At what point in the assembly process did a car receive its final VIN?

In most car companies a car gets a VIN when a build order has been placed by production control so the VIN is created as the paperwork for the factory is prepared. I can't tell you exactly how DMC did it though. In all car companies the "build sheet" which tells the factory how to build the car, ie, what options, colors, etc go into it has the VIN and travels along with each car as it is assembled. The technical answer to your question is the VIN is assigned BEFORE the car is even built.
