Which bolt Dave?

Sent from my SM-N920P using Tapatalk

Don't know what it is called. It's the long bolt going through the carrier, the lower link and then the shock. It's a fine thread and I don't want to crush any bushings so I would not think it's much torque.

Thanks. That sounds about right. What does it mean inner and outer? I'm guessing one is torquing the bolt and the other is torquing the nut. So it's the bolt for the lower link.

No, The DMV office actually approved "SAE 304" while I was there paying for it, and they issued me the paperwork too. Then I got a letter in the mail stating it was not approved. My guess was that "SAE", which stands for Society of Automotive Engineers, didn't jive with their rules somehow...

Took the car out for a drive last night. Beautiful time to be driving here as the temperatures are just perfect for cruising. I'd seen a Starsky & Hutch car a couple of times earlier this summer, but only met him recently (on a day I didn't have my car with me). We both ended up pulling into the same gas station last night. Must have looked pretty funny seeing a couple "star cars" there. Sort of like COSplay for cars... like CARplay. Is that a word? It is now.

Today I FINALLY replaced my non existent steering wheel bushing!!!!

Now that I've done it, I could probably do the whole job in about an hour, but whew!

Here you can see my old and new bushing:

http://i528.photobucket.com/albums/dd329/nuclearbacon2008/DeLorean%2010588/Steering/6A18FCD1-F827-47DC-AB0F-78AA3ABB56E0.jpg

I know what you're saying. That bushing is FINE! It just didn't seem to work. hmm.

And here you can see how deep I had to go...

at this point I was saying... "Can I put this back together??"

Replacing my bushing took me a couple days...the joints were so stuck together it took a while for the sauce to get in and loosen them up..putting it all back together went easy..though despite my best effort, the wheel is not centered..lol

I used aluminium flat bars(can't remember the size) but I was very careful and patient with my heat gun so not to damage the finish. I used a 3M plastic repair epoxy designed just for plastic bumpers to secure the bars.

I used aluminium bars also about 1/8tg thick. Im sure that plastic epoxy is pretty good stuff. I used the 3M windshield adhesive and hold pretty tough. I didn't have to take to many precautions as my paint was bad anyway. Beats paying the $1000 fiberglass fascia.

I got the other NOS shock installed. I had new lower bolts and the drivers side was no problem but the passenger side I could not remove the bolt. I got the bolt turning but did not want to do pounding with a hammer for fear of breaking that casting. I got it out about one inch by pressing on the bolt as I turned it then then it started binding again. So the old bolt is still there.

I had to do this while the baby was napping. I'm back to baby sitting again now that school has started (my daughter is a teacher).

Reworked my brakes. refurbished the calipers, installed new pads. Front passenger side was dragging and getting warm. Both front and rear passenger side pistons had a lot of rust pits. Replaced with new. Drivers side pistons looked brand new??

Fried, or just loose? If you've been into your centre console at one time or another, one of the ground wires might have come off the common bolt so many of them are tied to. It's a screw on the lower right hand corner of the HVAC/stereo metal bracket. It's a common ground collection point for about 3-4 grounds, and then a separate ground wire connects there and goes back to the fuse and relay area behind the passenger seat. You may need to get your voltmeter out and start checking for continuity on those grounds.

What her options this car is only 1 of 14 made.
I still got to get an alignment done but from the little bit I did drive it to get a feel for it this car sticks to the road and when going sharp around the corner there is no body roll at all!

Got the ride height how I wanted it and took it to get a 4 wheel alignment and that came out awesome. Too bad they couldn't get the camper on the one side in just a tad bit more but then again it is not adjustable at all from the factory and all the custom stuff from DeLorean performance Industries was able to bring it in close enough but I will say after driving the car all day yesterday it does not pull and drive straight as an arrow! As I read the Craig radio schematic, the BLUE & the BLACK wires to the connector are speaker grounds and are connected to the radio chassis ground (they are common with the chassis). These are shared between the speakers (I don't recall if they are shared front/back or right/left. From the circuit's perspective it does not make a difference. As such, you could do some diagnostic work running a wire connected to the radio chassis to the ground of the non-working speaker. If that is in fact the problem, then the speaker should work. Then you can work backwards from the speaker to the radio to see where the problem is. If you reinstalled it with the wire to the chassis it should not be a problem.

You could verify that the chassis and the speaker ground are the same with a VOM set to measure resistance. It should be zero.

Assume that it is not the worst. Assume it is a wiring problem between the radio and the speaker and is not internal to the radio. It could be at the connector (either piece) or could be where the speaker ground wires split. Or it could be a broken wire to the speaker.

That all said, I encourage a second opinion as this is not my field of expertise ... and I'm subject to being wrong without notice:D But I'm pretty sure of what I wrote.

I've got the custom mounting parts, flywheel, etc on hand as of a few weeks ago.
I've put together an end-to-end checklist of everything that I need to do.
In the next week or two, I'll put the Lotus into storage for the winter, so I can use that space for the engine hoist, stand, and the LS rebuild process
At that point, I'll purchase the LS motor from a junkyard
Derrin is coming up from Maryland the last weekend of October, and we'll pull the PRV drive-train and test fit the LS

Then I will be spending the winter making the (minor) necessary modifications to the frame, and rebuilding the LS.

I am targeting June or July for the car to be able to be driven

Once I've got the car driving, I will disassemble the PRV and sell the exhaust, cams, heads, and EFI system. The cams are already spoken for, but everything else will be available, including very nicely powder coated timing and valve covers.

I wanted to get those cams from you but oh well and I'm sure they're going to a great place. What's been done to the heads and aren't they from Josh?
Sounds like you got it all figured out of what you want to do with the car and I think my plans in the future would be maybe heads and cam swap, still gotta install my custom throttle body spacer which I'm hoping to do in the next few weeks. That's really about it for performance-wise because I've driven enough fast cars in my day and I like cars with a lot of low-end Grunt and the DeLorean to me has enough and I have crazy fun with that car anyway and that's the part that really counts. Besides I don't want to lose the originality of the car for what it came with, hell, that's always been me and I've always tried to build up the engine that came in the car that I had like my 1985 Cutlass that had a Oldsmobile Rocket 307. I made that little engine go pretty damn good for what it was and a hell of a lot better than how it came. Also there's a few other custom things that I'm going to be doing to my DeLorean over the winner but I'm not saying as to what I'm doing I just hope to God I don't screw up when I'm doing it because then it's going to cost me big money to fix it lol! Anyway brother man I'm looking forward to seeing your post soon on your progress!

That's the 800 setup I've been holding out for. I figured I'd have run across one by now but no luck yet. I had a 400 for a while but already had the games I liked on the 5200 so I sold it.

I'd post a picture of my other vintage consoles/computers but once I morphed a hobby into a business everything became a chronic disaster.

DeLorean related activities: Loaded firmware onto the MS3 box and tested inputs/outputs. Should have it installed in the car in a day or so.

That's pretty cool that he's helping you out but unfortunately I'm too far away and have a hectic work schedule that really kind of puts a limit on time that I even get to spend with my family so that's why I get up at the butt crack of dawn when it's still dark out to work on the car while everybody else is still sleeping so I don't cut into that but I wish I could join in the fun and helping you out.

Guy on eBay has them. I even liked the color so I got a pair (he sent me 4). Only 2 bucks w/free shipping

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/172687922223Hey Michael thanks for the ebay info! I like them more then the big one on my quarter glass window and I'm probably going to remove that and put it towards the back end by the vent like how you did. I ordered my sticker when I was looking at it earlier after you and I chatted and I got them off of Amazon and they do look good like on the back window of a bigger window and I have the same sticker on the back window of my white Z24 and it really goes well so I think this blue which I got the same color as you will go great with my color lighted interior and blue is also my favorite color! So now I'm giving a nod out to you buddy! [emoji41]

Anyone know where on the parts pages the little light bulb is for the PRND21 indicator on the auto trans? I'd like to replace the bulb holder if possible, but can't seem to find it in the parts manual.

I think it's the same bulb used in the HVAC controls. AS for the holder itself, it's probably part of the harness. I actually plan to use a short white LED strip and replace the center biased bulb for a more evenly distributed light. After Dave's LED HVAC panel, the lighted window switches, and my LED instrument cluster lighting, it's about all that's left.

I was wondering if it was going to be part of the main harness. It's kind of crusty and the bulb doesn't fit well enough to stay put. So sometimes it's on and other times it isn't. Might have to MacGyver myself a replacement somehow...

Decided to take the D for a trip to the post office. Put the heat on since it's about 60 outside and pull out of the garage. When I went to move forward it was hard shifting, very hard to get into second gear also (I have the 5 speed). So I turned around and took my daily driver instead. When I got back I drove the D around the block and no problems noted. Strange, there was no grinding it just felt like the gear oil was very stiff.

I'll have to try it again on a colder morning.

had the A/C system converted from R12 to R134a today (just in time for the lovely fall weather! :P ).
the high side schrader valve had failed and almost all of the R12 had escaped already.

I didn't replace any of the original components as everything else is sealed and in healthy, working order. I just had my local shop evac what was left, of the R12, backflush the system, fill with 6oz of Esther oil, put on the 134a adapters and put in about 2lbs of 134a.

A/C now blows nice and cold - even at idle:

After talking about it, I dedicated an hour or so and replaced my single led bulb in my shift gate with a led strip. Looks awesome and I used my monokote trim sheet to make some nice even red windows instead of the transparent marker crap. The interior light journey is complete although I may swing by the hobby store tomorrow and pick up another trim sheet and do the gear letters in green. Next up, all exterior LEDs.

Tigger has been my copilot in every car I have owned since the 90's. I can't even remember where I got him, I think my GF at the time won him for me in one of those crane games. He used to stay in the cargo net until his service as a pilot in my air force (seriously the plane looked like it was made for him...so I had to draft him) After I sold the jet, he returned to my car but this time with honor as the gear shift guardian.

This is what I did to my transmission selector (small strip of LEDs). It distributes the light quite nicely and every letter is nice and bright (and the red selection indicator can actually be seen). The only issue I had to address was light 'leakage' around the edges of the letter strip.

What he was saying is the only part of the fascias that were painted was the gray section, the black sections are supposed to be unpainted bare urethane. If there is black paint flaking away, then it's not factory paint(on the black part at least)

https://www.dmc10515.com/plasti-dipping-delorean-rims/

When I first bought #10515, one of the four rims had been replaced by the original owner because it had been damaged. But, the replacement rim was a grey rim, not silver like the other three. That’s been bugging me for a long time. That, combined with the paint starting to chip on a couple of the rims, got me thinking about replacing the rims. But, at $200+ for each rim, I’m not excited about that.
So I got to thinking about Plasti Dip – the rubberized spray paint. People have painted $200,000 cars with Plasti Dip. Click the photo to the right to see a bunch of examples, then watch the video to see how easy it is to do the rims.

Plasti Dip (https://www.dmc10515.com/wp-content/uploads/qz109j1.jpg) is pretty inexpensive, and is ‘easily’ reversible. It withstands hand-washing, comes in tons of colors and treatments (https://plastidip.com/our-products/plasti-dip/), and seems to be a ‘miracle paint.’ So, I figured I’d take a chance and see how it worked on the DeLorean. I thought flat-black would go well, matching the bumpers. (Although I *REALLY* like the machined rims that Toby Petersen is doing in Seattle!) You might ask, “What does ‘easily reversible’ mean?” Well, it appears that Plasti Dip (http://amzn.to/2xY5bqx)comes off by either peeling it off by hand, or by a high-pressure sprayer, or if it’s being stubborn, to spray the paint with Goof Off (http://amzn.to/2xYeAy8), then hit it with the pressure washer. Again, people have sprayed entire cars worth hundreds-of-thousands of dollars – so I figured it’s unlikely to do any damage to the aluminum rims of a DeLorean. So, I headed to Walmart and got 2 cans for $4.55 each (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Plasti-Dip-Spray-Black-11203-6/21015329).

How I Did It

Unlike the numerous other videos of people painting their rims, the biggest issue with the DeLorean rims is the fins. There are 45 fins and they’re pretty close together. And, when painting anything, the surface needs to be *CLEAN*! DeLorean rims are notoriously hard to keep clean. So, I decided to take the wheel off the car and take it to the back yard to clean it as good as possible. I used the pressure washer (and got soaked trying to get in between all the fins!) and a couple of brushes. Then I used a rag and my pinky finger to get between every fin. Then I pressure washed it again. I don’t think I could have gotten it any cleaner. I used an air hose to blow out any excess water and let it dry in the sun until it was a bone-dry.

Again, with the fins being so close together, I knew it would be difficult to get good spray coverage. So, I came up with the idea of putting the wheel on an IKEA lazy susan (Snudda) (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90074483/) so I could spin the wheel and cover everything evenly. I covered the lazy susan with paper towels, then put it on top of a box I covered with a trash bag. Once I got the wheel centered so it would spin easily, I was ready to go. And it worked better than I’d hoped!

Even though I watched a lot of videos (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%22plasti+dip%22), I thought I would mask-off the tire, just to make it easier to clean the tire from the overspray. Yeah… Nothing I tried would stick to the tires! So I just trusted the videos. One of the things I learned from the videos, is that you want to do a few very light coats, to allow the paint to ‘bond’ to the surface. Which gives later coats something to stick to. Again, it worked perfectly. I ultimately did 6 coats (about 1/2 of 1 can), waiting 25 minutes between each coat. And the next day, just like in the videos, the overspray on the tires came off as easy as sliding an egg out of a teflon-coated pan! Then it was just a matter of spraying some tire cleaner on a rag and wiping off the remnant from the tire.
I’m going to do this to the other three rims before DeLorean Weekend (http://www.deloreanweekend.com/), to see how well it holds up over the next 3 weeks, and the drive to Vegas. If it looks awful, I’ll take more pics and show it – then I’ll stop by a self-service car wash and do some cleaning. If it looks good, I’ll add more photos to this post as an ‘update’, to show how it’s held up over time. If it does hold up, I hope it inspires other DeLorean owners to give it a try. And if you’re thinking “I don’t like flat black”, maybe you’d like ‘Blaze Orange’ with a Metalizer finish (https://plastidip.com/our-products/plasti-dip/)…

Come to think of it, I don't think my low fuel light has come one once since I swapped to LEDs a few years back. I bet I have a similar issue and would need to swap back in an incandescent to have it work again. Strange, but not a huge deal. I'll add that to my long to-do list.

Short version: Bad connection at reverse light switch, easily fixed.

Last weekend a buddy pointed out that the both reverse lights were dead. Went after it today. Did not suspect the bulbs or the light boards since both lamps were out.

First, verified that Fuse 16 wasn't blown. I had cleaned all of the fuse blades a few months ago, so no question of good fuse contact.

Next, using a 12V test lamp, verified power was OK to the reverse light switch wire at the (red) bulkhead fitting with ignition ON.

After this I checked the reverse light switch connections. Pulled both of the female connectors off it. Used 100grit sandpaper to the switch's male terminals to brighten them up hoping not to need a new switch. With the switch connectors back in place the reverse lamps were both back in action.

Problem solved.

Were the female connections you cleaned with 100grit sandpaper located at the bulkhead connector by the coil? where is this switch located?

Thanks for asking, Luigi.

The cleaning was done at the switch itself. Find it on the driver side of the gearbox, more or less centered along that side - the only thing there with wires on it. The rear of the car was up on ramps for this job.

I cleaned the male terminals on the switch without removing it from the transmission. Did nothing to the female connectors there, both of which have the typical DeLorean square black plastic shrouds over them. For all I know just pulling the connectors off and pushing them back onto the terminals again (to freshen up the connection) might have worked. And finer sandpaper would have worked, too. 100 is what I had handy at the time.

I had sanded my bulkhead connectors about 5 yrs ago as a preventive measure: only did the rev. light testing at that point this time.

Celebrated 1 year being married to my wife and took the DeLorean along the Shenandoah Valley and back to where we were married 1 year ago! Took the car to country vineyards and all through the mountains! Im thankful of my wife and for her being a gear head herself and loving my DeLorean and wanting it in our wedding and saying the car is family! Went back to Berryville VA to where it began! Took 831 for its first drive in about a year, and pumped it with premium to make up for octane loss. I'm still working to finish the interior completely, but unfortunately, all the R-12 has leaked out somehow. :bigcry:

Hope I don't have to replace anything, since that would require new hoses for the late style accumulator...

i recently had the same thing happen (high side's schrader valve failed, leaking almost all the R12). for what it's worth, i took it to my local shop and had them remove what was left of the R12, backflush the entire system to clean it out without disturbing any of the connections, install R134a adapters, and vacuum pressure test it (it held just fine after the schrader valves/adapters were replaced/installed).

they then filled the stock compressor with ester oil, and put in ~2lbs of R134a.

my AC now blows 43-45deg and i didn't change/replace a single original component. even if the hoses do leak a little bit of r134a over time, buying a recharge can from any local auto parts store is going to be a lot cheaper (and easier) than replacing the hoses, especially when they're in good condition.

Well today, I've decided to just rebuild the AC system and convert it to r134a. With the hot and humid weather down here, I'd rather not worry about my AC any time soon.

I have already removed the compressor and accumulator from the car, and soon, those damned hoses will also be out.

It was obviously time to rebuild the AC system once I took a look at the orfice tube...

There are bits and pieces of metal lodged in the filter. Also, with that kind of bend in the evap pipe, I guess I shouldn't go with a variable orfice valve.

I'm actually going with the compressor, accumulator, and line kit from DPI, and I will stop at DMCH tomorrow to buy a new condenser as well. Yes, $900 for good AC is a bit steep, but at least I won't have to worry about it for another 15 years...hopefully.

Today I finally buttoned everything back up after my brake overhaul. Scrubbed an vacuumed the interior of the trunk and also cleaned the floor mats. (found a video of a guy who sprays with engine degreaser, then laundry detergent with a scrub brush, then a wetdry vac. My floor mats looks WAY better!) Finally finished my RetroSound Model 2 install (my rear speakers are blown and wow to get to them! sheesh! New fronts installed) Also took went on a drive, the first in a while. Noticed my volt meter was showing under 13V, but at the battery i'm showing 14.2v. THEN I went for a drive and the dash showed around 8v, but no battery light. Again, 14.2v at the battery while running. Its just a gauge. My driver door is also sticking a bit on the front striker. Man what I would give to get my doors aligned by someone who knows what they're doing. Found my locks are also kinda screwed up. A little afraid of getting locked inside... also my clutch pedal squeaks. Little things!

I actually ordered only the line kit from DPI. I was going to buy DMCH's condenser and compressor today, only to find out they are are closed until the 5th. With that, I ordered an aftermarket Sanden SD7H15 from a reputable seller on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=263230581427&ppid=PPX000605&cnac=US&rsta=en_US(en_US)&cust=91A27405VN429610M&unptid=5ff12648-a7c8-11e7-8fbd-441ea14e0a7c&t=&cal=41c54f058a686&calc=41c54f058a686&calf=41c54f058a686&unp_tpcid=xpt-auction-GXOTx&page=main:email&pgrp=main:email&e=op&mchn=em&s=ci&mail=sys), and I found an unpainted condenser (http://www.aapak.com/12-in-x-28-inbrUniversal-Parallel-Flow-CondenserbrUnpainted_p_116.html) that will hopefully fit in place of the original serpentine.

I have the same compressor and it's great! 7-cyl is noticeably smoother than the SD5, and the DPI kit fittings at the compressor head fit much better with the SD7's vertically oriented ports. You could probably rotate the SD5 head to match but these ship rotated by default and the lines sit much more naturally.

I have the 26" universal condenser and the whole system works great. There weren't any universal 28" at the time *shakes fist*

The heads of the Sanden compressors are adjustable in their orientation, but you have to do a little work to the compressor. There are registration pins behind the compressor head that force it to have the ports at the 12 o'clock position, or the 6 o'clock position. If you remove the head off the back of the compressor and shave off the registration pins with a dremel tool, you can rotate the head any direction that you deem necessary to work with your particular car. On mine, I rotated the head one bolt hole counter-clockwise so the fittings would be oriented where the hoses and charge ports would clear the engine cover.

Ahh, that was it. I think I'd read your writeup from when you made that modification to your car. I do like the idea of having the lines connect directly as you have instead of through the adapter blocks!

This pic shows how the lines route with my SD7 / type Q-something (QD?) cylinder head. With the OEM style SD5 they were farther up and kind of in the way.

The further back I get away from the entrance door, the less dust I encounter. But there are definitely a few millimeters of dust all over the car. I liked the yellow zinc plating. Here it is installed, on the negative post as recommended. Just tighten the green knob to turn the battery on, and loosen it to disconnect. You can also remove the knob as a measure of antitheft security.

I have had one very similar to that on my car for just about the entire 10 years I've owned it. The knob is red on the one I have. It was a DMCX product way back when. I don't see it on their website at the moment though.

I found getting it onto the negative terminal (as mentioned in the instructions and as you noted) a pain in the butt because of the battery compartment on our cars. It's manageable to get it installed on the negative terminal, but it wasn't very easily reachable when you went to use it to disconnect the battery. That'd be ok in a planned situation, but not so much if you had an electrical fire perhaps and needed it off ASAP.

I have had mine installed on the positive terminal because of that the whole time. I've never had any issues with it there and it's easier to access. No electrical fires to speak of thankfully though either. Just wanted to mention that as I was concerned initially as to whether it would be okay to install it on the positive terminal (and against the directions it came with).

I don't see any reason to have it mounted on the ground as opposed to the positive post.

I have a cut off switch nearly identical to the one you installed in these photos and I have it on the positive terminal. As mentioned earlier, in an electrical fire getting to it quickly and easily is the most important thing.

Thanks for the comments and pictures guys. It's good to see that the battery disconnect switch is a tried and true design! I'll have to consider putting it on the positive post then, as it would certainly be easier to reach, especially in an emergency as noted.

Mine look almost exactly like this, except the knob is green. I have used it for almost 10 years now. And I must have a backwards battery, as the negative terminal is closest to the front, and so easiest to reach from the drivers seat, and so that is the post I have it on.

Anyway, what is the target HP you are shooting for.

300-325 at the wheels would be nice.

I had the car out last night for another beauty drive. The weather here has been unseasonably warm for October. I'm coming up on 2,000 miles this season and that'll be about the 2nd or 3rd most in a year since I got it. Which was exactly ten years ago today.

Here is 3937 on the day it arrived, October 10th, 2007:

53911

And here it is last night, closing the book on my first decade of ownership:

53912

The car came with a list of problems as long as my arm. Now there's hardly anything on that list at all. A gas station guy came over and said how immaculate the car is and he was really impressed with it. I think I am finally too.
Awesome! I will be doing a 10 yr. side by side in another 18 months.

It can. Between upgrading some internals, and how exaggerated the UN1's fragility is, I have no worries.

Didn't John decide on our transmission because it was from Renaults racing division?

Yeah, those wheels sure are sharp. I guess what I'm asking is if I wanted the wheels you have, would I need to custom order that finish with John or is that just the way they come if you order silver finish?Oh no, if you go to his site, DeLoreanAutoParts.com you can get the full powdercoat finish or this, no special order needed. [emoji3] He will send you the wheels and give you a bit to get them swapped over and not charge a core fee. I thing i paid around $900 with shipping and everything.

Great pic, it's cool to see that your son like the car's too :)My son is 8 and he LOVES this car! He's always out helping me wipe it off and changing the oil and he always likes to get my creeper and crawl under the car to wipe off the exhaust. I'm glad he really likes this car because I got to leave it to somebody when I get too old to drive so I've been teaching him a lot of things about it so he can learn for when he's old enough to drive!

You mean Josh, right? Nick used the LS1, Josh and I are using the LS4. The LS4 is slightly down on power, has a different bell housing bolt pattern, a flatter front drive (since it was from a FWD car), and is a good bit cheaper to purchase.

DMC5180

Cool, maybe it was Josh. He’s in Ragina, correct? Does the flatter front give you enough clearance so you don’t have to cut onto the closing panel?

Yup, Josh up in Regina. The flatter front drive gives you approximately 3" of clearance between the motor and the rear crossmember, depending on how you place the motor & transmission mounts.

Took my car for a drive this past weekend, out to my summer house and back. It's about a 170 mile trip, during the 'drive out portion', I heard my Alternator belt squealing during take-off from stoplights. I knew my belt was a little loose, but I tightened it before my journey. How did it loosen? :dunno:

Anyway I'd shut off the A/C and my Stereo system (to reduce load) and the noise went away. I just hoped that I wouldn't throw my Alternator belt, anyway arrived just fine. (how did it get loose)

Now the other issue is after installing my new alternator, it sounded as if a bird was tweeting in my engine compartment! During the installation of this item, I installed a new air filter and a new 'cardboard' flex tubing to the pontoon air intake, these items were off during the initial start-up to check everything. I just thought that I was hearing the "intake swoosh" of no air filter in place.

After assembling everything back together, the sound persisted......so I have a little bird chirping noise in the engine compartment, I can live with until this alternator dies. :rolleyes1:

Did I mention that this is an Hervey Alternator, won't do that again. I knew better, but I'm retired so $$ can be difficult to save for different maintenance jobs. I even emailed him about this issue, no reply to date.

Upgrade on my electrical system......

http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?241-What-have-you-done-to-your-DeLorean-today&p=64249&viewfull=1#post64249 Post # 1259 thank-you Matt & Josh Q & Ozzie for photo.

This thread discusses using some parts from McMaster Carr to replace the Alternator bracket, (that can be a two person job to adjust belt tension)

Now I can adjust by myself, whenever the belt becomes loose. The next change was I installed an additional Ground Cable from engine to frame. Gauge now shows great voltage.

The new alternator also has a "battery sense" wire to monitor the battery voltage, not system voltage. (longer alternator life and better voltage output)

Now I'm waiting on a complete interior and exterior LED bulb set from a DeLorean vendor. Looking forward to 'seeing' these changes as well as reduce the electrical load.

Yea, that looks like the little sandwich of spacers and washers and such you make for the receptacle end of the seatbelts (the receiver end that bolts into the frame).

Yea, that looks like the little sandwich of spacers and washers and such you make for the receptacle end of the seatbelts (the receiver end that bolts into the frame). The spacer is the pivot for the seat belt up at the top of the rear speaker panel or down at the bottom at the rocker panel next to the seat. The black part keeps the panel safe from rubbing as that anchor point moves around. This is a pic from a year and a half ago when i redid my entire interior. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171020/27c1d0d73288a1864b2088cd12efbb09.jpg

I hadn't realized they made those gasket/washer looking parts to clean up the top of the seatbelt anchor point. Thanks for mentioning Christian.

I did have another car related thought from earlier today...

I have one of these plugging my mixture adjustment hole: http://store.delorean.com/p-6399-plug-removeable.aspx

I noticed recently that the rubber end is pretty hard now and it doesn't fit super snug in that hole anymore. Like it got dried out a little. It's not loose enough to completely fall out on its own, but it can move a little just with the engine vibrating while it's running.

Anyone else find this happen to their own plug? Did you do anything special to soften it up a little? I didn't mind paying what's about $20 CAD by the time it arrives the first time around for this plug, but I won't do it a second time. I think a new rubber end could be found to put on if the one on there won't soften up one way or another. Any ideas?

When I got my car all it had over the adjustment hole was a piece of duct tape that barely had any adhesive left. I made a plug with Sugru:

https://www.amazon.com/Sugru-Mouldable-Glue-White-Pack/dp/B008MIRQUE/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1508675597&sr=8-4&keywords=sugru

It's moldable rubber that cures into hard rubber over 24 hrs. I just made a short "bolt" with a tapered shaft and pressed it gently on the hole to form a seal. Now I have a perfectly fitting plug that I can remove and replace easily.

This stuff has a ton of applications. I've used it to cap vac lines, add length to the door switch plungers, fill small holes, etc.

Can you be specific? Switch them in what way?The pins in the factory connector. The outer lights run the low and high beam. I forget the colors of the wire but you'll see the black wire which is your ground to switch those two around or if you're not certain use a test light or a digital multimeter and just disconnect a pain and swap the terminals of the high beam in the low beam and you leave the ground where it's at and that's all you have to do.

It gets removed to fit in the LS. You can't physically install it without doing so. Once the motor is in, it gets bolted back into place with reinforcement plates which makes the rigidity quite a bit stiffer than the car is normally.

That's correct. The structural rigidity comes from the heavy aluminum bumper that bolts on to it, not that rear member, anyway. In addition, I will be installing reinforcement plates across the back to further increase rigidity beyond what stock was.

That's correct. The structural rigidity comes from the heavy aluminum bumper that bolts on to it, not that rear member, anyway. In addition, I will be installing reinforcement plates across the back to further increase rigidity beyond what stock was.Oh ok that makes since! Thanks for clarifying!

Yep, forgot to mention that. I used these. No cutting or modding at all

Your car looks soooo good with that new lighting system up front, as well as the LEDs everywhere else!

Does your headlight system use any less in current than the originals?

This coming winter my car lives in the garage and I'll be changing my lighting system to LEDs, now I know what headlight system I would like to install.

Do those headlights fit into the stock metal support frame? (don't know the correct name for those)

Sure adds a bit of class to your car! (Which is already stunning)

The foam backing the fascia is glued on to a very heavy and thick metal; I think it is aluminum. It might be steel? I can take a picture of it next time I am out in my garage if that would help.

Im sure my car is drawing less power with the change in lighting, plus 9 years ago i redid the fuse box and other elecrical grounds for better electrical flow and have a 140 amp alternator from DPI. The head lights fit perfect into the factory buckets and nothing was cut. The only real change I had to do was for the outer headlights that are a low beam Anaheim game I had to switch the two power wires around but leave the ground wire where it's at because the LEDs are reversed. I don't know why that is but that's how they are because I checked it with a test light first. It is very simple just to pluck out the pin and swap sides. I hope to see you posts with your car with the new update as well and you'll definitely benefit from the change and driving at night.

I can't remember when I took my bumper off when I was redoing everything for the engine 9 years ago. Holy hell has it been that long lol

These are the same changes I want to do to my car, I've already changed to a 140 amp alternator and cleaned up all the 'rear' grounds & added an extra ground to the frame.

I just received a kit of LEDs from a DeLorean vendor, part of my to-do list, to better the electrical all over the car by spring. Also I'll be changing out my fuse box from DMC too.

I don't know if I can match some of the photos of your car, but I'll find a unique place with an interesting background, we can't just photo anywhere as our car(s) deserve good pictures all the time! (as yours does)

I'll be in touch if I encounter any troubles, driving at night and seeing............priceless!! :wow:

[emoji16] My back grounds of my pics are right out in front of my house. I live out in West Virginia so there is alot of places out here for great pics. I got all my LED's from Superbrightled.com, the LED HVAC Panel from Dave McKeen and the electroluminescence from Adafruit.com.

When the snow flies, my car is parked for the season!Great and looking forward to it! I still got a few projects to do on mine for the winter also. Mainly get my front and rear fascias painted since they are the worst part of the car and everything else on the car is near perfect. Lol. Also a couple other little secret projects that I'm doing that I've been planning for close to a year now and I never winterize my car as I still drive it through the year and I only don't drive it when there's salt and snow on the road but even if it's still freezing out I still drive it and thank God I installed 2 way heated seats! Your winter project is incorrect. You will be temporarily moving to Rochester to do my LS swap for me. I expect it done in one week, done perfectly, and a hug at the end of it all.

I guess if i did it I would be anal and professionally hid the wires, make everything on the engine perfect and neat. A few custom touches and then a hug,...... with no pants on. Cheering each other while our genitals hang im delight! [emoji41]

Booster is still the same and the rotors came mounted on a spindle with the new hub along with the Wilwood calipers. Bolts directly up the car with no mods at all. The whole set up is from DPI along with the control arms and support bars which are adjustable also. I refurbed the upper control arms myself and bolted in new ball joints. The rear are new, custom and stock. Factory rebuilt calipers with stainless pistons, adjustable upper links and stainless trailing arms. 4 QA1 adjustable coil over with 16 postion dampeners https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170803/3511df7a7d2698e5b98bc8d55e413d41.jpg

Changed my oil. Now, that may not sound like a big deal, but it's not only my first time changing my D's oil but the first time I've ever changed my own oil in any car I've ever owned. I can fix anything you want in a house, but have never been a car guy until I bought my DeLorean a year ago. Anyway, it went well and I'm excited to be able to do it myself.

One interesting note, as I was under the car preparing to do the oil change, I noticed that the standard oil drain bolt (with the infamous square socket) had been replaced with a drain bolt with a 17mm hex head on it, so no need to buy the special socket.

Finally fixed the engine cover grilles. It was missing a piece when I bought it and 3 pieces were installed incorrectly. Feels good to do a simple quick fix for a change.

Pulled intake and pipes, cleaned the VOD, found the source of the oil leak in the main oil galley, TIG welded a plate over it, started researching engine swaps.

Went for the final drive of the season, replaced a bad accumulator, did an oil change for the first time in 3 years. Parked for the winter now.

I gotta drive it more. . .

What sort of engine swap possibilities are we talking about? PRV 3.0? VR6? LS?

I've been blown away by what Nicholas and Josh have done with their LS1 and LS4 swaps. Their documentation and blog updates have been a great read with so much detail in them. I've wanted to explore the possibility of adopting a Porsche Gear box. The "Worlds fastest Delorean" mentions he is using a Porsche 996 g96.01 6-speed, which is interesting and cheaper then the G50 boxes.

My brother and I were able to crank and build pressure with no more oil leak so I'll be continue the restore with the stock engine now, but my intentions is to swap eventually since I've always dreamed of a swapped Delorean :)

Ugly, hard to TIG weld the block since it was saturated in oil for years, but seems to stop the leak for now.
