Sealant needed on transmission bolts?

Hi,

When I took apart the transmission the long bolts that go all the way through holding the shaft bearings had some sort of sealant packed in from one side to the other, however none of the shop manuals say anything about sealing in those bolts. Do they need sealant? Or was a PO leak fix?

When you re-seal the case, you need to put anaerobic sealant on the case face right where you have them circled. So, not only around the perimeter of the case, but around the bolt holes and bearing faces too. You should also use Loctite green retaining compound such as 609 where the shaft bearings set.

Thanks Andy, but nothing in the bolt holes themselves, because it looked like they were packed with RTV or something?

It shouldn't be necessary if you get those faces sealed internally.
