I took a quick look at http://www.archive.org/ which offers the Wayback Machine, an archive of websites as they existed in the past. I plugged in www.dmctalk.com (http://www.dmctalk.com) and yes it does have some of the info from the old website.

Since the old website had a lot of useful info, this may be a path to it. (if you are already aware of this...sorry). I'm not sure what or how to efficiently capture that old data. Maybe someone here has an idea.

Happy hunting,
Mr Peabody

.

That is a good place to retrieve old info. no pictures if I recall correctly, however, the previous owner / new owner of the site in question can request all that information to be deleted from wayback site. I know first hand because I asked them to delete info on my site and they did.

Reasons to delete old website info:

You, as the owner, wanted to change line of business to something different.
You, as the owner used your domain for something that is now illegal. ie: used trade marks without owners permission and were ordered to delete all that info from your site.

So, that info might not be there forever!

It's a bummer about the images not being there. But the text is there (and pictures embedded in the posts like the avatars???) It looks like the How Too's are there (text only).

What happened and why did the forum have to transfer from the old domain to this one?

Some discussion was had here on the topic:

I've been using the heck out of the way back machine. There's a lot of really good info in there.

I've had to do the database restore on 2 forums. The third time it happened it was a total loss. The SQL corrupted terribly and it didn't make sense to restore from a year old backup. We were just a small CGI group though so it wasn't a big loss, just a few tutorials. From what I've seen on the way back just having that old forum up in a searchable format would be a treasure of information.

I had built up a bunch of info for myself on the old site. How do I search for it without having to look all over the place? Can I search by my old user name, by key words?

The Feb 18 '11 date seems to be the most current archive that works.

With regard to searching your name I don't think that is possible. It appears that the best bet is to simply "stumble" through the site.

You can use software like HTTrack Website Copier to copy the page(s). I tried doing that from the archived DMCTalk.com forum main directory but for whatever reason it did not follow down the links like it should (or does on other websites).

And the worse part is that links to photos do not recover the photos.

Edit: Images are available sometimes and depend on how they were posted. For example the following link has images of the polished SS DeLorean: http://web.archive.org/web/20110225100029/http://www.dmctalk.com/showthread.php?t=15884

The polished DeLorean! I always loved that one. Might to it to mine, once I get one. Yeah, it's a fingerprint nightmare, but what can you do?
