when you replace the dash pad on the D, how does the vin tag come off ? is it riveted on or is it glued on?

The vin tag is held in by two rivets. Are you installing a used dash of a reproduction unit?

Most are riveted, but some are glued. Those are certain re-vin'd '82 cars.

im not installing anything yet. i just noticed my dash is starting to crack by the glove compartment. was just a general question i had for when the time comes. if i could find a good used non cracked one, that would be great, if not i will go with reproduction.

The opinions on the new ones are some what mixed. I just replaced a reproduction one for the second time as a good will gesture due to bowing issues up by the defrost vents. If you go aftermarket always use a windshield sun shade and avoid parking in the sun. Also we have started to dynomat the open spaces between the molding ribs to better sound proof the unit. The factory design acted as a sound absorber IMO. I stocked a good number of the reproductions in the last few months and sound proofed all of them.

Unbelievable. Do you have any pics you can post of the heat distorted dash's you removed?

Have you considered crack filler?

I used it on my binnacle and dash with some pretty decent results and it only put me out $50 for a can of dye and the crack filler.

It's smoother where I sanded it (since it lost some texturing) but you'd have to look pretty closely to see where the old cracks were.
