Adding CarPlay to the Delorean: The Easy Way

For years I've wanted to have modern infotainment features in my Delorean. However, I don't want to go through the process to overhaul the center console with reversing the stereo & air vents or making wholesale changes to the car. What I've landed on is a portable CarPlay device. It runs off USB-C, has built-in speakers but can output via AUX or bluetooth, it's a wireless CarPlay unit, and can easily be removed when showing the car. This unit also supports Android Auto.

There's a boatload of units out there, but the one I settled on is this $80 Krunia branded 9.65" unit I found on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DNZMCN1R?th=1. This size is a near-perfect width for the center console and the suction cup mount is tacky, so it grips really well onto the dashboard. The unit comes with everything and while it runs off the cigarette lighter, I've tried it plugged straight into a USB plug and it seems to work without issue.

My entire sound system in my car needs an overhaul, so I generally just use a bluetooth speaker on the shelf and use my phone for my audio. This pairs up no problem with my iPhone and speaker. The sound routes great. So if you have some form of bluetooth or AUX capability in your car, this may be the dead-simple modern upgrade you're looking for.

That's a great alternative for a Minimalistic, non intrusive install! Great job!

I opted for the Vent Swapped Radio Bracket (Radio on top, Vents in center) and then used a Pioneer DMH-WT5000NEX (https://usa.pioneer/collections/receivers/products/dmh-wt5000nex) for all of my Wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay needs.

Looks great , like the minimal intrusion, I'm redoing my interior and changing the speakers at the moment so great timing , was looking for something along those lines

Wow that's really sweet! Any issues with it blocking the vents? It looks like the screen protrudes a bit taller than the DIN height. I like the look of this, though I guess it's that whole balance of trying to have modern amenities in the car vs keeping an 80s look. NGL, this is a tempting upgrade to do instead of a portable unit if I wholesale change out my stereo system. But the reviews of this thing are not that great with only 8 reviews and a 3.3 star rating. Glad your experience with it has been good.

I need to re-do my speaker system and get a new radio (I'm considering the RetroSound). How difficult are you finding it to change out the speakers? The PO of my car mounted 2 to the back of the firewall and they're tapped into the rear speakers (non-functional) somehow that I can't see. On the surface I'd think I'd just replace the speakers and use the existing wires, but we all know nothing is THAT easy on this car. :wink:

I guess it would be quite a reach, but another mounting option would be to hinge it to flip down from the front edge of the opened glove box lid - kind of like the plutonium gauges in Back to the Future.

The screen is maybe 1/4? taller than a single DIN (the internal part is a normal single DIN still). Doesnt come close to the vents, zero problem.

The front speakers were easy enough as they can be accessed under the dash and come out pretty easy but not nice lying upside down In the footwell to get at them. You need to be flexible lol .

The rears are harder as it depends on the condition of the rear speaker panels. Mine were not In good condition so I didn't mind cutting the vinyl overlap on the fibreglass lip as I was getting them recovered . But if yours are good you ll need to gently heat up the vinyl under the door seal to soften the glue and peel it back gently to not rip it. Then there s 3 or 4 small screws Holding it in 2 or 3 at the bottom underneath the armrest bolster and one usually at the top . It ll pop off then . The rear speaker is easily got to then.

I went with dgo speakers original size but Modern ones which will be more than good enough for my audio needs

The retro sound radio is definitely very nice have that on my wish list

A good tip when installing the front speakers is to use some long standoffs instead of regular nuts. Makes it much easier
