View Full Version : General Console switches don't align? Voila! Problem solved!

Many DeLorean's I have seen (including my own) have the same issue - the console switches are out of alignment due to warping where the switches are seated. Being the OCD person I am, this always bothered me. Beyond the aesthetic issue, my driver's side window switch was actually getting stuck in the up or down position due to bad alignment. I thought I would hunker down and tackle this issue by doing the following...

I created a photoshop template of the switch cut-outs (very precise to accommodate the switches) and used that to make a rigid metal plate with a CNC machine in mind. I made sure the plate would fit very snug in the switch area to firmly secure the switch cluster. I then covered the plate with vinyl wrap (washable/waterproof) that matched the car interior pretty darn exact - I know more about types of available vinyl than I ever wanted to know. The switches then snapped right into the plate, then I secured the connectors, and then seated everything as a unit. As you can see below (before and after), I could not have asked for better results.

Now, the downside is the cost of the project (or time, depending how you go about it)... Unless you cut out the plate by hand (it can be done, but you need time and the right tools), it is expensive. If people are interested in a plate, let me know. If we can get enough people together who want one, I will try and get a cost quote. I could maybe put together a little kit with the vinyl sheet (that way if there are any small adjustments to be made, the plate can be filed and then wrapped). Thoughts in general? Or perhaps a better way to fabricate?

Just wrap the bottom of the switches with a little electrical tape and they will fit snug and tight in their holes.

That looks awesome. I have that sticking driver window switch problem and the general mess of switches. I know I'd be interested in one.

What did you make the plate out of and how did you secure it to the switch area?

Looks great! Mine are slightly warped, but will get worse with age. Does this plate sit above or installed underneath?

Just wrap the bottom of the switches with a little electrical tape and they will fit snug and tight in their holes.

The problem is the alignment rather than them being snug - but good suggestion! The area tends to warp making the switches not align properly.

Two things seem to cause the problem:

1 -The holes get opened up due to the switches coming in and out (this is what Matt fixed);
2 - The console gets crushed (from crawling over it) which causes the switch connectors to hit the fiberglass body, forcing the switches up out of the holes. My favorite fix for this is a short (1 inch) piece of 2x4 lumber glued to the body just behind the switches to support the console in the OEM position. Take the ash tray out for access, you don't even need to remove the console.

Matt's fix actually does a bit of both as it's adding a slight thickness to the panel raising the switches a bit more from the body.

I know someone out there actually cut a recess in the fiberglass to fix this, but just supporting the console is much easier and presents less danger of cutting into the fuel lines. . . .

It sits above since the warpage throws the switches out of whack. With the vinyl wrap, you don't even notice that it is non-native. The only thing you see from the dummy switch angle (if you look close) is that the plate sits a tad off the original console surface if the area around the switches extrudes out - but you have to look hard and wouldn't know it was not intended to look that way. That is unless you are even more OCD than me ;)

Very good solution! Thanks Dave :) The problem I had was a slight variation on a collapse to the console
as you said... The switches actually sat in the holes fully seated (so jacking it up would not help in this case), but what I assume pressure on the console did over the years caused the "bridges" between the holes to go out of whack. Between the dummy and window switch, the bridge warped up, then was straight between the window and defroster, then sunk between the defroster and the other window switch, etc... I tried to put pressure on the bridges to straighten them but no success - plus I assume the issue would come back even if I got them straight. This seemed like a good solution in my case in which I did not have to alter anything original. It raises the switches slightly but only the width of a couple dimes. Maybe not enough if the switches are hitting the fiberglass but will keep aligned at the height of the most outward sitting switch (one reason I wanted the plate to fit so snug).

That looks awesome. I have that sticking driver window switch problem and the general mess of switches. I know I'd be interested in one.

What did you make the plate out of and how did you secure it to the switch area?

Plate is steel and it is secured simply with a very snug fit (the thin vinyl wrap helps cushion the fit) and what little the rest of the switch can grab onto in the original opening. It won't come loose in my case unless you take out a switch and pull up on the plate with a bit of force.

That looks really good, man! If it could be made reasonably affordable I'd buy one. As it is I may have to duplicate your efforts with some of the scrap steel I have laying around.

A source on that vinyl might be nice for the rest of us if you don't end up producing these.

I am happy to share the template file if anyone would like it - just PM me. You would have to cut it out by hand which is tricky to get it precise. I am also happy to send out a piece of black vinyl wrap (sorry, no gray - but might be available and will check) you can use to cover it as long as the shipping cost is covered. Otherwise you have to buy a whole roll. I think it would be great to be able to make a small run of the plates though but need more interest :(

Also, just to reiterate so people don't have to read the whole thread (though some very good alternate solutions were presented) - the problem I had was not that the holes were too big or that the switches would not fully seat due to the console collapsing too low to the fiberglass, but rather the bridges between each cut-out had warped in and out causing the switches to never sit correctly. I tried to bend those back flush but did not have much success with it, and didn't want that issue to creep back in a year. This solves all 3 issues though (switches perfectly flush and locked) without having to modify anything stock or open up the console. Was just easiest for my particular situation.

Wierd...mine were so tight I was afraid of breaking something when I was taking them out. I thought it might be because of warping but they all seemed to be scrubbing all the way around basically... maybe my console has shrunk.

OH, Great Job!!!

I had a simmilar problem... I didn't even install blocking. I just removed the ash tray and pulled up on the console cover.

That seemed to do the trick.

I have to agree that the switches on mine tilting also drove me nuts. I fixed it by removing the console and hot gluing them in. By the way, with the console plate out I found the dummy switch hit on the ends. It is easy to see when it's out and you can look sideways at the fit. So to fix your poorly fitting dummy switches you need to "shave" a little of the plastic cap off where it hits the bends in the metal plate.

Just sent you an email Rob. I'm pretty sure most everyone would benefit from the plate. It also makes it very easy to access the switch connections since it comes out as a unit, verses the PITA it is to muscle and dig out each switch. Good stuff! Let's get this puppy rolling!

The thing (IMO having tested and seen the plate "raw" installed) about that is you really only see the plate between switches at certain angles and an akward slice on either side of the dummy switches. Leaving it stainless (to my eyes) just makes it look unfinished and out of place. Kinda like "What's wrong with that guy's switche area? Is that a repair?". You just wouldn't see enough for the eye to look at it right. That being said, I'm sure it would be easy (once there is another run of them) to get a "plain" one if it is what you want, what do I know! Haha... :)

I too would want one of these plates. I have already destroyed one window switch trying to get it to fit in right. That was an expensive mistake. I tried "shaving" the new switch, and I also tried Dave's suggestion about using the 1" 2x4. Good idea, but still didn't give me enough room. But that along with this new plate (which should raise the switches up further) should solve my problem, I hope.

I finally ventured out to my garage (10 degrees and lots of snow between my house and the garage) and took the switchplate out of the green machine and gave it a look/see. I'm thinking of making two small dimensional changes to possibly ease the R&R of the plate but otherwise the thing works quite well. Next it's off to the metal shop for a quote. Hopefully I'll get things rolling fairly quickly on this. I'll PM you with more info.
Frankly Matt I'd rather be on the left coast right now! Brrrrrr!

It won't fully solve the clearance issue but it will force the switch to stay in place. The new window switches are simply bigger than the NOS ones. What were they thinking? You will still have to pull up the mounting area a bit but it's doable. You have to be aggressive with your pulling up on the opening areas to actually get more clearance.

Hi Thomas,
Funny you should ask as I'm staring at some mild steel prototypes with some dimensional changes to help with the fitment of the taller DMCH switches to make them fit better and hopefully be easier to R&R once installed. I just got them the night before last. I need to test fit them and see how they respond to the stock switch as well. My intention is for them to improve the fit of any switch available but two styles may be required to achieve that goal. We are much closer to a final design than we were a week ago so the answer is yes there is movement. Please stay tuned for an update ASAP.

I just had several new prototypes made with various altered demensions and have hit on the perfect fitting combination. I will be making these shortly and will let you know when the "Mattoline" switchplates are available. There's your extra T matt ;)

Additionally I had a brainstorm for an altered optional version that will solve another longstanding issue with the switchs if my hunch is correct. More to follow as soon as my lazercutter gets back from vacation.

He also has a cool 2nd version of these with a "lip" on them that protect your arm from engaging the switches. It's almost here folks the mighty "Mattaligner" Console Switch Retainer & Protector!

Here is a picture of the first prototype combination switch switchplate that does both functions. It is designed to;

1) Perfectly align the switchs so they don't bind on the console and look more like the factory intended.

2) Provide more depth clearance for the new DMCH reproduction switch while making removal far easier.

3) Provide a padded small armrest to keep your arms from inadvertaintly engaging the switchs which has always been a complaint from owners.

4) Improve on the old D1 switch cover plate which keeps the switch from accidently engaging but must be removed for switch operation.

The second picture shows the cover plate which is now unnecessary with the new design. I am considering offering it as both a retainer plate only for those who prefer a stock appearance and a cost savings and the combination retainer/protector for those that want all the benefits of the new design.
I think the combo plate is the way to go but I would like feedback from you. Anybody?...PM's are welcome too. I love this new design and think you will too.
There is a lot more info on my Facebook page so before you post questions here you could check there first.

Wow, that's... not even close to what Matt and I originally put together. Neat idea to have the switches protected from accidental activation as well, but does it hit your forearm when resting it on the console?

You can feel it but it feels quite comfortable as it's rubber padded. I think it will be fine but need more seat time. Perhaps another year or two of testing :)

I lost ten days because of a PO mixup with my manufactorer so unfortunatly it will probably be about 3 to 4 more weeks as long as I beat they "closing for vacation" deadline. I'm crossing my fingers. Getting this project to completion has been like pulling teeth but it will be worth the wait I promise.

Not happy with the pics ive seen and the long delay to even get one we have made our own switch alignment plate.

We are really happy with the result. It is cad designed and fully cnc'ed.Im just going to paint black as you will hardly see it.

We have mounted 4 rivnuts to the console plate that it will mount to.

You mean you reproduced the first design in the thread, which is great, it works well. It kinda annoys me when someone spends so much time coming up with a new idea, develops it, and instead of contacting the first designer or helping to get it out, hijacks the thread with a copy. Rob (as far as I know) will offer the alignment plate without the switch guard as well like the first design. Last I heard from Rob, these were ready to roll! I think!

Umm... How is this not the original design exactly in the first thread post? Minus the mounting screws of course. I just think it's in bad taste to copy and post as your own. But that's just my opinion. In respect of people's designs or unique ideas, I always reach out to try and help first, in spirit of the community. And perhaps not post in the same thread...

Well first of all the original design is a cut and filed plate with 5 holes that can be made in any garage. Im not trying to pass my design off as the original design but use the original design as a starting points for something better and if you actually look closely at my design a lot of thought and engineering has gone into it. The whole idea of this post is to show the different options that achieve the same thing. Also I haven't done this to sell just like the other number of things on my car that I will show the forum. You have totally missed the point of my post.

I do better understand... I didn't mean to lash out, I just see it a bit differently in terms of supporting members and products - I just thought you could have dialed down the "I didn't like the design and tired of waiting" thing - when it's the same design to be honest. I also did do a CNC production run of the "garage" prototype (no offense taken - it's called a prototype stemming from an original idea...) with improvements partnered with another forum member that tackled the same issues and design of the one you posted. We did a run of about 25 - went like hot-cakes and gave them away. It's just a plate in the end - engineering is a strong word. But I think Grady has done a remarkable job perfecting the plate with and without the guard. Perhaps we can share our ideas on this and how you approached the plate yourself as far as actual design differences that can improve it. I would love to know the thought and engineering that improved the plate.

I've been in Colorado at the Lotus LOG event the last few days which was terrific BTW but the organization was not on a par with Ken's Delorean Car Shows.
We miss you already Ken please unretire yourself ASAP! This is my first chance in a while to give everyone an update.

As for the original switchplate being "cut and filed" you are mistaken as all prototypes have been lazercut on state of the art equipment. The switchplates are DONE except for final graining and the "Mattaligner" logos which you have demonstrated handily will be needed to differentiate my product from the inevitable copies and knockoffs. I've invested far more time in this project then you can imagine and the delays were from testing and drawing updates as well as the manufacturer's scheduling conflicts.

I find it disingenius at best that you dislike the design and can't put up with the delays as no one thought to offer this before in 34 years. I properly credited Matt for coming up with the original idea which he let me roll with and I've spent many hours modifying demensions, adding the armrest function, and testing the product in the real world environment. Thank you for being the first one to steal the concept as now Matt and myself won't have to worry about the possibility anymore. It's kind of funny that it happened even before my official unvieling of "The Mattaligner" but this is how the wolrd rolls these days.

For those who can wait the first units should be ready to go in about a week as even the etching is a miniproject in itself. As soon as the first pieces are etched I will have them up on our website with all pertinent information available. I believe your patience will be rewarded with a thoughtfully designed product using the finest materials and quality control possible.

The amount of time you spent making your "one off" would have been far more productive spent working on your car but that is your choice. While the design is more intricate (unneccessarily so IMHO) it is essentially Matt's design. You negated to add a switch protector which you will regret as the plate will make the switches even more prone to accidental engagement than the stock mounting. For that reason I've decided to offer the switchplates with the switch protector only at this time. I may reconsider this if there is mass resistence to the protector but I don't see why there would be as it's so much better than the switchplate alone. The cost savings isn't worth the drawback of not having the protector portion of the plate. I'm a bit confused as you said you don't like the plates you've seen and that you haven't seen my design but since they're (Matt's and my modified design) are the only one's out there then what have you seen and disliked?

I don't understand the malice in this thread. It has been over 7 months since PJ Grady suggested they might make these plates and they aren't shipping yet. Bigmac wanted one now, so they machined one. It's a one-off and they're not selling them. Why get upset? Just because somebody else had the idea first?
Even if the plates were shipping right now, bigmac doesn't have to buy one. Would you get mad if instead of buying a plate, he made his own? Just seems so hostile in here.

There isn't any malice intended on my part. I just observed that he went through a lot of trouble with making an intricate stepped plate that I think was rather time consuming and unneeded. He made sure to point out he didn't like the switchplates he saw but claimed to have not seen mine so couldn't possibly have copied it. So I asked whose plate he had seen? My question was not answered and now you're stepping in to defend him when no defense is really needed. People can make anything they want even if it means borrowing from others ideas. I think Matt was a bit upset that he had to post it on this thread as it had been about Matt's and my switchplate and he diverted the attention to his own but it's a free country last time I checked. Please don't overreact to a simple question as to why he doesn't like the "other" switchplates as I don't mind constructive criticism.

It's just all so rudely-worded. Why not just ask what he disliked about the original version instead of passive-aggressively implying his plate is a knockoff and saying he stole it?

Well frankly he did "borrow" the idea from us to be perfectly honest in the most PC terms I can say. What would you call it...sheer coincidence? I don't have to apologise for my wording any more than he would apologize for copying the idea. Like I said it's a free country and I'm over it but I don't have to be happy about it do I? I don't see a problem that he liked the concepts so he made his own to his liking then decided to share it with everyone. No need for any negativity which as pointed out was clearly coming across. If someone has the means and know how to make their own solution by all means why not. I don't think a new thread really needs to be created since it was posted in general discussion, and a solution to the same problem. More power to anyone else following the thread that may make their own solution as well and wants to decide which they prefer.. On an orphaned car like ours coming up with our own solutions be it by something a vendor sells or on our own is kind of the name of the game.

That being said the thought crossed my mind to make some kind of solution to this problem that drove me nuts but I don't have the means or know how to do so. So i'm looking forward to anyone selling a solution as soon as possible. Thanks for all the time and development you put in Rob. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Just to briefly explain why this pressed the wrong buttons... I just wouldn't go on someone's thread who I knew was working very hard on developing a new idea and say "I don't like what I see so here is a copy". There are a number of threads followed here where awesome members are working hard on projects and the posts are supportive or offer solutions for us as a collective community bring a project to light. The original post by BigMac had a very obvious undertone, and was not accurate as he claims he never saw Rob's design. It's just a plate... But I always respect people's ideas and try to help contribute, not say I don't like it and here is my 99% similar product, for sale or not. Why don't I go on some of the brilliant Dave threads and tell him I'm tired of waiting so I just copied it. Really? Would you do that? It just rubs me the wrong way. I have never once been negative on this forum, but IMO, personally, this lacked tact. I'm sure BigMac is a very enthusiastic owner and a nice guy, but why come on the thread and neg out?

Yes they will be around $60-. My cost doubled with the welded on armrest plate, cushion, and extra time needed to buff out the weld and clamping marks from the production process. I have decided to offer it only with the armrest because without it the the tendency to accidentally hit the window switches would be aggravated by the extra thickness of the plate. I am hoping for a 100% satisfaction rate and eliminating the armrest while cheaper would lead to inevitable complaints with the design. The etching has also proved problematic as every step of what should be a simple process has been excrutiatingly slow. I am as frustrated as anyone with the delays especially since I'm sitting on 100 units that are paid for and 95% done. Just a little bit longer I hope. "Patience is a virtue" is what I'm learning firsthand!

Any update on these?

I have twenty pieces in stainless finish ready to go and can start taking orders by email or phone until I get them properly on the site. I need to take final pictures and make up the text for the site but can start shipping TM if anyone is antsy for one. I will be dropping some off for black oxiding as soon as I get the rest of them grained. These "Mattaligners" are a timesuck as I have to regrain each one by hand after lazer cutting and welding but they sure do look good when done. Pics to follow in a day or two.

I sent out a few gray pad only Mattaligners while I finalized a switch to a similiar larger black pad profile. I'm ordering those today and will send you one soon. From now on all units will have both pads which just slip into place. The black pad sits a little lower so I have to adjust the script a little. The text is barely visible when installated and yes it will be on the black ones too but in reverse. They are at the lazer etcher. I am very happy with the way these turned out and want to make sure that people know whether the part they are buying came from us or is a cheaper knockoff. This logo will help to insure you are getting what you paid for without being an eyesore once installed as it's nearly invisible. If someone doesn't want it that's fine as I'm sure there will be "adopters" of this design that won't have any markings. This is a much more complicated piece then a quick glance might indicate.
I'm merely protecting my brand and giving my friend Matt Kajcienski a little credit for coming up with the idea. It's just a little reward for him since I'm too cheap to pay royalties!!! Actually if I did the end user would also pay them at the end of the day. His dad created some original flat prototypes and Matt gave me one to try. I immediatly sensed the promise it held but it needed some tolerence tweaks to accommodate different switches. He let me run with it and add my own changes to take the design further. Then I had the brainstorm of the "armrest" which at least doubled the complexity and lead time but was well worth it in the end. I should have them set up on my site's shopping cart sometime this week with pics and details. Every car could have used one of these from the factory as Barrie Wills recently told me on Facebook. That's the ultimate compliment for me. Thank you Matt and you too Barrie! May our switch's stay aligned forevermore.

Check and see if your switch has all of the pins, but I assume they would be. I saw the "optionally illuminated" switches being sold and figured they were roughly the same after noticing there is a light inside of mine when you take the switch top off. Our connectors don't have a pin for the illumination circuit so you have to jump the pin next to it so they light up. The delorean club uk ones come with a nifty little jumper thing, but I just took a piece of wire and made a U and jammed it in there. Attached is that picture so you can see the pins to jump.

I have the Renault R9 switches, not the ones delorean vendors sell with illumination and the included jumper plate so I had to make my own jumper using a wire. I assume those cars come with the appropriate pins so they light up by default and what the vendors sell is an adapted version of the Renault switch with a delorean sized cap?

The current vendor switch is not Renault.

It is a universal window switch that has been updated with the DMC style cap. This is why slight modification to the connector interface is required. It works very well.

I've seen the normal configuration of that switch offered with several universal power window kits.

It is a replacement switch made for Renaults, not made by Renault. I prefer the large style caps the DMCH units have.

For now it was something very affordable I thought looked better than my original switches with worn off symbols and was stoked to find out it had illumination and a nice solid click. I may end up breaking down and buying the larger cap ones eventually just so everything matches. Makes sense they are used in universal kits and such, I just purchased them advertised for a Renault R9 but they are obviously new. Either way the thread is about the switch alignment and seems what ever switch you may have this solution works great :)

That was my intention when setting final dimensions. The only exception I'm aware of is the DMCH defrost switch as it is wider by about .030" than the original switch. I was not willing to sacrifice the correct fit of an original switch to accommodate a production mistake so if you have one of those you simply need to shave off the excess material on a bench grinder. I shaved one down to confirm it is easily done. I tried to think of every possible concern with this product so it took a bit longer for the project to germinate than I expected. Both "Mattaligner" versions will be available in a few days or less.

Mine has a bulb but the white outline paint is so dense no light comes through. I tried to remove the white paint but had no luck.

We have everything in place for both Mattaligners as of this week but have been blindsided by last minute BTTF requests and commitments until next Thursday. When the dust settles I will get the pics and info into our website cart which will make ordering fast and simple. This BTTF frenzy has gone ballistic in NYC and I've been sucked into the time space continuum!

Makes me sad to see you drawn into this in general:

The car makes the movie.... The movie doesn't make the car. I refuse to be drawn into the time suck associated with this nonsense. Especially by those who actually think they will be able to get their hands on a DeLorean for a 'theater showing" two weeks before. Any emails marked as spam relating to this, calls fielded and politely told to call John Hervey's nation wide DeLorean rental service and all gawking/flocking fans arriving to either of our locations are quickly indoctrinated with the "pure DeLorean" experience. Which quickly separates the boys from the men with a comprehensive run through of our services designed to weed out those who want to buy a DeLorean to rent out and make money with having no care about the car. While I put my best foot forward to insult those asking movie questions with my inherent "lack of knowledge" regarding the movies in general. I must be the only pure one left. All other vendors have committed themselves in some capacity to this nonsense.

Let me be abundantly clear: I help many owners with time machines regularly. Only after they audition via opening dialog regarding car issues etc and I get a pulse for if they should be assisted or not. I use a strict gauging scale based on motivational ranking vs. over all attitude for core mechanical care of the car. IE owners like Terry and Oliver, Michael Bilinski, Ken K etc who have a just cause I will drop what I'm doing for because they are good people. A guy that wants a DeLorean in good shape for 10k so a hack job can mutilate the car in Texas for three times the purchase price receives the exact opposite.

Best part is while I hard line on many DeLorean related things that I'm sure offend many in a niche' market I'm forced to discreetly move between locations. As once my whereabouts are known I'm hunted down and flooded with cars where ever I go. My ethos on this business and community must be right to a certain degree. A clear separation between these things must be taken. Our time as vendors should not be wasted with the use of this car in popular culture. We have a job to do and this nonsense prevents us from doing so.

"The path of the righteous DeLorean Vendor is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil enthusiasts. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity, good will and occasional monetary gain, shepherds those in need through the highs and lows of DeLorean ownership. For he is truly his marks keeper and the finder of those truly living the dream. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my beloved car with this movie bull shit."

So what is your point here? Are you trying to say that the other vendors like Rob Grady and DeLorean Motor Company and their affiliates are not good representatives of the marque because they decided to have a little bit of fun by embracing a part of the car's legacy?

Something trivial is in the way of something getting completed. We should all be fully devoted seven days a week and only stop when the work runs out or hospitalization occurs. For what all of us charge I view it as unacceptable for any of us to be hindered from working consistently non stop. Taking weekends off on average amounts to 104 days a year minimum where customers are not being accommodated. Not as big of a deal when you are offering a generic service with a franchise but for the few indies left with a niche' within a niche' the time is now as others unravel. We shouldn't feel obligated and forced to feed the enthusiasts misguided belief in the movie making the car as it is not what sustains this car marque. Advertising the car in such a manner is not required throughout the media and only further feeds the false hoods. Just as DMCH has successfully maliciously false branded themselves for years through media exploitation.

I didn't say it was all BTTF related but rather inspired by it. On Thursday I spent a few hours with a N.Y. Daily News reporter who did a piece on our shop and about the Delorean marque. His slant is to be about the value of the Delorean on it's own merits rather than as a BTTF car. I can only hope that is how it will pan out but at least I made the effort to try and promote the brand.

On Saturday I drove out to Riverhead, after rehanging the doors on a roof replacement job, to have a Delorean available for a photoshoot at a wedding. Admittedly the groom is a BTTF fan but the Delorean was stock and drew a huge crowd of admiring onlookers and that's alway a good thing.

Today I went to Queens for a professional photoshoot for an edition of man'slife.com magazine which will include a video of a stock Delorean. They came back to the shop and at this moment are wrapping up a photoshoot here. It's 11PM on Sunday and I'm tired but it was a good day and a great week.

All these requests were inspired by the BTTF anniversary but I don't see any harm being done. These events all help promote the Delorean as a great collectable car and it seems that notion is finally taking hold after all these years and I'm proud to be a small part of it.

The only strictly BTTF event involved in my week is one I am not attending. A production company asked me about a BTTF car for a TV show to be filmed in the NYC area and I called onthe Holler's and the Shea's to see if either were available on short notice. The Hollers were already booked but the Sheas' were available and they pursued the referrel. It turns out that it is to be for "The Jimmy Kimmel Show" to be taped on Wednesday October 21st. Isn't it funny that they picked that date!

I agree that there are some things that shouldn't get in the way of doing business. After being in several car circles, I will definitely say that the vendors in the DeLorean community are practically at the "beck and call" of the owners, compared to other circles. The personalized service and assistance that we as owners get is usually pretty incredible, and often goes unrecognized.

That being said, this is certainly the one time when I would understand the movie hype being a big deal and embracing it. Heck, it's making all of our cars go up in value. Everyone that's ever seen Back to the Future in the last 25 years has been waiting for these moments; when the future finally becomes the past. This is especially true for the DeLorean owners; especially those who were partially or largely inspired to own a DeLorean because of Back to the Future. Personally, I wish I wasn't spending October 21st, 2015 8,000 miles away from my car; but thats life. After this week, we can all go back to normal business. Until then, I say embrace it! Josh, I know you're trying to set a new standard for being a DeLorean vendor, and everyone respects it, but you have to at least embrace Back to the Future this week some! Before "DPI" wasn't your original business's name "McFly Motorsports?" Enjoy the week! I'm sure you'll probably get a lot of additional interest as a result. I know Ken K always said that hits to the DCS website always skyrocketed every time there was a BTTF Special event, DeLorean story, or Press Release from DMCH.

I understand that it shouldn't be viewed as "absolute" and a balance could be achieved. My all or nothing approach has equaled my success at this. I just can't understand how people really think I'm unreasonable when asked to drop everything I'm doing for something related to the movie. Obviously this has spilled over ten fold in the months and weeks leading up to this. Even today I have had absurd calls that even after politely saying no I"m in the wrong for ruining someones planned party. Not my problem....

While I would love to give the old MMS as a valid bttf embracing blow for you it was off the cuff back in the day. I had a benefactor giving me blank checks for anything Delorean related I wanted, parents asking what I was doing in life and need a tax exempt certificate. Seemed to reflect the irony of it all at the time. When this quickly became something by accident above the word of mouth level that it was I had to make a branding change.

My BTTF reference was meant only to explain why I had to delay shipping Mattaligners for a little while. I had no idea you had such strong feelings about BTTF as it pertains to the Delorean. I would greatly appreciate your starting a new thread if you would like to expand on this subject any further. It would help me out if we could keep this thread on the original topic.

It would probably be different if people were reasonable about it.

I think this right here is the thing. It's the difference between the people who visit the McFly house in Los Angeles and keep a respectful distance, versus the assholes that go traipsing through the yard and get pictures taken at the front door. People are assholes, and those are the ones that make the most noise.

As for the car perspective, I love the BTTF movies. It's why I own the car. But as much as I love the movies, I have every intention of keeping my DeLorean fully original. People often ask me if I'm going to ever do a Time Machine conversion, and my answer is always the same: Absolutely not. The DeLorean is already a rare and beautiful car on its own. There's zero reason for me to rarefy it by destroying it to accommodate a Time Machine conversion. (And remember, this is coming from someone who absolutely adores the movies.) If a vendor feels the same way and that's the way they choose to run their business, I can very easily respect that.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't convert their DeLoreans into Time Machines (though it breaks my heart a little every time a new one happens), and I'm not saying people who own Time Machine conversions are assholes. I'm saying that there should be equal amounts of respect for the people who keep their cars original, and the vendors who choose to cater to that side of the market.

Side Note: I also have a huge amount of disdain for "prop shops" that have turned the art of prop building into a borderline mass-production assembly line business with no soul behind the work and try to market the business (and the lifestyle) beyond what it actually is. If you spend the time and effort to build a prop car on your own, that's an achievement. When you pay a company obscene amounts of money to stamp you a duplicate of something they've made a hundred times before, who gives a shit?

Alright guys, the Mattaligner has arrived! I've installed it and couldn't be happier!! I ordered the black one. It came with both grey and black bumpers, a drill bit and (2) mounting screws. I have included pics of both installed, but prefer the black. For all those wondering, you can't even see the text printed on it when installed. With the black bumper this piece looks very stock.

This product was definitely worth the wait!

I purchased the lighted switches from DMC, but have not installed them yet (although I need to, my switches are flakey).

One of the issues I've heard with the lighted switches is that they are slightly taller than the OEM ones, and if you have any console deflection, they won't stay seated, or they bottom out.

Anyone know if this extra bit of metal spacing corrects that?

TIA,

Doogie

It help as it does lift the switches slightly. BUT

Another thing that will help is to support the console from underneath. When "new" they fit OK, but after 30 years of elbows leaning on the console, and people climbing over the console to unjam the opposite door:mad1:, the console is lower than it should be. I've found that a 2x2x1" wood block placed between the console and the fiberglass, just forward of the ashtray will do wonders for the fit of the switches. Originals or replacements.

I purposely made the bottom portion thicker than needed for the stock switch's to completely eliminate this problem with the DMCH switch's. It locks all of the switch's in place but also keeps you from accidentally engaging them with your arm or elbow. I spent a lot of time, as many here know, perfecting the design, dimensions, and materials to work with all available switch's. One minor exception is that the current reproduction defroster switch is thicker than NOS so it has to be shaved down for a few seconds on a grinding stone to fit. I didn't want to compromise the fit of the originals to allow for a design flaw on a seldom seen reproduction part. Of course you could just stuff a block of wood under your console as another suggests but you won't be getting the same benefits.
Rob

The mattaliner is a great idea.

For me I did the block of wood method. I like the fact that it creates a supported surface to lean on. My switches are perfectly straight across.

On side note: my defroster switch fell apart a couple years ago. I reassembled it per instructions that Rob G. handed out at a DCS tech session several years ago.
I inadvertently installed the outer switch housing 180 degrees opposite. When I installed the switch in the armrest I discovered the switched rocked forward to turn ON.
The silver lining is that the OFF position is straight across level and it's impossible to accidentally lean against the switch inadvertently turning it ON. Call it dumb luck, but I like it this way.

We recently replaced our computers and enlarged/changed servers and had teething problems which are just now hopefully behind us. I will get them up on our site but in the meantime you can call (800)350-7429 to order or supply all pertinent info to our "Contact us" portion of the website and state whether you want grained stainless or black stainless and we'll contact you for credit card or pay pal info. I figured that...

Ok...so I got my switches installed, and I see that the Mattaligner has little notches all facing the same direction for each side of the switch. When I put my switches in and try them the driver's side switch has the window going down when I hit the forward arrow...and the passenger side has the window going up when I hit the forward arrow. Does that seem right?

And naturally my mattaligner and switches will not even come close to fitting where they are supposed to be positioned. Get out the Dremel....:smokelot:

It means your window motor wires inside the door were installed in reverse. Easiest fix is to grind the plastic ridge off the side of the window switch so you can install it upside down. No one but you will ever know.

It means your window motor wires inside the door were installed in reverse. Easiest fix is to grind the plastic ridge off the side of the window switch so you can install it upside down. No one but you will ever know.
Exactly Patrick! Of course the best fix would be to make the offending installer/repairer fix the original mishap but good luck with that right?

You could also unplug the 2 wire connector at the window motor and reinstall it the correct way, it is not keyed as I recall. I'm talking about the aftermarket window motors. I don't know if it would apply to the original motors.

The original motors can be wired reversed as well. Two separate plugs, not keyed.

Wanted to pass along a big thank you to Rob Grady.

I was hoping to buy a MattAligner directly from him at DCS 2016, and avoid paying shipping. We heard Rob had difficulties getting to the show, and each day that went by I selfishly worried a little more about getting my part. But Rob persevered and made it to the show. So Sunday after closing ceremonies, I was able to buy a MattAligner.

Thanks for coming through Rob.

Did you have to remove the entire console to install the Mattaligner, or can it be done from the top? Video only shows after installation.

Thanks.

No need to respond...I just installed the MattAligner and I did not have to remove the console.

The Mattaligner aligns the switches, but the screw keeps the Mattaligner aligned.

I guess you could call those screws Mattaligner aligners.

Hey! I've just coined a new term!

I see you answered your own question. it was super easy to install. had a little difficulty getting it to go all the way down but thats cuz my center console is a little warped. but i got it in.

I recommend using the supplied screws and drill bit to lock it into position although it is not necessary for anyone who would object to two tiny holes which are invisible with the switches installed? I will post the simple install procedure here ASAP.

I just installed my Mattaligner and new LED window switches and everything fits perfectly! Thanks for yet another great product Rob!

BTW, drilling the holes and installing the screws is no big deal. Even if you dislike having perfectly straight switches and remove your Mattaligner for some reason (why would you ever want to do that?), you can't see them with the switches in place.

Those switches don't look fully seated. The lip of the Mattaligner should be higher than the switches.

They are. It's a bit of an optical illusion due to the angle of the photo.
