Thanks! The underglow lights are strictly car-show only. I feel like driving with them on is like asking for problems from law enforcement.

Right now I don't have any lighting under the engine. I'm undecided on if and how I should do that. It took several hours to design, solder, and install, but it was well worth it. I've gotten some nice compliments on them at the past few car shows. I like to say "It's the best $13 I've spent on the car!"

BEAUTIFUL. Do you ever drive roads with those underglow lights on?

I think in Cali I'd be screwed. It's too bad these aren't really road legal AFAIK.

I like the BTTF feel it gives without actually converting anything. I might have to do something like this when I get a D. I don't really fancy the idea of all that stuff hanging off a car I'd probably enjoy driving to more than car shows and it's nice to see cars that remind me of the movie car without actually being one. Looks great!

Haha, yeah LED's are super cheap! I love the SMD 5050 RGB strips from china, I have a bunch on my computer and now my girlfriend wants me to install them in her apartment for some Star Trek themed lighting. I love the RGB strips because I can always change the colors.

Maybe red under the engine to match the brakes? I'm sure if you've gone this far you'll figure the rest out. I don't know the car well enough to offer mounting suggestions but perhaps inside the rear bumper if it's not too dirty there.

Now I'm wondering if red lights that are in the back of the car and just happen to glow on the ground would be legal....and same for the front with white. Hmmmm..... ;)

I changed my side markers with LEDs. They're not any brighter than the originals but they use less power.

I discovered that all four gaskets are cracked and two of them are two pieces.

I'm thinking of fitting a strip of LEDs down the entirety of the plastic encasing, now that I know that the whole thing is empty. I wonder how easy they are to open...

Tomorrow I'm changing the license plate lights to 6500 white LEDs. After that the only lights that will be filament would be the reverse lights, radio console, PRNDL, glovebox, and the speedometer area. In the process of looking how to take the light out of the Sidemarker (you pull harder) I saw someone put lights in the footwells by attaching the wiring to the door plunger.

How are they not any brighter? I added my side marker leds and there 10 times brighter then the regular bulbs! It was a big different plus i also washed out my lenses because they were dirty on the inside.

Yesterday I installed the new top door rubber seals on the brackets.

I removed the old glue with carb cleaner and a green scotch pad.
45209

I used 3M super weatherstripping glue ( black). It needed to be applied to both surfaces. I roughed up the metal bracket with the gray scotch pad, cleaned the rubber with dish soap and water, and the metal with isopropyl alcohol. Then I outlined the glue area with painter's tape.

45210

Glue applied to both surfaces. It dries to the advised tacky state quickly, so I did one bracket at a time. I removed the tape and then stuck them together starting at one end, and gradually to the other. You only get one shot to get it in the right place, so I needed to take my time. I clamped the ends for about 30 minutes.
45211

Both seal brackets glued - and compared to the old ones. I'll let the glue cure and then drill the holes to remove the rubber.
45212

I needed to touch up the RTV in the gutter in the area where the seal goes today, so I'll have to install them another day.

What colour LEDs did you use in the marker lights? I've found that if you use a different colour bulb than the colour of the plastic lense you're trying to shine through, that it filters out most of the light. When I put all white LEDs in my taillights (because it was the first package of 10 that came in the mail when I ordered them all), it hardly lit it up at all. Seems like anything in the colour spectrum that isn't what the plastic is doesn't shine through.

So, put red LEDs in the rear marker lights and amber LEDs in the front ones if you weren't already doing so.

Thats true! The color of the lens should also be the bulb. If not, the color will look wrong and not be as bright. Also some white leds are really blue painted in white phosphorus.

Installed a new VDO PM106 HVAC blower motor. Much quieter. I rode in some other D's to DCS16 and realized how much noiser mine was compared to theirs. That was the motivation I needed. It was an easy changeout. A couple parts get moved from the old motor to the new. I also washed the fan since it was dirty.

I got mine from Amazon and it was sold by Pep Boys. There were 2 left at Amazon and NAPA was sold out.

I learned Toby was a dealer of the EZ Oil Drain Valves. I wanted to get away from the stock oil plug and washer set up. It looks like a great product so far. I also installed another one of Toby's new products. He now sells a set of custom "dress up plates" for the engine bay. One plate replaces the factory "de-ice" shield for the throttle cable. The other plate covers the area where the idle microswitch is. I already had plate for the throttle cable, so I didn't get Toby's. See pictures attached.

They're red and Amber. I saw it briefly in twilight light and they did seem brighter. Maybe there's something wrong with my garage that it just sucks light.

I bought the correct length LEDs. Just waiting on the post office.

45212

I needed to touch up the RTV in the gutter in the area where the seal goes today, so I'll have to install them another day.

Today I reinstalled the top door seals.

First, I measured (and marked on tape), a reference where the first and last holes are in the door. Then I carefully slid the seal unit from the rear - under the T panel, into the gutter channel. I used a straight pick through the first hole in the seal bracket to pull it along the channel until it lined up with the mark. Next, I used a wooden paint stirrer to gently pry the seal bracket up into place (towards the outside of the car). I also used the stirrer to tuck the rubber seal down into the gutter so I could raise the door partway without bending the bracket. It took a couple of tries.
45289

Once I was able to open the door, I used the straight pick to align the hole in the bracket with the corresponding hole in the door, starting with the forward most hole. Then, I started fastening the bracket.
45290

There is no way that I'll want to drill out rivets in the door again and risk damage, so I opted to use stainless steel sheet metal screws instead of rivets. I selected #8 x 3/8" pan Phillips. They worked great.
45291

All 8 screws installed. They match the screws in the rest of the door.
45292

Then, I re-fastened the rear portion of the T panel. Job done!!

45293

With some care, I was able to remove and reinstall top door seals without completely removing the T Panel. :wrenchin:

1 - Installed new inertia switch. The old one kept the pump running in either position.

2 - Installed new US style cigarette lighter. This will allow me to plug in one of those dual USB charging ports, so I can plug in my smart phone.

3 - Installed new MattAligner. Wow, looks great!

But I have not tested these three things yet, ran out of time. Wife kept wanting me to come in for dinner. I don't know why she keeps on about such trivial things........

There should be little speed clips that are up in there for the screws that attach to. I got the same LEDs in my car and their stupid bright. Worst case scenario take out one of your tail lights and stick your hand up in there and see if he can feel a little speed clips that are up in there. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160811/77319e217cd084b92a082787010bf0f8.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160811/2fe61a8fcdcce54eed311b0fd6e634b0.jpg

Hi there,

I don't know if this is VIN specific, but there should be a metal bracket on the inside that the license light housing screws fasten to. On my car they were loose, so maybe they fell out of position...

Yesterday I used some panel bond to glue those damn metal brackets in place. While my dad and i were working on the car I was telling him how much easier it was now. Came in handy cause i had installed the LED backwards in one.

I also reattached both front fenders, both fascias. I drilled out the holes in the front spoiler and replaced with some stainless bolts. Ill panel bond them in place too later. I also reattached the hood and aligned it as best as I could. Thanks to the transmission going out on my accord I had to prematurely put my delorean back together before I actually finished working on it. My dad was working on polishing the stainless while I was putting everything back together.

My DPO sliced the vinyl on my driver's side rear trim panel. It had been riveted back on, right along the edge where it was under the weatherstripping. I needed to pull it off to replace rear speakers. I didn't want to rivet it again. Mike from DMCMW suggested Permatex The Right Stuff as an adhesive to bond the edge of the panel back to the underbody... either a solid bead for a likely permanent attachment or a few spots to hopefully allow it to be removable. I wanted it removable in case I need to get in there again. I actually did it yesterday. It seems to have worked. I'm thrilled to have that panel reattached without needing to recover it with vinyl to wrap and stick.

I used heavy duty industrial strength Velcro. It's been on there for a few months now and I don't have any kind of rattles or anything but the Permatex is a good idea as well

Hi There,

I sparingly drizzled carburetor cleaner on the glue to soften it up, then used a piece of blue Scotch Brite pad sprayed in the cleaner to loosen it / remove some. Finally, a cotton rag with carb cleaner on it to wipe it all off. The trick is to avoid spraying it directly on the car. Just the glue and your tools.

Carb cleaner also removes paint and RTV, so be careful. Wear gloves and work in a ventilated area.

Thank you very much. I'll be happy when there back on the car. This is a second set i had. The original louves were broke in 2 spots and these here came off a wrecked DeLorean but the top was really bleached out and scratched.

I began to tackle the last job on the exterior - re-painting the black windshield header panel. It's faded, chipped, and stained. I waited until I was able to take off the front outer door seals, so I could take the panels off the car to paint.

46015

I removed the trim panels, and discovered that the N8 truss screws that fasten the front header retainer were rusted. In keeping with my strategy of using stainless fasteners where possible on the exterior, I decided to replace them.
46016

I marked the position of the retainer with tape and carefully removed the screws, which were somewhat stuck.
46017

The front header retainer is stainless, and it had rust stains from the carbon steel screws, so I wet sanded it with 600 grit paper and oxalic acid. Then I rinsed it with water.
46018

Reinstalled and area cleaned.
46019

On to painting the panels...

2691 is back on the road! I missed an entire summer of parades,
car shows and showing off. Pulled the engine last February and put
in DPI's long block with cams and headers. Amazingly it started right
up and idled perfectly with no hunting. It has more power than the
BAE turbo I took off. Highly recommend Josh's version of the PRV.
Already signed up for the last big car show in Bigfork, MT "rumble in
the bay" Josh also includes with his rebuilds a box of exquisitely
machined stainless bracketry to dress up your engine....road trip!

how do you remove the lower grilles from the louvers? are they stuck just with the sorrounding foam or something else?

Last night I got one of my CV axles re-done. The boots, which were presumably original, were cracked and pulling away from the joint:

46065

Let me just say, this job is a complete mess. Grease gets EVERYWHERE. Be sure to lay down some newspaper and wear gloves.

46071

Once you get all the old grease out of the joint (I used a small bucket of mineral spirits to loosen up and break down the grease, then sprayed the parts with brake cleaner to clean them off), re-assembly is a piece of cake.

46072

The finished product:

46073

Installed:

4607446075

I used new Allen bolts from McMaster, which are easier to install and remove than the hex bolts. I took my time with this one side, so I can probably knock out the other side in short order. My CV joints should be good for another 10 years or more!

**I do need to address my output shaft seals at some point, as they are starting to show a little leakage, but that's a job for another day.

I installed the luggage rack option so that I could do this...

Sinclair C5 on DMC-12. Two Lotus chassis for the price of one.

Before anyone asks... yes it's well within the weight restrictions for the rack. I also cut a platform to mount to the rack to more evenly distribute the weight to the four corners after taking this picture. Quite stable.

I let 1121 initiate me. She threw her alternator belt. I was able to get her off the street and into a parking area. I found a belt locally, got it replaced, and drove her home. I did end up cutting the A/C belt. I didn't have ample light, space, or time to do that properly... but that won't be terrible to sort out with enough of those things.

These are the bolts I used.

You need 12 bolts for each axle. I bought 50 so I will sell a set of 25 at my next tech session I attend.

I bought 3 boxes of these, you need 24 but they come in boxes of 10:

They have a slight blue hue and are zinc plated. I also grabbed a pack of these:

Fixed my turn signal not canceling. The ring with the notches has an arrow on it that has to point left. Mine was point right when I installed my steering shaft upgrade.

Also adjusted my toe on the front end. I was running way toed out which I saw just by eying the car wheels. Ended up about 1.75 turns in on each wheel. Driving is much less effort now. I had to work to keep the car centered in the lane before the adjustment.

Replaced my 10 year old Dunlop GT Qualifier tires with:

195/60R-14 Dean Tire Road Control NW3's in the front
245/60R-15 BF Goodrich Radials in the rear

The Dunlop's were the same size and I really liked the look of the 245's so I wanted to stay with that, plus I'm not real picky if the tread patterns match or not. So far these tires ride really nicely! Also gave the car an oil change and a bath.

Dave McKeen sells these. Just a bit over $100 bucks. I replaced the panel decal also. There very simple to install. Comes is blue like mine or green. As a added bonus, if you have his fan fail module and relay, the 4 speed fan logo with light up. Since my panel is blue, the logo is green and vise versa if in green, logo is blue and lights up to let you know both cooling fans are running. Its a nice safety feature!http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160911/2adb7a4b56fccea5ada2edd4b914801b.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160911/e218813e36f8f46fe128bc839c4321d3.jpg

Replaced the rubber on my spare tire. Original kept air most of the time, but at 35 years old, was probably not going to do me any good if actually put on the car at the side of the road.

Pretty amazed at how much lighter the new rubber is compared to the old.

Out of curiosity, is there a market for old spare tire rubber, like for one of these Concours guys we often hear about, but that I don't think really exist? I kept the old one and could part with it if the price was right. Maybe a trade of some kind? I was thinking like perhaps trade for a case of All Dressed chips and a 20-pack of Timbits? Or a six of Blue Light? ;)

It will happen! I know it is frustrating since you thought it would be done by now. Step away for a few weeks and come back when you are less frustrated and have another paycheck in your bank account.

Today I redid my passengers side CV boots again. I did both sides about 3 years ago but apparently didn't seal up the ends well on the passengers side. Was throwing grease everywhere. It is now all cleaned up again and ready for a MN-DMC get together tomorrow.

seat repair:
in order: the tear, gluing it. glue dried and shrunk, color matched compound heat curing, final results
46403 46404 46405 4640646407

eyebrow removal:
clamp the fascia, but had to resort to busting out some heavy weights to help flatten it while applying heat. much better than it was

on a side note, when i pulled the front black grill off, i was greeted remnants of a mouse nest, complete with a dead mouse carcass. easily several years old (back from when the previous owner had the car sitting i'd assume). cleaned all that out and spruced up that cavity behind the grill a bit. that was... fun.

Today I wired in a bluetooth unit that I connected to an FM modulator and then hooked it all up to a new switch that replaces one of my dummies:

I'm not sure I'm sold on the quality of the bluetooth device itself ($30 made in china unit) but it works for now and will be super easy to swap out with a different one later on if I decide (30 second unplug old and plug in new).
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go rock out in the car. :rock_on:

How did you wired this unit on the Craig?
Thanks!

How did you wired this unit on the Craig?
Thanks!

First, I installed the iSimple FM modulator to connect directly inline with the antenna for a clear FM signal on 87.9 FM. This provides Aux functionality
46524

You can see in the picture it has an on/off switch. This allows you to turn it off when not using it, which allows other radio stations to not be interfered with.

Then I also soldered a compact USB power supply to the same manual switch the FM modulator is using (this is a "EDO Tech Ultra Compact 5V USB Direct Hardwire Adapter Kit"):
46525

Finally, I connected this bluetooth module to the USB power and FM modulator I installed (iClever Himbox HB01+):
46526

Then I cut off the original switch that came with my FM modulator and put the new DMC switch in its place.

Like I said in my earlier post, I think the weakest link in this is the bluetooth module. I have clear audio plugged directly into the FM modulator, but less clear over this blue tooth unit. I may swap it out eventually, but it is good enough for now.

Another side note: I have one of VideoBob's Craig radio harness extenders so I didn't have to splice into my factory harness for power, making all of this very easily reversible.

I got some more work done today on the windshield header panel and the A post finishers:

After 4 coats of SEM Trim Black, the windshield header panel is painted. After I install the new foam rubber roof retaining strip 106852, this panel will be ready to install.

46545

With the A post finishers painted with 4 coats of SEM Trim Black as well, I reinstalled the 2 rubber strips that were fastened with 2 sided tape. I chose Locktite Power Grab 3/4" clear outdoor 2 sided tape:
46546

I cleaned the surfaces with isopropyl alcohol and applied the tape:
46547

Then, I peeled off the red strip, exposing the other side of the tape, and re-attached the rubber strips that protect the windshield.

New N8 screws part SP10430 for the A post finishers:

New copper braid on the ground straps:

Neither do I... but after playing around with a dashcam and editing software, this is what I got.

It's about a 12 mile drive and 20 minutes or so down to 5 minutes of video time. The music comes out sounding like Alvin and the Chipmunks, yet the engine noise sounds pretty cool. Like some video game race car at 12,000 RPM or something. Makes me laugh watching it, lol.

Just fooling around with the settings and hopefully have it figured out in time to capture our local Fall driving tour next week. Love those fall colours with the leaves this time of year.

What camera did you get? Happy with it so far? I have one that's a POS and am trying to figure out which ones are better. Reviews on all of them seem to be pretty iffy.

The one I bought lasted exactly long enough for our trip to the east coast this spring. They replaced it with one that randomly turns itself off. I don't really care much about what a good one costs, but I see reviews on everything from $50 cameras to $300 cameras and they all seem to suck.

I'm also interested in a good dash cam. Don't buy the POS one that was advertised on facebook. It claimed 1080 p but the optics make it look like 320.

Someone should start a dash cam thread.

I will do this. Just need to get a few other things squared away before I'll have the time.

The dashcam is called "The Original Dash Cam" and it is model 4SK98C. Not sure if that will help you find it. It has the flip down screen that you can rotate out of the way if you don't want to look at it while in use.

I didn't like how my glove box door with a slightly different shade of grey even with the closest dye I could find so my wife who absolutely love this car plus my best friend and DeLorean owner came to me and told me to change the glove box color to Black with the grey stitching like everything else. Gave it to the guy I work with to redo it and this is the result and I think it looks totally wonderful and further adds much more dimension and further differentiates my car from others!

Installed a new power antenna - the old one was broken when I purchased the car. It took a little while to figure out the wiring. The new antenna didn't work with the old wiring. I did some digging and found a little relay box (??) (pictured) that was wired between the radio and the antenna with the electric stuff behind the driver's seat. I took the relay box out of the circuit and everything worked perfectly. So if anyone wants this little relay box to make an original power antenna work, I'd be happy to send it to you.

Installed my license plate which arrived today. It really feels like my own car now.

Installed LEDs in my HVAC controls and my binnacle.

I bought them all from superbrightleds.com. Here was my shopping list:

HVAC:
74-GHP: 1 green for headlight switch
74-RHP: 1 red for hazard switch
BA7S-W: 4 white for general illumination for HVAC
BA7S-R: 2 red for door lock and fan fail light
BA7S-A: 1 amber for defrost

Binnacle:
WLED-GHP5: 3 green for turn signals and headlight indicator
WLED-BHP5: 1 blue for brights indicator
WLED-RHP5: 5 red for seat belt, door ajar, lambda, parking brake, oil warning lights
WLED-AHP5: 1 amber for low fuel light
WLED-CWHP5: 5 white for general illumination
And of course left the incandescent battery bulb in place

Upon the recommendation of jawn101, I dimmed a few of the bulbs. Specifically my headlight, bright, turn signal, and general illumination on the binnacle. These bulbs are very bright to the point where they could be distracting while driving. I dimmed them by covering one or more of the LEDs with electrical tape. Worked perfectly.

Nice!

I have personally found bright lights on my daily driver distracting so I am taking a cautious approach here, but I may have to remove the dimming tape after trying this a while.

I have thought about doing footwell lighting, do you have it wired to the door switch or the dome light relay? I would like to go to the relay so they will dim with the dome light (I have Dave's dimmer relay) but unsure where best to connect to that circuit.

I do not get tired of talking to folks who come up and ask about the car. One fellow on Saturday, in Batavia NY, upon finding out that I'm interested in history, directed me to the local historic cemetery. It turns out that the only Confederate officer buried north of the Mason-Dixon line is there in Batavia. Goodness knows how he got there.

And then this afternoon I met a deaf gentleman and his son who were both over the moon to see a Delorean in person. WNY has a large deaf population because the National Technical Institute for the Deaf is in Rochester (ASL is the third most prevalent language in Rochester, behind English and Spanish). My command of ASL is almost nonexistent, but a love of cars is a universal language.

Today - Oil & Filter change.

(Side note:
I noticed the new crush washer was larger in diameter than the old one. Large enough that I was afraid it would leak for not staying on-center of the plug when re-installing. I didn't remember them that way last time. Is this normal? Has anyone else noticed this? Whatever, the engine run-up & shakedown after the oil change shows no leaks. I guess the washer conforms better once the plug is tightened.)

I had that happen to me as well. I order about six oil drain plug crush washers. One of the washers was the correct size and the other 5 were a bit larger. They must be for a different plug on the engine. At that point I was tired of the old style oil drain plug, so I ordered one of those EZ-oil drain valves from DMC-NW.

The washer on the left is the correct one. I got 5 of the kind on the right.

Finally started it after it sat for 2 years after bringing it to MN from TX. Had removed the gas tank, flushed it and the gas lines, new accumulater, filter, fuel pump. Gas had gone bad in tank, eaten the pump boot and turned into tar in the tank. (All that work done in TX over 2 years ago). Started after priming, ran very rough at first, poured some injector cleaner into tank, started to smooth out. Pulled it out of the garage to move it to another stall, going down the drive ran fine, backed up and started up the slight incline-- no power and knocking when in drive(automatic) kept dying. Finally got it into its stall for the winter, gas leak from the accumulator under the car. Got under and tightened fittings as best I could-- very tight to start with, not to mention tight working space. Started it and it ran smoothly with no leak. Wondering-- but doubt it-- if the accumulator leak had anything to do with the rough running and dying? Anyone? Anyway taking the louvers and engine cover off for repair over the winter, everything else will have to wait for spring-- cold and snow about to start.

I don't think a small leak would have caused the bad running. You probably just need to put some time on the engine to clean out the FD and injectors.

... to clean out the FD and injectors.

An easy way to clean the injectors is to run multiple bottles of Techron injector cleaner (the stronger version) through at once and on a partially full tank is even better. Injector cleaning at service stations can be done by running straight injector cleaner through the injectors. Mixing cleaner with a partial tank of gas is not as strong but may do the trick. If not, not much in money or effort lost.

After taking my engine to the rebuilder yesterday I decided it was time to remove the ugly steering wheel apparently installed during the car's residence in Houston. I thought some of you might be interested in seeing how someone chose to adapt this wheel. In addition to a badly butchered adapter flange, 2 mismatched bell covers mounted back-to-back, and a 2" thick homemade rubber spacer, the wheel was attached to a crudely modified metal cover plate off a home wiring junction box! And if that wasn't enough, the adapter flange was further "modified" with a machine screw epoxied and taped in place which engaged the turn signal cancellation ring. While the nut on the end of the steering shaft had less than 2 threads engaged, all was well due to the glob of epoxy added inside it.

I guess they couldn't find anyone in Houston familiar enough with DeLoreans to do this correctly.

I used a bottle of Racers injector cleaner in about 2 gallons of gas, seemed to improve the longer I ran it. Wish we had 2 more weeks of nice weather---but.

While changing the steering wheel I noticed some cut-off wires under the dash, apparently from a since-removed alarm system. Needing somewhere to add an alarm indicator light, the previous owner removed the e-brake warning light and inserted this in its place, held in with a nice glob of modeling clay. It looks like I am going to have to spend almost as much time un-doing his "improvements" as repairing the fire damage.

Installed more interior LED upgrades from Bitsyncmaster. Installed a custom made transmission quadrant shift plate made from 3/8" aluminum sheet with an added DMOCO shift quadrant plate. Cut a tinted Plexiglas insert for the DMOCO plate on a laser cutter. Performed a little cold weather (for Dallas) EFI cold-start fuel enrichment tuning. Hooked up speed sense signal from electric power steering unit to the EFI controller ECU so it now knows vehicle speed. This is in anticipation of a future electronic shift point controller for the automatic transmission so I can get rid of the transmission throttle position cable and the ancient (but still working! ) analog transmission controller.

Then I made this instructional video on honking the DeLorean horns.

I would have kept it in my garage and worked on the speakers and LED conversion but we're not sure that we properly blocked the mice out of the garage yet. We closed up the weaknesses but it's not worth risking the car.

Get yourself a bag of cotton balls and some Peppermint essential oil. Soak the cotton balls with it, and put a couple balls in the truck, engine compartment and cabin. Mice hate peppermint. As you work on the car, put in some new cotton balls when you lose the peppermint smell. They last about a month if the car is closed up.

as an aside, have you ever considered antique plates? removes the need for inspections/emissions and, unless you want to daily the car, doesn't really restrict you (or at least, given these cars, local police will rather take a pic than scold you for not following the exact letter of the antique plate laws.... Well hello Fairfaxian,

I'm in Sterling, in your back yard! Nice to see another owner so close. There seems to be a few - it makes me curious why the NVDMC club channel on here is so quiet? I was contacted by another guy near Warrington who started a Delorean club and they're meeting monthly. Next planned get together is around new years. Would love to meet up.

As for the antique plates, I had considered it, but I do intend to drive it daily, and all it would take is on cranky cop to enforce the rules attached to that plate, and it'd be a large hassle. In the end, I don't mind it so much, as long as I have a mechanic I like that I trust with the car.

Working with about two feet of clearance on each side of the car I re-installed both doors by myself and adjusted the torsion bars. Not something I recommend doing alone, but I don't have any help available. I put an extension on my engine hoist and suspended each door over the car from the rear, carefully dropping it down enough to install the two outer hinge bolts 90 degrees from the correct position. Then with a prop under the door I just rotated it down to where the other bolts would fit, fed the wires thru their holes, attached the struts, and then set the torsion bars. They will need to be re-set once the interior panels are installed, but for now they work fine and close well. I had to be extra careful as my restored '57 Dodge hemi convert is in the next bay. I have it heavily covered in blankets in case of falling objects. Having done this many times before, I knew to tie the top of the temporary door prop to the door so that it didn't fall on the Dodge when the torsion bar took the load off of it....

If those are the window wipe thingies (AKA Dew wipes: http://www.topsdown.com/product.php?productid=1150), consider using the Ford Probe window wipes. They are far superior and are an easy install. The hardest part is getting the donor set out of that Probe as it drives down the block :shameful:

Wanted to top-off fluids, but due to recent oil change, no oil needed.

I did have to add some coolant. The existing antifreeze is a few years old, but it still looks clean-n-green, so I didn't think I needed to change it. But just in case it lost any anti-freeze/anti-boil effectiveness, I added 100% (instead of 50/50 pre-mix). Ran the car for about 20 minutes to get a good mix inside cooling system.

They actually do! I installed the one kit on my car and my best friend's car about 8 years ago and we did back-to-back testing with one car installed and the other card not installed going around corners at the exact same speeds and you can actually feel a little bit more stability in the front end where the front end does not have as much wobble going around a sharp turn at a faster than normal speed. So I would have to say it actually does a little bit of something up front.

Installed a set of your door lights today, I love them! I got them last night as a Christmas present from my mom, apparently she bought the last set. She said your customer service was impeccable, very responsive to her emails.

I replaced my door struts and louvre struts - just have to do the front trunk ones. For the most part it went pretty quick, aside from the driver door being stubborn - the top disconnected easily but the bottom part took some finagling and a little bit of force with a small pry bar. The new ones popped right on (the Stabilus lifts from Hervey). Wow what a difference those make, and no more saggy drooping passenger door on cold days.

1. Changed out Boxi door struts for Stabilius ones and found they work pretty good.
2. Got my new steering rack installed, now need to get to the alignment center.
3. Put an in-line switch under the dash to turn off the interior lights while the door is open for long periods while I'm working on the car.
4. Found an old CD player from a car I owned a couple years ago and installed it.
5. Fixed my eyebrows in ~45 mins. Did something different because I couldn't get the low beams out (screws were rusted and stripped). They say necessity is the mother of invention. :) Will do a write up on this soon.

Did some rewiring of the engine harness. Since I'm using the GM ignition module which has a 6 amp current limiter, I run without any ignition resistors and hence don't need the relay in the engine compartment. So I made a new branch of the engine harness. It only has 4 wires (two for otterstat and two for backup lights). So that new branch is covered with heat shrink, has new 16 AWG tin plated wire and all new pins. That branch runs to the yellow and red bulkhead connectors which only have 4 pins in each now. The two new coil wires are just 6 inches long so don't run in the new branch.

Now I have to modify the bracket that hold that metal rod where the harness ties onto. I don't need the resistors and I don't use the light switch since I removed the engine work light. Maybe I will make bracket in stainless since they just hold the rod and are very simple.

I left work before the freezing rain really started because I was worried about icy roads. Extra good call because I never got the de-ice recall kit. I made him home safely before any snow or ice so I checked this morning and there was ice around the throttle cable. Never expected it to happen down here. I would have gotten a better picture but the louvres are frozen in place.

Not that having the kit would have made any difference on my decision not to drive today though. It's too risky to drive with any snow or ice on the ground in the south because most of it wont be treated with sand or salt.

I "fixed" my torn rear panel edging by glueing vinyl under the panel and along the edge, applying leather repair to fill the gap and covering with Acura Charcoal 17333 vinyl paint. I tried recreating the grain with a grain copier, but the leather repair refused to dry. I probably need a leather repair iron to perfect this approach. Not perfect for the OCD Delorean owner, but it'll work for now!

I started it. That's all.

Amazingly it started right up no issues which is a miracle knowing how my car usually is.

I haven't started it since just after Thanksgiving when I drove it from Ohio to Colorado. It historically eats my battery and also has been stuffed in a cold garage. I guess since the battery is brand new (had to replace the fried battery...again...just before the trip) I should expect it would hold up. Now I want the weather to improve so I can get it on the road again.

A hair dryer (or heat gun) would probably thaw it out. Even engine compartment heat could do it. BUT .... the trouble you now have is water in the cable and the next time you drive it could freeze while driving or at the next stop.

I faintly recall that the original fix was a bit of antifreeze in the tube. A better fix, IMHO which is subject to being wrong without notice, is to get the water out, fix the entry point and maybe a bit of lube (WD40?) in the housing. The trouble with lubes in applications like this is that in time, they can actually gum up the housing rather than provide that freel flow we want. Blowing it out or vacuuming (pull a vacuum for a while with a shop vac) is an alternative.

Just to add to that, the deice recall included more parts than just that shield for over top the throttle spool. It came with a couple of other fasteners and rubber stoppers. The little rubber grommet was meant to keep water out of the cable itself. The 4 snap ring washers are meant to go over the post on the spool to stop the far end of the spring from catching on it accidentally. And the other two clips were meant to keep the cable sheath from getting pinched itself underneath the air filter housing (by improving the routing as it goes under and keeping it out of the way of things pinching it).

The recall is of course more focused on the freezing aspects, but there were other pieces in that same recall that were for more than just the cold weather problems.

Recall is explained here: http://www.dmcnews.com/bulletins/SC-01-1.82.html

The pictures are garbage though. It is easier to understand with a good visual, but I've never seen photos collected to show it.

EDIT: Dana shared some great photos one day and they show 2/3's of the recall fittings in place...

One morning a few winters ago, next door to you in Atlanta, I took the D to work on a very cold morning. All was well for the first mile or so and then the cable froze (presumably in the sheath) at about 2500 rpm. Mildly terrifying I can tell you, as I hadn't heard about the de-ice kit at that point.

Ordered the kit but only got the shield fitted. Never could work out how the little rubber fittings should be installed. Lubbed the cable with anti-freeze before installation, however and it never froze again.

Keep in mind that the low part of the cable where the water settles (in fact, ALL of the cable) is inside the car other than the last foot or so to the engine. If you have a working heater, warming the car up long enough will thaw it out. But it's still kind of risky as the cable lays against the fiberglass and can easily reach outdoor temps with the car moving.

He has been focused on body work but he did manage to fix the dodgy closing of my passenger door and show case his skills on many other aspects of the "D" mechanicals.

Sydney, Newcastle, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide will all receive a visit and the work has been fantastic - Thanks Chris

Photos show Chris working on the dent in the edge of my driver side door then signing his work at my request, brilliant

After about 5 years of use my Interstate car battery died. It had started to bulge. I decided to try an Optima Red-top battery. I got the model 78 (8078-109) with side terminals only. Just got it at O'Reilly to make warranty exchanges easier than having to deal with an online merchant. Didn't have to pay much more than what most vendors were charging online.

My Red Top Optima is going on its 6th year now; I had my local auto part store test it the other day and they concluded that it is still in good condition. Money well spent back in 2011.

nkemp

The thing about Optima batteries is that they do not like a deep discharge and if they do go low, regular battery chargers may not bring them back. Some (maybe all) D's seem to have a lot of draw when off. I've had a couple Optima's go so low they were deemed a warranty replacement by the local store. And that was in a couple weeks of sitting. Since then I keep a battery tender on the car when sitting.

You do not need to get the expensive Optima battery charger. If your charger will not charge the battery, jump the Optima with a regular battery while charging. Or use a dumber battery charger. The smart ones seem to be the problem. If that fails, take it back. They have a very good warranty. At least that is what I have read. If there are corrections, let us know.

I've had the same battery the PO bought sometime before 2011. I haven't bothered to check how old it is, but need to. Even with the battery disconnected when not in use, it has trouble turning over the engine. It seems to be losing its ability to hold a charge for an extended period of time. This was a good reminder for me to have the battery tested, and if necessary, replaced. It's at least 6 years old.

I bought my car in August of 2008, and have never replaced my battery. It is currently out of the car for the winter and sitting on a battery tender, but as you can see from the date code at the top it was purchased in July of 2008. What is this high endurance battery you ask? A Walmart brand EverStart.

4827748278

I have had this battery sitting on a tender whenever not in use, so it has never been drained completely. I also watch the water levels closely. Have yet to have any trouble with it struggling to turn the car over.

I'm assuming this is more the result of good battery care rather than high quality battery chemistry given the brand, but who knows, maybe Walmart makes better batteries than we give them credit for.

Agreed. The original battery in my daily driver ( Magnum R/T ) failed after 3 years use in Aug 2010. The heat down here is hard on batteries. I bought a Maxx battery from Walmart for exactly half what the Auto stores price was with the same 5 year warranty. It was a no brainier for me. 6 1/2 years later, it's still going strong. I'd be interested to know who made batteries under that house brand for Walmart at that time. Maybe I struck it lucky.

According to this site (https://www.reference.com/business-finance/everstart-batteries-bdd2259e2254e263), today at least, they are made by Johnson Controls. The same company makes Optima batteries as well. Johnson Controls does not list EverStart on their website (http://www.johnsoncontrols.com/batteries/lead-acid-batteries/battery-brands), but that might be because of an agreement with Walmart.

Edit: Just saw the following directly on the Walmart website (https://www.walmart.com/ip/EverStart-Maxx-35N-Automotive-Battery/16795243#about-item):

Great Quality Batteries at a Great Price

Walmart's quality automotive batteries are supplied by Johnson Controls, the world's largest lead-acid battery manufacturer.
The batteries are tested in "real-life situations," Johnson Controls performs extensive tests. EverStart automotive batteries are developed to be long-lasting, high-quality and to meet the daily demands of your driving.

Removed my vapor barrier and cleaned up all of the gorilla snot and dried out duct tape that had been used as a band aid fix. I ran out of acetone so I went to the car wash and nearly overheated as I waited in line, then vacuumed the car of my leftover walnut shells. I picked up acetone as well as some type s leds for my footwells. They are plug and play with the controller I bought with my underglow leds. I got home and finished cleaning up the gorilla snot and installed the new vapor barrier.

Once it gets dark, Ill check my mock up locations for the leds and stick them in place.

The footwell LEDs are multicolor and I can control them with an app through my phone. The red ones are just domelight bulbs I found on sale a while ago. Eventually I'll have my mom redo the headliner and throw in some multicolor LEDs that work with the same contoller. The headliner is loose so I'm not worried about cutting into it to put some LEDs in.

I got the door trim back on today. I tucked the LEDs cables away and changed out my last incandescent bulb in the HVAC panel. I'm going to try to clean up my shift knob as well.

I have replaced several car batteries with Walmart EverStart batteries and have always gotten at least 5 years out of them, with proper care*. Not saying WM is anything special, but I consider 5 years not too bad given a relatively cheap battery. JMHE**

One time I tried an Interstate battery (not on my DeLorean). It failed after about a year (the store replaced it with 100% credit). That said, that replacement Interstate battery is now about 5 years old, and is still holding strong.

My car has NEVER had a cooling problem in all my about 12 years of ownership. Even in the middle of summer, with the A/C on (when it worked), and stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic in Houston at noon time. It always had a reliable cooling system. But then running my car in my garage a while back, the fans did not come on. So some quick research revealed it was probably a bad otterstat. I jumpered the two connectors as recommended and the fans came on, so it in fact was a bad otterstat.

Replacing the otterstat:

Probably one of the easiest jobs on a DeLorean, right? Well for me, yes and no. All went normal at first. Here are the steps I took:

1. Read-up on DMCTalk first thing. How to do it, best practices, what to expect, etc.
2. Loosed hose clamps on metal section where the otterstat goes, so to “flip” it 180 degrees, so otterstat is up, and coolant loss will be minimal.
3. Remove metal wire clamp and cut the plastic safety tie.
4. Eased out old otterstat.
5. Eased in new otterstat.
6. Rotated tube 180 degrees, so otterstat is back down on the bottom.
7. Retightened both clamps.
8. Start engine to test. Let it warm up to close to the 220 mark to ensure fans came on. Yep, success, but….

…. by loosening the clamps and rotating the metal section, the old seals were broken. Tightening the existing clamps should have resealed again I thought. But on one side, it did not. So I had a leak, and lost some coolant (probably < 5oz.). Luckily, I had on hand some extra clamps. So I let the engine cool down some (so I don’t get burnt touching the pipe), then adjusted the rubber hose on the metal pipe so to allow more space to put on a second metal clamp. Yep, lost some more coolant (maybe 8-10oz. more), but this second clamp worked. So now the car warms up normally with no leaks, and the fans now turn on at the right point.

So my 15 minute job on my DeLorean turned into a 30 minute job.

But that’s not the reason for my post: I was actually posting because I had a question about the metal clamp (see #1 in picture). My car had both a plastic wire-tie, and a metal clamp holding the old otterstat in. The question is, is this normal? With all the shows I’ve been to, and all the other DeLorean engines I’ve looked at, I’ve never noticed the wire metal clamp.

Does anyone else have one of these on their cars? Have I been missing this all along?

I figured number one at the bottom if you noticed how its curved that part goes on the coolant pipe while the other part wraps around and snaps onto the otterstat keeping it in place. The original Style clamp is not available but they do have a new one but I'm not really fond of it so I use the heavy duty zip ties and put that on mine and it's been on there now for over 2 years and doing just fine. But to answer your question yes those metal clamps are Factory and that's how the cars came with them so the otterstat doesn't blow out from the coolant flowing through.

12 year anniversary for my Yellow Top in my 1990 Ford F350 Crew Cab Dually.

Sits for months at a time and it has still performed like a trooper, most recently for DCS 2016, transporting D Rex.

I have had to "boost it" when it sits for over 6 months, but it has "recovered" well after multiple boosts, over time.

It's been sitting since late July (just after DCS 2016), so I will see if it recovers again later this month or next month.

I have a yellow top in my 2000 Supercharged Z/24 Cavalier thats been in there since 2005. Bought it in Augest of 2005 and was built in May of 2005. Getting one for the DeLorean soon from Amazon for $168. Funny how much they went up since 05. I paid $105 then.

Thats how my Z/24 is. Its starting to show since of slowing if sitting for awhile and since I live in West Virginia now and I can go weeks before the roads clear up with the salt in the snow and when I go to drive it, it has a little bit of a slow start but I'll go out and put a battery tender on it for every once in awhile and I'll find out real quick after that. If I go about a month without driving it it still starts really quick but anything longer than that starts to slow it up. Now with a lot of the lighting and electronics that I added in my DeLorean, are yellow top would be great but everything in the car now is either LED or electroluminescent and that's still really won't draw anything.

I decided to replace the exhaust manifold gaskets while the car is down for a gearbox repair. So, today, I removed the muffler, brackets, heat stove, starter heat shield, alternator, and tried to remove the passenger side manifold studs.

I sprayed WD-40 on the nuts and waited. I was contemplating heating them, but I decided to try to remove them first. I made sure not to use too much torque on this first attempt. To my surprise, they broke free just by using an 11mm crows foot with a ratchet, or a combination wrench and a hammer to tap the wrench. :meditation:

Here is the heat shield which I'll refurbish and reinstall.

Here is the manifold after..

I reinstalled the nuts just snug as I still have to remove the crossover pipe.

Here's hoping that the other side is easy as well.

I made my first 3D model of the the window switch and lock switch panel for VIN 831. These are going to be mounted in place of the useless door air vents and are beefed up in thickness for increased heat resistance. The cutouts are for Euramtec style window/lock switches.

Here's a screenshot of the drivers side:

Here's a screenshot of the passengers side:

Here's a screenshot of the blank panel:

I attached a blank panel design in .stl AND .123d format.

Now I just need to finish assembling my Folgertech FT-5 so I can start printing...

Dont see why everyone says those vents are useless. I properly sealed mine and get awsome air flow, just like the dash vents.

Mine are useless since I rerouted all vents to the dash pads. I mainly did that because I installed a double-din radio.

Honestly, if I hadn't installed a larger radio, I would have kept them.

Oh ok well that makes sense and I didn't know your car had a double DIN unit.
