Got my DPI SS lower control arms, poly sway bar bushings and SS mounting taps for the lower part of the QA1 adjustable coil overs. Now just wanting on the brake upgrade package and i can start installing a whole new suspension/brake package.

Very Nice! Do you have any pics with the lower control arms installed? how long have they been there, any signs of corrosion of any type? Also.... what are your thoughts about them now? Are they supposed to be any stronger than the originals?

I like those lower arms, but why haven't they redesigned those to be A-arms? One of the weak points of the design is the mounting point after all.

They're not installed yet but they will be soon. This is part of the brake/performance package offered by DPI. Kit consists of stainless lower arms, rear stainless radius arms, adjustable upper spindle links, stainless steering shaft, poly bushings, 4x QA1 adjustable coilovers with 10 way dampers. Front 4 piston calipers with drilled/slotted rotors. Rear solid disc's with standard calipers with stainless pistons. I will post pics during the install.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170129/405fad577cd0a1b4d449df8a88445855.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170129/2708964ae1586ca7dca661a9efe1c15a.jpg

No problem and as far as i know, they do not. These arms are for coilovers only. Notice no spring cups? The struts it's inside the little opening in the kit also comes with stainless steel spacers that go in between there for structural support

If you're using the UK club ball joints, they include a snap ring, so I would use it.

I just completed a suspension rebuild on 1098 that lasted the better part of 10 weeks.

A couple of months ago, I had the opportunity to "swap" my stock springs for a set of Eibachs, and I jumped at the chance. After a lot of thought about what to do "while i'm in there", I came to the conclusion that this is a job I only wanted to do once. As such, I decided to go with poly bushings up front, Toby's poly sway bar kit, new performance shocks, Ed's LCA brackets, new ball joints, new angle drive and lower cable, and powder coated and re-plated arms, knuckles, brackets and the like. Here's a few pics of all the bits before assembly:
487714877248773

Since this was my first time ever replacing a suspension of any kind, I had to take my time with it. Progress was gradual and involved many trips to Harbor Freight, ACE Hardware, and various Auto Parts stores along with a machine shop or two.
487774877848779487804878148783

A before shot of my car on the right:
48785

Final result after a nice long drive on some twisty back roads:
48784

From the ground to the center of the wheel arches it sits at 24" up front and 26-1/2" in back. By many accounts on here that is pretty much inline with Giugiaro's original design.

I have to thank many of the members here for their guidance and advice, especially Mark D. He was a tremendous help along the way, and provided a TON of pictures from his own restoration to assist me. He was also gracious enough to provide me the spacers needed to install new poly bushings into my UCAs and I am eternally grateful. Thanks, Mark!

The car drives and handles like a completely different vehicle. The ride is smooth, the steering is precise, and the car no longer "floats" up front! Best money I have spent on the car thus far.

Very nice! I am just embarking on this as well. I hope to have the rest of my parts in by the end of next week. Question: where did you put the lithium grease in regard to the springs and rubber retainer boot? which side? Also, do you put grease on the bottom of the spring where it meets the LCA retainer cup? A little confused about that part...:hmm:

No grease needed on the tops at all. Just re-wax your rubber spring isolators and you will be fine. DMC-81 (Dana) did this during his suspension rebuild and it worked perfectly. Here are the steps he gave me:

1) boil a kettle of water (you may need to repeat this if you run out of hot water).
2) put the rubber isolators in a set tub/slop sink and slowly pour the hot water over them on both sides until the old wax melts away. Be careful not to burn yourself.
3) Wash the isolators afterwards with soapy water and a cloth. Rinse well.
4) Put approx 1/2 cup of hard wax into a small saucepan. If you bought Gulf Wax, this would be one of the squares. The canning wax is food grade, but if you want to minimize the cleanup in one of Laura's pans afterward, you can line the pan with aluminum foil first.
5) Heat the wax on low setting. Just enough heat to melt into a clear liquid.
6) Using a small artist's paint brush (with a head of bristles about the size of your smallest finger), brush the melted wax over one side then the other. You may want to do this over the pan as the wax solidifies quickly. Repeat with another coat.
If you get globs or drips of wax on the isolator, you can smoothe it out by carefully and strategically pouring hot water on it later. Be careful to not undo your wax job!
7) Let the isolators cool sufficiently before installing them.

The wax is widely available and comes in a box like this:
48786
I went a little crazy with it and they ended up looking like this:
48787

As for the bottom in the spring cup, I didn't put any grease there, either. I haven't heard any squeaking in the few miles I have driven thus far with it. Of course, YMMV.

HI
Been a while since I have been on here but I was going through some of the show stuff and found some things I thought were gone.
One thing in particular is the LAST full set of DCS magazines all 16 issues.
I sold them at the car shows for $100 a set and am willing to let this last set go for the same amount plus shipping.
if you are interested contact my me by e-mail [email protected]

Also have a number of the Delorean Polo Shirts we sold at the shows. I have quiet a few but not all sizes in all colors.
They have the DeLorean Embroidered over the left shirt pocket. We sold hundreds of these over the years.
Blue, Black, Green, Red and Gray. I have about 30 of these left they sold at the show for $30 if you contact me by e-mail I will let them go for $25 plus shipping.
Offering these here and on the DML first before I put the stuff on e-bay. The prices will be higher there. Magazine set will ask $125, Shirts will stay $30 and watches will be $20.

Also have Delorean Vegas Playing cards reduced to $5.00 per deck and I have DCS Watches that I will let go for $15 plus shipping.
the Face says DCS in red. I have 5 men's and two woman's watches left.

Wow, you really did a fantastic job! The plated and powder coated parts with the new bushings and stainless LCA supports look amazing. Congrats on completing your restoration and getting to take that first drive afterwards. For me that first drive after doing all the suspension work is just as memorable as the first time I ever drove a DeLorean. Lowering the front back to the "designed" height it's a total transformation to how the car behaves on the road. It's some of the most satisfying money you can spend on the car because of how it completely changes the way it drives.

I'm so happy you found the photos useful and I was able to provide some help along the way. It sounds like the spacers worked out well for the upper control arm bushings so that's great to hear too. :thumbup2:

Got my double-DIN radio installed tonight. It's a cheaper unit (7018B (https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=7018b+radio)), and I need to load the GPS software on it, but overall it works as expected (not great, but not bad).

It is a little better here in MN, but not by much. We usually drive April/May-Nov. Of course it all depends on how much rain we get in the spring to wash away the salt on our salty white roads and when the first snow hits. Really itching to pull the D out after months of hibernation. The anticipation is downright painful. Looking at it every day...waiting for the big thaw to come.

Oh I bet! My last cruise was sunday and was hoping to drive on my 164 mile round trip commute to work tomorrow but the roads will still be in bad shape after the snow and rain here today! Well, the registry says that there are 40 D's in AK but I've only seen 3 others than mine. One (81) has been parked for 10+ years in front of a Chinese restaurant, another (81) was for sale for 40K just this last year but in rough mechanical shape, and the other (83) (nice) I had seen at a car show 9-10 years ago but have never seen it again.... I'm guessing the other 36 are somewhere rotting away. I've reached out on this forum but have not had any luck with responses. My car gets tons of attention where ever I go with people saying they have never actually seen one that runs...:rolleyes1: It would be really great to connect with other owners. I would love to start a new D club chapter in the North West!!

Battery tested bad. Replaced it with a size 34 battery with top post terminals. PO had sweet adapters with quick disconnects for the cables using wing nuts. It makes taking the battery in and out super easy, and I can use a top post battery with 800 CCA.

Since i finished my Megasquirt EFI project I've been working on a CANbus-driven gauge cluster, driven partly with data from the EFI ecu, such as RPM volts, and coolant.
Here's a clip showing progress. Gauge face is still homemade at this point, and very scratched, but the video shows what is possible.
LCD at far left will be mounted in the center of the cluster. Eventually.
This is driven by an on-loan EFI controller so i don't have to test each softwarebuild on the car.
Still have incorrect pointers and the gauge readings are not calibrated yet. Much to do to finish.

I didn't use the A/C but I did run the "vent" setting, but I was surprised about how warm this weekend was.

Over the winter I read a book by Bill Nye titled "Unstoppable" and he mentions that there is a paint that some people use on the inside walls of their attic to reflect infrared paint back, so in the summer heat would bounce off the house and in the winter heat would bounce back in. I wondered if it was possible to use this paint on DeLoreans. Not the outside, of course, but between the stainless steel and the cabin.

Been doing ATF change and pan gasket/dipstick tube seal leak repairs. I have a whole host of new swear words I've been practicing and thankfully no new holes requiring drywall repair from the Fists of Fury contest I was considering holding in the garage. F&$k me why do I have this car? My arms just don't go in the directions needed to get that god forsaken dipstick tube bracket screw started into the threads from underneath when you can't see what you're doing.

Anywho, what's the word on reusing cork gaskets? The ATF pan gasket that is. I had some RTV goop on it before and I think it had worked for the most part, but was probably the source of the leak in areas I didn't get enough slopped around. Seems it was this more than the dipstick tube seal in hindsight. Ahh, effing hindsight. I have my old cork one from what was on the car for years and it isn't torn, but it is used. Am I better to go with the RTV gasket maker goop or the used cork gasket?

It's best to have some gasket so the gasket will tear if you need to remove it again. Some RTV will hold to tight and you will really have some new swear words when you need to remove it.

Took mine out on Friday night to dinner - first time the wife had ever ridden in it (we have a newborn, so it's not often it's just the two of us!). Then went out Sunday to cars-n-coffee and met SamHill, who I count as the 7th fellow owner I've met since I bought the car in December (others are Paul S, Christian Dietrich, Matt from Fairfax, Matt from Drive Stainless, Bill Robertson, Steve from Richmond)

Then tonight I got the drivers side front spring and shock changed out!!! Whew, what a job! I bought some Spax shocks here in the parts-for-sale forum, and I just bought Steve's lowering springs when he upgraded to QA1. I get 2-3 hours a night after the kiddo goes to bed to do car stuff, so tomorrow night will be the pass side, then on to the rears!

I just spent the last couple of nights finally putting the new headliner in the D. I bought the kit 3 years ago right after I bought the car. I replaced the door pieces first because they sagging into my vision. The installation wasnt too bad. The worse part was trying to put the visors back on after a long day at work, I just couldn't do it last night. This morning with a good nights sleep they went on in literally 5 minutes!! Also put new door seals on at the same time, doors dont like them too much. It going to take some time for them to flatten/ conform to the doors but it will be a nice tight seal. Jim O

Nice, didn't realize DPI had a wilwood kit out. That's awesome; I love their stuff. I have a similar setup on my front brakes:

You'll definitely notice a huge difference in braking performance; much stiffer and more reactive brake pedal!

Be sure to go through the brake rotor burnishing and pad bedding process. My new rotors came zinc plated and the wear in process removes that coating over the first few times driving with the new rotors. Those look to be powder coated or painted so you'll have to go through that process while it wears off. http://www.wilwood.com/TechTip/TechPadBedTip.aspx http://www.wilwood.com/TechTip/TechRotorTip.aspx

I guess it's Wilwood he has as I don't have the calipers just yet today the manufacturer but it has to be something the fit behind the factory size wheel. Since I practically drive my car everyday and quite a distance to go to work and home I definitely wanted something to make the car stop a lot better than using solid disk brakes that will wear out over time quickly. On my supercharged Cavalier I have painted my brake rotors with high temperature black paint and then drove it a few times to burn the paint on the face and it helps to keep the oxidation out of the rotors and that way it always looks nice and new. I used to install a lot of Wilwood and Brembo brakes when I used to work at the GM dealership back in the day and installed a lot of high-performance braking systems on Corvettes and stuff. I'm sure it's going to be a night and day difference for how this car is going to stop and handle.

Yeah, my budget didn't really allow me too many choices. It was either buy cheap new, or buy good used, and I went with the latter.

Got the rear drivers side in tonight. Thought I could do both rears in one evening, but things were corroded more than I thought. Might have the other side done before Dulles C&C. Not sure if I'll have time to go or not.

I had previously replaced the factory original with a new unit from DMCH, but it never worked right. Oil pressure gauge would always stay pegged out at the 12 o'clock position. 5 minutes under the car and I had the new one installed and for the first time in 3 years, I actually have a working oil pressure gauge.

Replaced the SIM card in my cars GPS tracking unit. I have a Chinese made TK103B GPS tracking unit (found it on Amazon) installed in my car that operates on both a GPS signal and a cellular signal. I have both the GPS antenna and the cellullar antenna mounted underneath the plastic grill below the windshield and wipers, and since they are both black, you can't really see them. I had been using a SIM card from H2O wireless that operates on the AT&T network. Back in January of this year, AT&T shut down their 2G wireless network (old technology), which rendered my GPS unit completely useless. I found a company on Amazon (Speedtalk Wireless) that sells sim cards that operate on the T-Mobile network, that will work in my device. T-Mobile has agreed to continue 2G wireless service until the year 2020, so that will give me a couple of years to figure out what I'm going to repklace my GPS unit with. After about 10 minutes upside down under the dashboard, I had a working GPS again.

Replaced the marker lamp socket on the drivers side front fender with one that wasn't rusted and corroded. Installed a new LED lamp in there while I was at it.

Transmission coolant / converter pipe replacement - DMC part no.108493. Back in September Dave and Mike at DMC Midwest found a small leak in my hose / coolant pipe, and I bought the replacement part while I was there. I tried my best today to remove the old one, but it was determined it wasn't going anywhere. I got the connection loose at the transmission housing, but the connection at the coolant pipe would not budge. That connection is in a really awkward place that really doesn't accommodate big hands or big tools. I thought about dropping the coolant pipe out of the car and attacking it on my work bench, but I really don't want to open up the coolant system again if I don't have to. I've got it soaking in PB Blaster right now, hoping to try again tomorrow. Does anybody have any tips for this one.

Got fooled into thinking draining coolant out of the engine was an easy job. My dad's garage and I won't be freezing anytime soon. Also realized I had rented the wrong torque wrench and had to retorque everything. Needless to say I will let someone else do the next coolant flush.

Changed out the idler pulley bearing at work over lunch. The contractor that I tried to borrow tools from inexplicably and very conveniently had circlip pliers in their toolbox even though they're just welding pipe. I fitted in back in after work and now I have AC again. I was somewhat worried it would have all leaked out over winter.

I've heard that it can be done without disconnecting the cable, as long as you're just changing the bushing and not completely removing the shifter from the car.

Ya I just removed the bolt holding the pivot fork down and it was able to be rotated up 90 degrees while still connected to the cable. Just left it there out of the way so I was able to slide the shifter mechanism up to get the last bushing replaced...after vacuuming up all the rat's nest!

What did I do to my Delorean today? Totally mangled the transmission coolant pipes while trying to change them out. Made an appointment with DMC Midwest for the 4th & 5th of April to have them sort my mess out.

On another interesting note.... I spent most of Wednesday night under the car wrestling with the transmission coolant line fittings, tugging pulling, banging, etc. After they wouldn't budge, I gave up and called it a night. Went out to the garage on Thursday afternoon to get some hand tools for another project and found that sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon, the Delorean fell off the jack stands and rolled forward about 1 foot inside the garage. Didn't hurt the car, but scared the crap out of me. Could have easily happened while I was under it on Wednesday night.

Glad you, the car, and house are okay. What style of jack stands do you use? Did you have some kind of block between the stands and the car that failed? I am curious about your setup and if you come up with any ideas to make it safer for the future.

Make your life easier and buy some ramps. I never liked using jacks, especially on the delorean. I just dont trust little prong on a piece of wood.

If i do end up jacking the car up, I usually need the wheels off, so I put them under the actual lifting points on the body as backup. It was something mentioned on a tutorial when I changed rotors on my accord.

Michael

I don't ever use stands or ramps. It's a lift with safety catches or not worth doing.

bfloyd
03-25-2017, 02:14 AM
No... it was totally my stupid mistake. I had the rear of the car up in the air on stands, but did not chock the front wheels.

I've cut some pieces of 3/4 inch red oak and glued a rubber pad on each side. The rubber pad is actually a hay bailer belt I found at our local Tractor Supply that I cut up to fit the boards. I glued the pads on the boards with E-6000 glue. Anyway I've got 5 of the oak / rubber blocks made to use with the car. One of the lifting plate of my floor jack, and the other four for the tops of my jack stands. Looking at the aftermath, the two stands were lying on their sides, so it looks like the car just rolled forward and tipped the stands over.

When I was rebuilding the car from November of 2014 through August of 2015, I had it up on 4 stands, but also had ramps under each wheel. I think I'll stick to ramps from now on.

Yes. Getting the rests of the grain out is really time consuming, but it speeds up once I get to 400 grit. Eventually I plan on getting a variable speed polisher to speed up the process, but its rubber blocks and mothers aluminum polish for now.

WOW! I like that!

I'll add my 2 cents worth ... I got a GPS HUD for the D and loved it so much that I got one for my daily. I love the one I got for the D and hate the other one and don't use it. The D's is nice and bright. Works great day or night. The daily's does not project a good and bright image on the glass and as such I cant really see the speed on the windshield in the daytime. Both included about a 4" square piece of reflective film but I didn't use either. Try without and you may find it more than satisfactory. The primary benefit from the film is that it eliminated the "shadow" or "ghost" image. With the windshield, the reflected image reflects off the front of the inside glass as well as off the front of the outside glass and that makes for a "ghost" image. On the D, I simply set it on the dash off to the LH side. It only takes a glance to the L to see the speed.

I hate this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0148JUT7W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hey Mark - so I have the one that Nick bought and does NOT like. It was $22 on eBay and seems to do the trick for me. I have a larger speedo project planned for down the road, so I didn't want to invest too much in to the HUD. It comes with a reflective piece you can stick to the windshield. When I tested it the other day, I didn't need it, when I drove it this morning, I did. I will say, it takes a couple minutes to find the satellites. I don't need to know my speed in my neighborhood, so that's fine by me. You can also change the display to being readable straight on, rather than a reflection. Which gives a lot more mounting options. I'll see if I can take some photos of it in action.

If you are using a GPS based, HUD app as your speedo to replace the angle drive based one, another place you can put it is right on the ledge of the instrument cluster. The reflection goes up on the plastic lense in front of the gauges. You can position it so that it shows the speed on top of the regular speedo gauge, or just beside it, between the speedo and tach in that open space.

You won't find any double reflections in there and it's darker than competing with the direct sunlight. It's also on a slight angle down to help keep it from flying off into your lap. I had used a HUD app on an iPhone 4 and this size of phone fit quite well on that ledge. The one corner would tuck under the trip reset shaft and then I had it so that the power cord end pointed towards the centre of the car (the app used a lot of battery life over time). The app let you rotate the reflected image so you could point your phone in either direction and the image wouldn't be upside down when reflected.

This was only temporary for me until I got my speedo through the angle drive working reliably, but is another thing to think about as you find the ideal spot to place yours.

nkemp
03-29-2017, 11:52 AM
A low cost, and maybe free, alternative to a purchased HUD speedometer is to use an Android cell phone with a GPS speedometer app. If the app lets you flip the display, it may work as a heads up display. If you have an old Android phone not in use, you can dedicate it to the car.

Hey Mark - so I have the one that Nick bought and does NOT like. It was $22 on eBay and seems to do the trick for me.

My Daily has a more vertical windshield which may be part of the issue for me. So maybe it would work well in the D's steeper angle. Plus I bought mine a couple years back and soon afterwards contacted the seller. He said he would look into the dim reflection ... which maybe he did.

The other thing to be aware of is that the less expensive one requires a USB power supply (so you need to get a 12Vdc to USB adapter). No big deal. Just a heads up (pun intended :-) ).

Well a LS engine is stupid simple to work on and can fit in anywhere. With me, its not how fast i get there but how i get there. I used to be all about speed and such in the 90's, early 2000's when i built my Oldsmobile engines but now, its about comfort and handling, and yes a little performance and get up. For me, the DeLorean is a perfect balance of that. Handles great, for the mods i did it gets up and goes with a great exhaust note, and with a interior I dont wanna get out of. Also while in that car, i just wanna travel everywhere in that car! Installed my volume knob. This will be the master volume. I will have a separate subwoofer volume know behind the seat that won't get fiddled with too much. I chose this spot as it's pretty close to where my hand rests while driving. Also, I will have USB ports elsewhere in the car. I was able to save the original lighter, and this is glued in from the bottom, so it could be taken out and reverted to the lighter without any sign of it being there.

Picked up my car from DMC Northwest yesterday after taking the plunge and upgrading to Stage II. For powder coating I chose Rosso Red for the valve and timing covers and Bengal Silver for the intake. I also had the coolant and ATF changed since I wasn't sure how long it'd been since that had been done. Toby did some editing to my throttle cover to change "Stage I" to "Stage II." Car is running great!

I haven't really let it fly yet since the engine is still in a break-in period, but so far I'm loving it. There's definitely more power available, the car accelerates a lot quicker and has a great sounding idle. The owner who talked me into making the upgrade said it was a night and day difference with his car and he'd never go back.

I also think I accidentally made suede on the passenger seat. I wet sanded the dye down with 400 grit as per these instructions (http://www.leatherique.com/do_it_your_self_instruction/how_to_re-dye_leather.html) and it just looks overdone. I can scratch the old dye off now.

Had new front brake pads fitted and also the discs machined whilst on the car. No more shudder or squeaky brakes. It looked like they were the original Girling pads, they were very hard compound.
Also found a vacuum leak from one of the small hoses that is at the back of the motor, replaced it and now I have the engine hunting between 750 and 1000 rpm at idle. So frustrating. Do you think it needs the dwell and CO checked and reset as I think last time it was tuned the vacuum leak was there.

A while back we had some heavy rains here and I noticed my floor carpets had gotten wet. Both sides but moreso the passenger side. I went ahead and dried them up but still wasn't sure where the water had come from. Today I checked to make sure my windshield drain wasn't clogged, by removing the fuel pump access cover. The drain was totally clear. I also decided to get under the passenger footwell and check that my evaporator drain was clear as well, as that can also cause leaks onto the carpet. I used Dave S's advice and used a heat gun to soften the rubber hose from the evaporator and then was able to easily pull it off with my fingers. There is no reason to make any cuts or modifications to the hose, don't make it harder on yourself. Anyway I checked for blockage and there was none, even sprayed some air in there, but it looks good. With the AC on, the condensation from the evaporator came out from the hose underneath the car and onto the ground like it's supposed to. I'll be doing some rain testing with a garden hose and going through the water leaks bulletin.

noticed raw gas smell the other day after the car had been sitting for 3 days. no drips or anything underneath.

pulled the fuel pump boot cover to find the top of the pump submerged in gas. I think I may have overfilled it (as i got gas and came right home the last time i drove the car). the fuel level was at the neck of the tank as i pulled the pump out. pulling the pump out caused gas to start overflowing around the neck. used a whole roll of shop towels to ensure no gas got to the bottom exterior of the tank and/or the frame.
50547 50548

cleaned up the gas mess, and found that the fuel pump wires were damaged and needed repair ASAP:
50549

pulled the pump (Bosch 058-254-957) out to inspect it. its in near as i can tell, like new condition. rubber shows no sign of deterioration or damage. the boot cover is not sticky at all. (the goopiness around the orange fuel lines is just RTV that DeLorean One added to further seal/secure the lines to the boot cover... for some reason....
50550 50551 50552

I siphoned 1+ gallons of gas out of the tank and let it sit. so far no more gas has filled the top section of the pump/boot. I still want to pull the sender just to inspect that (My car has some non-original VDO sending unit)

I did notice the return rubber line off the hardline in the tank looks broken. but im not too concerned about that since its still just dumping fuel back into the tank and i don't let it get low enough where not getting returned gas to the baffle would be a problem.... but still something to fix (can make that out in the last pic)

I've repaired the wire harness for the fuel pump:
50553

Next ill hook everything back up, leave the boot cover off, jumper the pump to prime it and make sure there's no leak coming from the banjo bolt/crown bolt on top of the pump (or the pump housing itself).

After that I'll fire it up (assuming all is good) and just not top off the tank anymore....

If you had fuel on top of the pump from a FULL tank up the filler neck, you must have a leak around the return line pass thru in the boot or a possible crack in the orange fuel line at the Barbed end fitting. They have been known to fail. The inner hose is Teflon. The original factory hoses were Nylon which is tougher that Teflon. Spilling fuel out of the neck is likely to run into the fuel pump boot if the cover was on it and properly secured.

Also the fuel pump harness you repaired is still available from DMCH.
Economically priced too. Just saying.

After i dried everything, i don't see any evidence of gas leaking out of the lines (yet), which, even tho not currently pressurized, id expect to see some since not disconnecting those lines means they should still be full of gas. top of the pump was nice and dry this morning when i inspected before heading to work.

I'll see and confirm once i wire it back up and prime the pump if there's any leak on the fuel line. the boot itself didn't appear to have any cracks. I tightened down the hose clamp that secures the support ring and boot around the pump. took several turns to tighten it down so im hoping that it being loose just allowed gas to come up into the inside of the boot.

as for the harness, true DMCH sells the, but 14g wire and some ring terminals already on hand in my garage is still cheaper and quicker than ordering and waiting. but thanks for the heads up!

It would not likely be a leak on the high pressure line. Fuel would be everywhere and the engine would not run due to lose of pressure. It is possible the return line that sees no pressure, just flow, could split at the barbed fitting though. Snugging the clamps for return hardline and pump body should stop any seeping of fuel into the top of pump assuming no other cracks in the boot.

finished up my pump boot work.

fished out the broken end of the return hose (hose itself was in fine shape surprisingly) and reattached it to the return hardline.
tightened the boot support clamp (definitely needed some tightening - which im hoping was the root of my fuel issues)
connected the newly repaired pump wire harness up to the pump

jumpered the pump's power for about 30 seconds and inspected the top of the pump/fuel lines attaching to it for leaks/cracks etc. 0 detected
fired up the car up and ran it for ~10 mins and observed more (idling, revving). 0 leaks from return/boot.

granted id have to overfill the tank again to really see if it overflows the pump boot again, but i also dont plan on doing that any time soon.... :)

for now, im calling this emergency pump work complete

here's hoping that's all it was - so far so good. drove it today for about 25 miles and the pump (and exterior of the tank) is dry!
I had a VERY faint gas smell on the passenger side wheel well, but that could still simply be residual from all the gas that went everywhere when i took it all apart.

I was one of the first to have their car repaired at the new DeLorean shop in Orlando.

I was going to do some of this myself but, I ran out of time before the Celebration Exotic Car show:
1.They put on my Stainless Headers and Exhaust
2. They found a leak in Water Pump put new one on
3. The Radiator was leaking and replaced, I had the original plastic one.
4. The Drive shaft seals were weeping, replaced
5. Coolant pipe by valley replaced.
6. Rebuilt front calipers the right front one was cracked and leaking fluid.

Wired up standard door lock actuators and got them to reliably pop the door, every time. Took several tries with different configurations, but I finally got it (at 1:07am!) I'll post a write up on it if anyone is interested. I used a $27 kit from Amazon which included the remote module and 4 actuators. 1 actuator will lock/unlock each door, and the remaining 2 actuators are being used to pop the drivers door. I drive the car solo 99% of the time, so having both doors pop was not important to me.

Ordered a big pack of those scotch-brite pads off Amazon and tested it out on some surface scratches on my bonnet. Was careful to avoid too much pressure and used some regular old oven/stainless surface cleaner. Still some scratches left but overall I think it looks much better for 30 mins of work! Can't wait to get to the rest of the car.

Looks great! :bigclap:

Well... I guess the honeymoon phase is over. I'm now on my 5th alternator belt in 2 years of ownership. I replaced the DMC one on monday since I noticed it had started cracking. This belt had under 20k miles on it and it already needed to be changed. I had a spare DMC belt seeing as how I had 2 other belts fail already. This on made it maybe 70 miles before breaking and/or burning off. I noticed something was off when the tach started jumping. Then I noticed smoke out of the engine bay, the temp gauge at the first orange tick and the battery light had come on. I got lucky that a contractor from work saw me and pulled over. He took me home so I got my tools, swung around an autozone and picked up a valuecraft 15490 belt then we installed it.

I just don't get how I can drives thousands of miles on one then not make it a hundred with a brand new one. To make it worse I think my crankshaft seal is leaking again despite having it fixed in Feb. Am I supposed to constantly check tension and monitor the engine bay for smoke for the first 100 miles after changing a belt?

Well at least Im writing this from home instead of still waiting on a tow truck.

It wouldn't be a bad idea - belts stretch slightly after they're been installed and used a bit. Also make sure it is tensioned the proper amount.

it moved under half an inch with decent pressure. i was planning on checking it at a 100 miles when i had to get gas. DMC support says after a few hundred.

When I replaced my crankshaft seal and reinstalled the belts I read somewhere to tighten them so that you could only twist the belt like 90 degrees.
I feel your pain on that seal though, the muffler being in the way was such a pain.

I spent the past few days replacing the aftermarket radio that was in there with the original Craig, replacing the AC panel bulbs with LEDs, upgrading the linkage bushings under the shifter, and rebuilding the mode switch.

The start-off point (aftermarket headunit)
51186

Wires connected to the rheostat (for reference)
51187

All the crap in the shifter area. What is all that? (was somebody eating sunflower seeds in the car?)
5118851189

Wires connected to the cig lighter (for reference)
51190

Center console removed, exposing all the electrical wires underneath
511915119251193

Most of the wiring mess that I removed from the aftermarket unit(s).
51194

The center radio bracket removed, exposing all the wires
51195

Electrical connections on the back of the AC mode switch (for reference)
51196

Before installing the Craig, I soldered in an AUX cable inside the unit using Todd's helpful write-up here: https://1561project.com/?page=ipod-craig
51197

The Craig installed and the center console put back together
51198

The Craig has more than enough power to drive the 4 corner speakers, even good quality aftermarket speakers which is what I already have in there. With the Craig unit and good aftermarket speakers the highs and mids sound great. The only thing this setup lacks is the low end...

I was originally going to put a 8" sub in the storage compartment behind the driver seat, like others have done. But I thought it might be overkill for the type of music I listen to (metal/hard rock) and I also didn't want to lose the additional storage space if I could help it.

So I did some research online and went with the Kenwood KSC-SW11 which is a "powered subwoofer", basically an amp and sub in one small unit. They go for about $140 brand new but I got mine slightly used on eBay for just over 90 bucks. Comes with all the wiring (I have it running under the carpet). Sits on the parcel shelf, it only takes up the space where I was going to put an amp anyway, but now my storage compartment is completely free and available for use, since I don't have to put a speaker in there. It also comes with a wired remote that allows you to adjust the volume and frequency cutoff for the sub (you can see part of the remote in the bottom right corner of the first pic) I leave it sitting in the coin tray.
5119951200

I've been using this setup for the past couple days and very happy with it. The Craig outputs pretty good sound quality and goes way louder than I'll ever need it to, without any distortion. The sub provides more bass than I could ever want. And the almighty Craig is back where it belongs, and completes the interior beautifully.

How did you wire in the sub? Was it through the aux cable you installed?

I think those seeds in your shifter may have been from a rodent, it's easy access from underneath the car. I had a nice rat nest in mine when I replaced the bushings.

Gregadeth ... from the photos, it looks like you are missing the BIG rubber grommet/gaiter that goes around the shifter (unless you removed it during installation). I'm pretty sure that it is Part #: 105437 (verify before ordering). I noticed that there was various noises that radiated from the shifter area. I didn't even know about it until a visit to DMCMW. After installation it is noticeably quieter.

It is not clear why my car didn't have one unless it was a later add.

I had all four wheels rebalanced over the winter off season. I've put about 150 miles on the car so far this season and can say that it made a big difference. Really nice and smooth. I used to get a speed wobble feel up around 100 km/hr. I had gone over the whole suspension and nothing was out of sorts. I figured it was the wheels and sure enough it was. The car drives nice at higher speeds now. Lots of fun having all that raw power at your disposal, lol. Might go find myself a speeding ticket at some point!

Thanks Dana. I try. I've got Ben (Soundkillr) to thank for taking such beautiful care of the car for the past 19 years before I bought it from him last year. Working to perfect every last detail while obsessively keeping it as original as possible. I've got a handful of things to do to it now before I say "it's as good as it's ever going to get". No question Colin's (formerly Ben's) D was dirtier when it was originally delivered to America than it is now.

Personally, I had a busy week with the car. Chased down a gremlin with the A/C panel Lights and dome light module. Fixed both of those. Then installed my sweet new Plasma LEDs in the left hand side of the car. Did this intentionally to get a before/after shot. It's sort of tough to see since the new bulbs way overwhelm the camera in my phone as it tries to average exposure for a dark garage.

But, suffice it to say the old bulbs were almost dangerously dim - the new ones should ensure I'm visible in both Night and day conditions.

And I gotta say, I did an LED conversion with the standard Superbright bulbs a few years ago and was very disappointed. Went back to incandescent for most bulbs eventually. These are so-called "plasma" LEDs, which is a dubious name for the technology, but whatever the marketing fluff they are far brighter than the standard SMD style towers. Our once and future club member David Proehl turned me on to these.

The finishing touches arrived from DMCH today. Come Sunday, she'll be in the best shape of her life.

Parts include replacement bolts, washers, fan assembly struts, fender strips, hood components and some other misc. stuff. I also bought an extra luggage net and fresh DMC emblem for the future (15-20 years) just incase DMC ever run out of stock. Would you believe that this lot cost $650. Bonkers.

SO excited to install these tomorrow.

I'm sure the previous owner Ben (Soundkillr) would be very proud of how she's looking right now. I promised to take meticulous care of her.

Ohhhh yes, we'd believe the cost. You're among friends here on that one.

Decided to go with the OEM sticker kit instead of the stainless? I've also replaced one or two stickers with the originals but the stainless ones are really, really sharp. Just ask the fabled David Proehl.

Oh and hey, be careful when you do those radiator supports. The drivers side one has a ground point attachment on it. So you may need to be sure there is bare metal for that to ground on.

As for me, I tried and failed yet again to mount my stainless bumper letters. Frustrating to be beaten so many times by something so stupid. Tomorrow I am picking up a tube of 3M trim adhesive. Enough of this tape foolishness. And I ordered a Mattaligner from Grady to put all my new console switches in when they arrive.

That's great advice Jon. I'll be sure to look for the grounding strip and make sure there's bare metal. Yeah, I'm on a mission to replace anything that's a little tired with an original part so I wanted to go with the OEM kit. Most of them are just spares but there's 2-3 I want to freshen up.

Why don't you try the black 3M weatherstripping adhesive for the stainless letters? It'll have flexibility and good adhesion. Just a thought.

Cheers!

I do have a bunch of 8008 laying around somewhere. I'm not sure if it's as well qualified for the higher temps down there by the muffler. Probably fine but there's a reason 3M makes a jillion different kinds of adhesives - I've found they are all the best possible product, provided you use the right one for the right task.
