I'm sure that most members on this forum would agree with me in saying that the Delorean looks its best in the unpainted stainless steel. Still there are some paint job like the ones attached that do make the car look good. I'm guessing that's the car and not the paint job. However that black one does look nice...

Still I plan to keep mine the stainless steel color. I may not be a fan of its engine, but as far as the Delorean's looks go, its perfect.

That red Delorean with the stripe has an interesting history. It was owned by JZD's nephew and sold at Delorean Cadillac. It had a prototype of the Island Turbo installed and taken to various events and shows. It was in DW magazine back in 93. The current owner bought it in 1984 and still drives the snot out of it!

the black DeLorean is VIN 4045, it belonged to our forum member, Bernie Manderville (RIP).

i never met him in person, but many people had kind words to say about him. he was the one who supplied the raffle DeLorean for DCS 2010.

as for 4045, it was up on ebay in March of 2011. im not sure where it is now.

That red is nice but if I had to repaint Red I'd definitely paint her black. Other than the stainless it is the sharpest color for our cars.

+1, my D is purple, and i plan on bringing it back to stainless steel at some point, but if the stainless panel graining is too messed up or dents and dings, i will repaint the car black. imo black makes all cars look good.

It's new owner is in MD & they knew Bernie, I believe. Not sure they have it back on the road yet...4045 had sat outside for a year without being driven. It started up fine, but the brakes were completely rusted & would not budge when I last saw it.

I think those are two different DeLoreans. The second one is at Doc's Harley-Davidson, near Shawano, WI. Went to see it one time and it had a price tag on it of about $33,000, if I remember correctly. Don't remember the VIN. They used to have pictures on their website, but I can't seem to find them...

I like this color a lot. Black and red are the most common used, I prefer black over red for sure. But if I had to paint one today, I'd seriously consider this one. It is very different and yet has a certain history. The color is not gold but more brass colored. :wow:

Did you take this picture or you found it online somewhere?? Because I see a familiar car to the right! KITT!!! :aniclap:

No, not my picuture. Like most of us I have a file to save pictures of Deloreans separated in production, pictures of my car found on the internet, one with great ideas I could consider and one with just... nice pictures of Deloreans or very good looking Deloreans. I got it from the internet somewhere because I like the looks of this color.
I had this one in my file. If I would have to paint mine I would probably go with a nice looking light brown (koffee with milk color) interior.. mmmm some combo!

Why would the car be KITT, can it just be a regular trans-am?

But I like this picture too;
I think it is not a real picture, but photoshopped. I do not realy like mat colored cars, but it seems to fit the Delorean well. (maybe becasue the SS panels are not shiny either)

Why would the car be KITT, can it just be a regular trans-am?

Because the trans am is black with proper tan interior, correct PMD seats, as used in Knight Rider, and only found on the 1982 Model, and has the correct turbine wheels, which were only on the 1982 model as well. When you see all those combinations together it is oly a KITT. If it were an actual 1982 original model, it would have gold on the bottom, with the Bird Decals. Since it is next to a Delorean, I guess it was in a car gathering, someone brought there KITT. :thankyou:

Small confession....
I like both of them, still not sure which one is my true favorite.
I put the brass colored one first on purpose, and see if people would change their mind. Obviously it worked. It was the wallpaper on my computer for a long time. It does look very very cool.
I heard on the radio a few weeks ago a mat colored car may not be driven into a car wash and bird pooh has to be removed immediately. But I would have no problem with that. But it is an expensive paint job for sure. I think this might help into making a decision which color to take.
I think I would do something about those rims also
and probably this will only look good with a black interior too.

You can get a mat clear coat that I would think could hold up. I wonder if a lot of that talk about the mat finish is because for years the only way to accomplish it was with a dark primer.

The Gold Delorean in this thread is an Ontario Canada car and member of ODOC. The photo was taken in late 2010 at our end of season Deloreannual in downtown Toronto.

As a local Knightrider group.. the GTA Knights.. invited us to one of their events, we invited them to ours. We also had a Bricklin and a Pantera there that day.

When I was younger I remember watching a show that had a segment on the painted Delorean subculture. Some of those people were fanatical about their paint. At first I was repulsed by the painted ones but by the end of the segment they'd grown on me. After all, a Delorean is a Delorean. If Red's paint wasn't so cracked and faded I wouldn't be in such a hurry to strip it. She's unique among unique cars. I prefer stainless so she'd still get stripped but it wouldn't be a nagging thought in my brain.

I've already started and then stopped due to what I found. http://uploads.m-cgi.com/kennyz/Delorean/Projects/tpan04.jpg

I'm certainly no expert, but that should come out with some heavy duty sanding and then regraining. Or, worst case just by a brand new t-panel ($500) or a used one.

I'm not really a hardcore purist when it comes to our cars (I'm all about upgrading to a DIN radio, I dig the idea of component modifications and upgrades, and concours just strikes me as circle-jerking), but one thing I remain stubborn about is the fact that a DeLorean shouldn't be painted. It was designed from the get-go to be a stainless steel finish and every part of its exterior was designed with that in mind. Don't screw up the design. :)

The other part that bothers me is probably what you're running into, Kenny. In many cases, the stainless itself needs to be intentionally damaged in order to get the paint to stick. At the end of the day the paint isn't fixing the damage, it's hiding it. Just like Bondo. No thanks.

Stainless all the way. :)

vwdmc16

Agreed. However if someone were to replace all the stainless with mild steel or fiberglass, then paint away! I have seen some D's that look particularly sharp in black, white and even red, however a quality paint job is usually rare and its always hiding the beautiful stainless underneath. I have contemplated making fiberglass panel replicas off my car so I could swap everything over to make a painted car, that would mean of course buying another set of fascia and other expensive trim. However I could pick to have a painted car on week and swap everything over the next weekend to get back to stainless without tarnishing any rare genuine panels.

I get asked fairly frequently too about painted DeLoreans, even though mine is not one of them. Just sort of something on the "5 most common chit-chat topics people have with you on your car".

I often have said to people there are perhaps about 200 painted DeLoreans out there. That number is pretty much pulled out of my a$$. Is it close do you think? Higher? Lower? Any of the chronology guys care to give us the stats?

Any of the chronology guys care to give us the stats?

Unfortunately, the Texas Club stat list shows only 28 known painted DeLoreans. But the stats are only as good as owners are willing to volunteer information, or by sightings/reportings that get forwarded to us. Ideally, I’d like to know about all of them, but as not every owner is involved with dmctalk.org or cares about the Texas stat list, I know we’ll probably never get there.

Nevertheless, thanks to all who have contributed information (painted and other types of mods).

The rest of the panel still has the factory grain, it's just that area that's deeply scratched in very odd directions. It wasn't done with a sander, maybe an angle grinder. I think it'll just take several hours with 80 grit or 30 minutes with a wolf head wheel to fix it. I'm debating on buying the wheel just in case I find more damage elsewhere on the car.

In the early 2000s Red was one of 3 red Deloreans in Pensacola. Two hundred might be a little low.

It looks like this topic might be skewing toward painted cars. Maybe another thread is in order?

I had the same issue with my car when I pulled the paint. Turns out that was the only part of the car that was damaged.
The rest of the stainless panels were perfect. I'm not sure why that would be the only part damaged?

I've been sitting with that panel all day at my pc desk while I'm working. I know some work was done under that panel to stop some leaks (and they failed) I wonder if the panel was taken off, set aside, and then dropped. Thanks for letting me know about what you found deloumis. It gives me hope that I won't find anything worse on the rest of the car.

When I removed the paint from my first car; white, I found that someone had taken a shot gun to the LFF. At least, that was the only thing I could think of that would cause that type of damage to the car... The rest of the panels were terribly scratched to get the paint to take, but the grooved hood; one of the worst scratched, is now in use on my car and it's not obvious unless you look really close.

Kenny_Z
07-22-2012, 05:24 PM
The LFF had a bunch of small holes in it? Do you think it they used a puller on it? It'd be a terrible idea but those old time dent pullers made lots of random holes in panels. Like this: http://www.thecairns.com/Impala/IMG_3703.jpg

I think we're drifting into the realm of what stupid things people have done to Deloreans ;)

All of your comments inspired me to mess with that Tpanel today. It isn't perfect but it isn't an eyesore anymore. http://uploads.m-cgi.com/kennyz/Delorean/Projects/tpan18.jpg

The factory (DMC) was working on painting the S/S panels. DMCH has a panel that was used for testing and had several colors painted on it. The idea was that since all of the panels were bolted on (not welded) you could have the car's color changed in a day by just R & R ing the panels. One of the options being considered by DMC. So, painting a Delorean is NOT heresy. I think some of the painted cars look great. Don't forget there are several GOLD cars!

i believe we had a thread about this on the old forum, and i saved a couple pictures of the panel since i thought it was neat. the way the flash reflects off of the panel looks like a colored clearcoat with the stainless shining through, but someone please correct me if i am wrong.

i believe at least one (possibly both) of the photos is/are courtesy of James Espey.

I always wondered if those were anodized since I've never seen a close-up like this. As much as I love the matte black D's I think if I had to paint a D I'd go with that dark red above with a tan leather interior. That color combo just strikes me as something we'd have seen if DMC had survived.

while i think a well-painted D can look great (e.g., Rob Grady's), i still think its a bit of a shame to cover up all that beautiful stainless. i wouldnt have any problem with a colored clear coat that kept the stainless grain visible. :)

Kenny_Z

Now that sounds interesting. I wonder what a candy would look like over stainless. I bet it would have a hard time biting into the metal though. The primer helps the basecoat stick. I have seen a Delorean in person with a satin clearcoat. It was Casey's and it looked good. I wonder how he got it to stick.

There have also been Deloreans that have been "wrapped". One of the more notable ones was the Dominoes car. Locally there was a local bar called the Breakfast Club that had one that was wrapped. At least with wrapping it can be undone with minimal damage to the S/S. On a properly painted car the panels are sanded into a random pattern so you have to figure a total regraining in addition to the possibility of repairing any damaged panels. (which you can't tell under the paint). Good thing they used a R/F panel as a test panel!!!!!!

I feel that if a DeLorean is going to be painted, it should be done with that "candy apple" look. So that the brushed stainless would come through. Imagine that look. It would be best done by wraping I think.
