Water Pump Leak at Thermotime Switch Port

When I installed a new water pump I noticed a leak at the larger fitting that the Thermotime Switch screws into. I wanted to know what kind of sealer to use, I was thinking of black RVT silicone. I originally used some Permatex #2 sealer, but that didn't seem to work. Originally, there was a brass washer used with the fitting. Is the washer necessary? I've looked at my buddy Ryan's water pump and I don't remember seeing the washer installed on his. I've included some pictures for reference.

I believe the "washer" you are talking about is not a washer but a seal,so the answer is yes, you need that seal.

+1. You want something that will compress.

In a "pinch" you could try an "O" ring of the appropriate size but you do need something to seal the surface, the threads themselves are not a sealing surface.

We now replace the red paper gasket as supplied with new pumps with a copper one for this exact reason.
