This has been an ongoing problem for me since I put 3165 back on the road almost 2 years ago. The driver's side output shaft seal has constantly leaked. I had the larger drive flange installed as well as a new seal about 10,000 miles ago but from day one it wasn't right. it started sweating right from the start. In my opinion there is signifigant play in the output shaft off the transmission but several people have repeadetly told me this is normal and unrelated. However It's starting to leave small puddles in my garage. Instead of having this done again I'd like to just change the seal myself. But I'm not sure if I need special tools for this and I'm also unsure of exactly which part it is on the DMC website. I would also like to tighten the crown nut to alleviate some of the play in the final drive but everyone says this is a bad idea and I have thus far left it alone. So if anyone has any comments or suggestions on what's the best way to deal with ths I'd appreciate it. My trans has 54xxx miles on it and as far as I know is original and has never been opened.

If the transmission is not sounding as though it is coming apart I wouldn't touch that adjustment. Despite what others say adjusting it without having the bell housing off and measuring the tension is not a good idea.

What type flanges are you running? If they are pitted you are going to have issues. The factory seals had a felt strip that held moisture causing all types of issues. If the lip seals were installed incorrectly they will leak for sure. It sounds as though that is the over all problem.

Here are the parts you need to complete the seal installation:

You don't need any special tools to do the job. Just make sure the drain and fill plugs are good, and be gentle with the new sleeves and seals. A soft rubber mallet will come in handy.

If the flanges are pitted they should be sleeved or replaced.
There are a few specialty tools made to help remove and replace the flanges, but you can do the job with a simple straight punch and a 17mm socket or wrench for the axle bolts.

The flange that has the leak was replaced with a slightly larger one to hold tighter against the seal. But this didn't really work that well because it leaked from the get-go.

Is this a double lip seal like the heavy duty one Hervey is selling?
