Over here in Europe, I don't get that many BTTF or cocaine jokes. It just seems that people (youngster or elder) are not that educated about the history of the DeLorean per se. Us fans know that BTTF kept the dream alive, and we fans know that the charges again JZD have been dropped..

From the history books it looks like JZD was a very well known person. How much of a superstar was he actually? Does he compare to a football star, or something like Bill Gates? Remember that those were the 80's, and internet was basically non existant.

He was very well known. Especially his wife Christina who was a model. He was so well known he was paid to advertise products. He was about as high up as anyone can get. And when he fell he fell almost as far as anyone can fall and not go to prison. He led a life most can only dream of. Owning his own car company, flying back and forth to Europe on the Concorde, rubbing elbows with the rich, famous, and powerful. He had it all. He had a mansion on the largest holding of private land in the State of New Jersey in Bedminster. The higher you are the farther you can fall!

There is history, and there is contemporary history, most people only really know the latter, and the Delorean story is inching away from contemporary history with each passing year.

I actually wrote my thesis paper for my B.A. on John DeLorean and the DMC, mostly from the perspective of the socio-political climate of Northern Ireland at the time (The Troubles were very bad, back then). I wrote a section on John DeLorean himself, and I did exhaustive research on him - he was indeed "a big deal" back in the day, and there are several books and good internet resources that you can read that would tell you far more than my little blurb here could be. I'll see if I can dig 'em up!

Is a comparison with Richard Branson anything like it? Or that character from IronMan, what's he called, Tony Stark?

Hi Michael,

I note your comments regarding the loss of history of the company in Belfast and for this reason I have been compiling information and details to publish what I hope is the definitive book on the company. I have spent four years writing the book which will be factual and not fantasy.

I started work for the company six weeks after the ground breaking ceremony in 1978 and left the company in early January 1983 when there were only ten of us remaining at the factory.

Be assured the details will not be lost - just delayed a few years until I can complete the script.

regards

Nick Sutton

Nick, consider me pre-ordered for that book.

I thought the Stainless Steel Illusion was a pretty decent book, especially when I first started looking more into the whole world of the DeLorean. If there is going to be an even better book, Nick, I can't wait. To be fair, though, would JZD's story be more sensational to American fans and those of us here in North America or does it ring just as strong over in Europe? I wonder....
