron gave me should help.

I like K &N, but I believe they are more free flowing. I live on a dirt road that gets very dusty when it’s dry. On conventional vehicles, (front engine) it’s not a problem because the dust is all behind the air cleaner. The Delorean is bad for making dust off the front wheels that gets to the air cleaner. I have to bow out my engine compartment and the area between the hood and Louvers with compressed air regularly.

I was wondering if I was the only owner on a dirt road. Do you remove your air cleaner and blow it out every so often? Or do you just replace it? Either way, How often do you replace it?

You are not supposed to blow out "ordinary" air filters, the recommendation is to replace. The K & N ones CAN be cleaned, dried and re-oiled. In fact, they sell a kit to do it. Typically you do the air filter when you do a tune-up, around 10,000 miles. This is the recommendation for a car that is expected to do around 10,000 miles a year under typical driving conditions. Under severe conditions you service more often and because we drive the cars much less than 10,000 miles a year we do things time based and condition based, not mileage based. If you have very dusty conditions inspect the filter every 3 months and then decide it you need to do it more often or less often. You can use a soft brush and try to brush off as much as you can but once the filter "loads up" you are going to have to replace it. To inspect it use a light and see how it shines through when it's clean and then when it gets dirty you can estimate how bad it is getting. The best way to judge is to track your gas mileage and when you see it getting bad it is time to clean it.

I have the K&N filter on my truck. I also have and used the kit. But it is not practical on the Delorean operated on a dirt road. The intake on the truck is high up on the front and rarely gets dust unless I pass someone. I have only one mile to paved road without much traffic. If I drive the D out three times in dry weather, the air cleaner is full of dust. Of course I rarely drive it unless it’s dry weather, so it always gets dust. I’m thinking I might have to “stock” a number of air cleaners.

Just a note. My local auto parts stores (3 different ones) could do nothing with any of these numbers. A couple crossed to anther number, but that part did not fit. Might want to take those out of resources.

Not saying those numbers don’t fit. Some say they are discontinued or just don’t come up at all. They didn’t come up with any good numbers. Two of them crossed to a Wix number, but it was not the Wix number listed and the part didn’t fit anyways. One guy said he could find it for me if I give him dimensions. I will probably do that to see what he can find.

For now, I ended up ordering a couple from Houston.

I just googled Ford 500 air cleaner and all I get is round “carburetor type” air cleaners. What am I missing? Do you have a maf part #?

I went to Oriely’s and checked the air filter for a 2005’ Ford Five Hundred. (This is not to be confused with a Galaxy 500) It was the same width, but was about 1/4” longer. Tried I could, I could not get it in my air box. I thought about cutting it with a razor, but decided to check another brand. (Their brand was Magnaguard) I went to our generic auto parts store and got the same part made by Wix (#46924) It looked the same, but it was much easier to squeeze into the box and I was able to get the clips on.

I can’t say I like it, but in a pinch, it will work.

Ron, on those other part numbers, I can’t say any of them don’t work. I never had one with the listed manufacturer and number to try. I would not suggest deleting them because someone might walk in to a store that has one on the shelf for years. I think I would just put a note under them saying it’s not likly you can get them. You could also appeal to the forum to come up with new numbers.

I also think the “Ford Five hundred” info is worth listing with a note about its fit.

They are more than that now, but still cheaper than the Wix I just bought. ($23) I don’t plan on letting my stock go down in the future. Nice to help the venders. (They obviously are not gouging on these)

Depending on the brand some fit more snugly that others. I have had to trim the rubber seal to fix certain brands. It seems some come with a metal mesh on top. Those are fit tighter. Filters that do not have the mesh squeeze in much easier.

Thought I'd put my two cents in on this thread. I ordered a few parts from DMCH and threw an air filter in while I was at it. I have the K&N filter installed right now. The orange and yellow air filter I got from DMCH fit so poorly that I wasn't comfortable using it. The gasket on it simply doesn't line up and sit on the edge of the housing on all four sides. No matter how you try to install it, at least one side of it has a small gap allowing unfiltered air past it.

After a few minutes of fiddling with it I decided to put the K&N right back in.

Speaking of the K&N filter, the original kit that was sold by Midstate DMC in the early 2000's recommended installing the filter face-down in the housing (pleats sticking up) and there were two stainless brackets that helped to keep it in place and provide additional structure with the cover installed back over it.

Interesting Andy. I just installed a recently purchased stock/paper air filter from DMC and it fit perfectly.

Well I went back out to the garage to take some pictures of the difference in air filters. Prior to my K&N I used the OEM Crossland filters that the vendors sold, and those fit perfectly in the bottom half of the air cleaner box. The seal went all the way around and it was actually a bit difficult to close the air cleaner box because it was a thick seal and fit tightly.

The DMCH filter, which I know they don't make themselves so I'm not accusing anyone of that, fits poorly in the bottom half but if you place it in the top half, pleats up, cover down, it fits pretty well that way. But, I know when I am putting the bottom half back on that not all four sides are being squeezed tight. Is there an unfiltered air gap? Probably not. Is it as good as the Crossland filter? No.

There are videos online of the latest cross ref K&N filter that fits perfectly in the lower half, like the Crossland did. So maybe there is a better common filter out there than the one Houston is selling. I'm not sure. I won't spend more time on it because I just bought four more NOS Crossland filters online, which should last me a decade.

Anyway, tell ya'll what. I will run the Houston filter for a few months and see how it goes. I cleaned the air meter so I will know if any soil is passing the air filter and getting to the intake.

A few pictures of the basic Houston filter. As you can see it fits poorly in the lower half, but the last two pictures show it fitting OK in just the top half. But you know when you close the box that the top and bottom of the gasket are not being squeeze uniformly all around. Is it good enough? Maybe it is. Do I like it? No.

I'll send pics of the Crossland once I get it in.

As promised, here are some photo comparisons of the Crossland air filter, this is a period-correct service item that dealers would have sold, they were also sold by the DMC vendors until they became NLA, but I just grabbed four of them for a song so they are still out there.

Main difference is the pleats are wider so there is more surface area and it fills the lower half of the air filter housing better. The gasket is only slightly wider but the increased support by the pleats results in the filter fitting properly in the lower housing without falling inside.

I have not ordered one to test, but I believe the current air filter being sold is actually out of a newer Mercedes that uses 2 of them.

I wonder if it is either a bad batch from DMCH's supplier or your airbox as I have been using DMCH's filters for years (via MidWest and now DMCH TX) and haven't noticed any fit issues. I replace my filter every 7k and average 12k a year so I am not your average delorean driver.

Well, could be, I guess anything is possible but it's clear that the pleats are much narrower compared to the Crossland. I don't think anyone is DeLorean-Land is making their own air filters so any defect in terms of the gasket would have to be traced back to the original manufacturer. If you install the filter upside down into the top half first, I can see how someone would not realize the poor fit in the lower half. Check it out next time you're in there.
