Sad someone died in the crash. Also hate to see that a DeLorean was severly damaged.

Sorry to hear about the death of the other driver. I am sure the DeLorean can be fixed. Cannot say that for the other car after seeing the footage.

DMCH can probably take the vin plates and rebuild it into a new car.

The DeLorean driver didn't seem too concerned about his car. He's a bigger man than I am. It's neat that the engine still runs, although I can't imagine his radiator is still functioning... Heck, maybe it is since the damage was so high.

Ironic that ABC pushed the DeLorean piece and now NBC picks up on one. :read:

Not sure. But he sounds like he did what he could to avoid it:

DeLorean owner Joel McClure said he was driving down the highway when he saw the wreckage in the middle of the road.

He swerved and tried to correct and rear-ended another car in front of him.

His car sustained significant damage but the engine still runs.

“Classic car. Stainless steel,” McClure said. “She’ll survive."

Think it may have been this guys (only one near La Jolla):

The tag looks similar, as do the taillights (fade) and rims.

Different tailpipes. The one in the crash seems to have a diagonal cut to the tips, the one you found has pea shooters, but maybe he switched them.

I doubt that's the same car. The license plate number is different, as well as the chrome tips on the muffler of the crashed car.

EDIT: Damn! You beat me to it by 1 minute on the muffler tips

I feel sorry for the family of the truck driver. Considering the damage done to the D, it held up better than the truck! Then again the D didn't roll down a hill.

I didn't read it that the D hit the truck. The driver said that he hit a stopped car, which possibly was the one to hit the truck (or that the truck hit)

Did it say how fast he was going? I love my D, but I feel it's kind of a death trap. Especially after seeing the crash tests on YouTube. That drivers thankfully seems fine.

Insurance companies can sometimes be quick to total a crashed car, but I wonder if this one's fixable.

Dracula

I'd say that the car is fixable. The lower half looks almost untouched. A new fascia, hood, and both fenders on top of a few repairs to the underbody and the car should look as good as new.

Here is a story that I found on www.replacementtoyotacorollaparts.com (odd location, but story does involve a Corolla):

LA JOLLA, Calif. — A 27-year-old ex-Navy man from Los Angeles County was killed early Friday when his pickup truck crashed off a freeway ramp and landed on Interstate 5 in La Jolla, where it was struck by several other vehicles.

Regino Miranda III of Whittier lost control of his 2005 Chevrolet Silverado for unknown reasons while traveling on the connector from eastbound State Route 52 to southbound I-5 about 1:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol and county Medical Examiner’s Office.

The truck overturned, rolled several times, went down a steep ice plant- covered bank and landed on its wheels on the southbound side of the interstate. Miranda died at the scene.

Moments later, a 23-year-old man driving a 2006 Toyota Corolla came upon the accident scene and was unable to react in time to keep his car from smashing into the crumpled pickup, CHP public-affairs Officer Marc Hale said.

The motorist then pulled over to the right-hand shoulder of the freeway, after which a man in a 2006 Ford truck stopped behind the Corolla to offer assistance.

A short time later, a southbound 1982 DeLorean struck Miranda’s Silverado, according to Hale. The 21-year-old driver of the sports car also pulled off onto the southern shoulder of the interstate, where his vehicle crashed into the good Samaritan’s pickup.

“[I] See a black wreckage mass in the middle of the road, correct myself and swerved right into the side bar of the road, and rear-ended a Ford in front of me,” said Joel Mcclure, whose DeLorean was heavily damaged.

None of the men involved in the secondary crashes suffered any injuries.

The accident forced the closure of the southbound side of I-5 in the area along with the SR-52 connectors. The lanes were closed for more than four hours while crews cleared the debris. All the lanes were open again by 5:45 a.m., Hale said.

Intoxication did not appear to be a factor in any of the crashes, according to CHP officials. Miranda reportedly had been staying with friends in San Diego following his recent release from the military.

He said he was traveling at about 60mph, but who knows how fast he was still traveling at the time of impact.

I wouldn't worry about the DeLorean as far as safety is concerned. I've always felt safe in mine, and what you've never seen is the actual data from those test crashes that was recorded. George Washington University has the originals along with the binders on telemetry data gathered from inside of the passenger compartment. According to a clerk I once spoke with there while researching the crashes, she said the car was quite impressive compared to most others as results had shown even during that 40mph crash the occupants would only have received minor internal bruising. When you see that front end get torn up, it's sacrificing itself to slow the passengers down as slowly as possible. It just looks worse since rather than folding like sheet metal, the fiberglass shatters. Same process, same results, one just looks worse.

This car is quite repairable.

Stopping to help someone out is fine and all. But you should never endanger yourself in the process. I wouldn't be surprised to see if this guy in the Ford doesn't get dinged for damage to the DeLorean. Good Samaritan laws only apply to the people you're trying to help, not others whom you harm while performing your *duties*. Worse yet, what if his truck didn't simply cause another vehicle to crash into it, but he blocked access for first responders to get to the victims, and they lost their lives in the process because they couldn't get help in time?

These are some good lessons to remember:

If you can't safely help someone without endangering your own life, then don't. Minimize casualties by keeping yourself from being one.
Always park your vehicle out of rage of direct traffic.
Carry Flares or Reflectors to throw out in front of the disabled vehicle in order to warn oncoming drivers. If nothing else, wave a flashlight from the safety of the side of the road.

Is there any way to confirm this? Are these data public?

What am I missing here?
IMO, the guy in the Ford is the last one who should be "dinged for damage", and, the only one that does not deserve a citation, etc.! (Other than possibly the Silverado driver since his situation was "unknown".) According to the article posted, the Corolla driver couldn't stop and hit the Silverado. However a local law is worded, one is supposed to "be able to stop in the assured clear distance ahead". He didn't. (?distracted or speeding?...).Afterwords, he "pulled over to the right-hand shoulder" and a "man in a 2006 Ford truck stopped behind the Corolla [off the road] to offer assistance." (In some states he is required to do just that, if it is safe etc.) He did nothing wrong! It continues (with odd wording) saying, "The 21-year-old driver of the sports car also pulled off onto the southern shoulder of the interstate, where his vehicle crashed into the good Samaritan’s pickup." I don't know how one "pulls off onto" the shoulder and "crashes", but he too could/did not stop (probably for the same reason(s)?)
I'd say it would be ridiculous to go after the Ford driver, probably unreasonable for the Corolla Driver, and probably what happens to the D driver (by an insurance company at least).
