I was reading comments on the latest BAT offering and someone commented on antenna change over in sept 81 from fender to power antenna. Mine is Nov 81 build and I have both.
The power antenna was stuck at about the half way point when i got the car. It looks original and didnt work. I pushed it down out of site and forgot about it.
When i changed the head unit it was connected to the fender antenna.

Was just curious if anyone has seen one with both? Maybe po added after? Then maybe it broke and they switched back? It struck me as odd when i got the car but had much bigger fish to fry at that point...

Anomalies like this are not unusual. It could have happened at a QAC or a dealer or even a past owner. If it was my car I would fix up the rear, retractable antennae and get a S/S cap and remove the fender antennae. The "running production changes" do not seem to happen abruptly as of a certain date. IMHO they kept using up what stock they had and from that point they switched over. In your case the best guess is the power antennae broke and someone installed the fender antennae because it was less expensive.

My car is a Sept build with a antenna in front fender it's a manual collapsible. Many of the Sept cars that started production in August will probably have the fender antenna. At first I had plans of removing it but I've come to like it. I find the plug option more unsightly. Yes I know they can be welded and look very good. But when I'm with other owners and their cars and people start to gather and questions about the fender antenna are asked because mine is the only one. Well I'm just glad I can represent. But if owners choose to eliminate theirs that will make mine that much more special.
I say be proud of the so called anomalies.
If you can prove that your car came from the factory or QAC with options or anomalies it shouldn't have I think that would be very awesome.

Yes another Dave.

I think the conversation on the BAT auction spawned from that one guy's usual comment about fender antennas.

Can someone explain his habit of posting that comment? I gather he's trolling, right? But where's the joke? Some cars had different antennas - so what? I've never heard anything about it affecting the desirability of the car. What am I missing?

I went through some of the past sales particularly ones with a fender antenna. It seems like the poster does own a Delorean do to some past posts. And it seems like the poster was just asking why some cars have the front fender antenna. I have seen other posts in which people have made comments about the placement of the antenna and that it affects the price. But that person is not one of them. For disclosure I didn't go through every single one.
So for me I'm thinking the poster just doesn't know that there is a reason for this. And is not a troll. As we all know there are plenty of them. Then you just have the hatters. If that is the one you're referring to. I want nothing to do with hatters.

I had not studied his BAT posting history. My post here was just a quest for knowledge. almost 1.5 year of ownership and im trying to learn as much as I can about my specific car and also the history of the cars themselves. Thanks for the responses.

Thanks

Understood. And as per the BAT comments, it's all a big fuzzy. What I would say is that antenna and hood swaps are common, so quest for "originality" is sometimes in vain. However, trying to track down
the full history of your car can be very valuable too, so that's to be commended. But with a modern headset, you might not need an antenna at all.

Yeah, sorry - I wasn't saying anyone here was trolling! Just the guy on BAT who always says something like "Perfect DeLorean, if weren't for that fender antenna. That's really gonna bring down the price".

(I have a fender antenna, so maybe I'm just personally offended by the insinuation :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical:)

I think we all knew what you were saying.
I don't think one option has no more of an effect on price than any other. Even auto transmissions are in the upper price range now. This is my opinion from my point of view.

The main effect of price is mostly going to depend on condition and mileage. And auctions are always going to have anomalies.

If I was selling mine and someone is going to gripe about a certain option for getting a better price I'm going to tell them to kick rocks. I don't want them owning my DeLorean!

Thanks- The full history is what interests me.
I have all of these receipts, insurance cards, registrations ect from the original owner. Plus a box of all the delorean magazines(maybe 15 of them), and tons of other paperwork. There is over 30k worth of receipts before everything stopped. Based on mileage on some of the 10-15 year old receipts it appears this car then sat for a long period of time. I had only done a few hundred miles in the last 15 years before i got it. The the 2nd owner purchased it and did the seats and a few other things before he decided to sell.
I would love to track down original owner but am afraid to try. My guess based reciepts and mileage is that it was stuck in a garage for all those years and sold at an estate sale or something.

and yes, the antenna is pointless in this day and age. Mine is also a front retractable one that is pushed all the way down. the broken power one i will just leave in there for now. i have never used radio in the car.

Thanks again.

Dave..
I never took this sticker off either. i suspect its been on there most its life..
