View Full Version : Heat & A/C AC in the DeLorean EV?

While watching the nightline piece about the DeLorean EV I noticed the lack of an AC condenser behind the rock screen in the track scene.

Does the prototype not have air conditioning? It must get pretty hot in their tooling around the Houston Motorsports Park even in the early morning.

Is the claimed 70-100 mile range of the EV on a full charge calculated taking into account the electric draw of a working AC unit or calculated from the prototypes current operational set up?

I drove my D in Florida without the air working for a year and a half.
Then I put my D in DMC Florida and had it repaired. Three months later my baby was delivered filthy . Then I went another year and half without air.

It gets hot.

I can imagine that'll be a tough one to work out considering all of the A/C controls are vacuum controlled. Either all the vacuum solenoids under the dash will have to become linear actuators or an electric vacuum pump will have to be installed somewhere on the car.

They've already done the electric actuator thing on some of the RHD cars.

You could always ask DMCH...

I'm still awaiting my vehicle's final delivery so I haven't had a chance verify it myself, but as far as I'm aware the unit in my RHD-converted vehicle is all-electric. It's made by Vintage Air (http://www.vintageair.com/).

Worst-case, assuming it has AC, running the AC should only result in a 5 to 10-mile range decrease. (you think an AC system uses a lot of juice, the motor's rated at 215 kilowatts!)

Lights should be barely noticeable, especially if most lights have been replaced with LEDs as they do for their new-build cars.

I typically do not get answers from DMCH.

My main question here was the 70-100 mile range of the electric car calculated accounting for the electric draw of a working AC or with the current prototypes set up without a working AC? Also will the EV be offered with AC at all? If so how does the additional electric draw effect the driving range of the EV on a full charge?

I have a Lexus RX 400 Hybrid. When the car is in "Electric" mode the A/C works fine. I'm assuming that an all electric vehicle would do the same. The compressor, and everything else works electrically.

Wouldn't the draw effect the range? While your Lexus has A/C that works fine while in Electric mode it certainly wouldn't be required like it is in a DeLorean. The A/C coming on has a noticeable draw on a stock DeLorean.

I just wonder why the DMC EV prototype has the A/C omitted. If there is no issue with lack of vaccum since there is an electric system already in place for RHD conversions. Is some element of the EV taking up the space the AC Condenser normally occupys? If that is the case what is the solution to keep a working AC in the EV? Is there a solution?
