View Full Version : General Request: Measurement between engine cradle on frame and driveshafts

So, I should have taken this measurement when I was pulling everything off of the frame for my restoration/EV conversion of 16655 but did not- and trying to dig out all of the mounts and putting the transaxle back in just isn't practical. I've tried looking for pictures that would let me figure it out, but I've not found any that are a top-down shot with the body off that shows the axles relative to the other parts to be able to measure relative distances.

I'm at the point of needing to figure out exactly how I'm going to mount the motor/gearbox/inverter from the donor vehicle into the frame, and the main consideration is obviously making sure that the driveshafts/axles are in the right place. Since right now I have a bare frame, the best reference point is the engine cradle on the frame just behind where the axles attach to the transaxle, so I'm hoping someone can take the measurement for me. I'm primarily interested in the distance from the frame to the centerline of the axle attachment, but since this can be difficult if the axles are attached the distance from the frame to the attachment will work (since I can get the diameter of the attachment on the transaxle easily enough). Also useful would be a measurement- or just a picture- of the relative height of the axle attach on the transaxle relative to the frame.

Thanks!

Not sure axactly what you want. Here?s a couple pics. Not mine. Maybe you could point out from what to what.

These are from Supercool bill?s thread. You might look through it. He?s got a pic of everything.

Here's a fairly crude mark-up of the closest that I've found to a picture I could measure off of (I'm worried that since it's not dead-on from above that I'd be off though).

What is most important in placing the new drive unit is that the output shafts that connect to the drive shaft are in the right place, so I need to make sure that they're in the same location as the output shafts on the original transaxle.

Since when looking at it in a more 3D view getting a good measurement of that may be difficult, there are a few others that would work and are shown in the marked up image below-

The orange arrow is the distance from the frame to the bell housing/transaxle joint, or perhaps even easier (somewhat) would be the gap between the bottom of the bell housing and the frame, since the very bottom of the bell housing appears to hang down below the frame cradle.

Any of those will let me locate the output shafts relative to the frame and then line up the outputs shafts from the electric drive unit.

Ok, the measurement for the double arrow is 4?. I would say it is exactly that with in 1/16?. On mine the case split that I measured to is nearly level with the bottom of the frame. I didn?t measure up from the frame to the bell housing. Sorry. I will try again later. I have to put the car on ramps to get there.

Thanks, that's definitely helpful! If you're able to get more certain/precise measurements without a huge amount of trouble I won't complain, but that should let me locate the drive outputs well enough to be good. It will be interesting no matter what since unlike the DMC's transaxle which is evenly set on the center axis of the frame the drive shaft outputs for the electric drive unit has the output connections offset to one side with different-length axles.

Maybe these pics will help. I've got my car up on the lift so if you can be more specific about exactly what measurements you need let me know. Also, I just installed new motor mounts, so these measurements should be without 45 years of settling.
