Hi lads I'm having trouble with inoperable cooling fans. I checked if there was power detected at the otterstat and cooling fan sockets with a phase tester and i get erratic readings ranging from nothing, then a very weak intermittent on/off then a solid power reading then back to no reading for a while then a solid reading then back to a very weak reading etc. etc. from each socket.

Cooling fans get power from the fan relay which then drives the fan fail socket to power each fan. So get a voltmeter and test if your fan relay is failing or the problem is after that.
What Dave said...
When was the last time the fans ran? have you tried running power directly to them to check if they are functional?
Failing that you need to get yourself a multimeter and start checking voltages, somewhere along the line you've got a problem, grounds can corrode so make sure your fans have a good ground back to the battery

If you still have the blue fan fail relay, remove it and either install the "bypass kit" or a better relay. If you already have the bypass kit and it is the one with the fuses built in, check the fuses. Inspect the wiring and the connectors in the socket for overheating and damage.

thanks chaps. it was a dodgy cooling fan relay. i had a peep at the wiring diagram and everything came to life when i popped a new one in.
