In all my other cars, I have always used Napa Gold oil filters. While researching which filter to use on the DeLorean, the cross reference list shows many different filters of the same brand that will fit it:

AC: PF-56, PF-60
Bosch: 5401, 72150
Champion: PH-228
Fram: PH2870A
NAPA: 1034, 1307, 1318, 1393 or 1516
Peugeot: 1109.45
ProMotive: PH195, PH252
Purolator: FC109-1 or PC134 or PER 17 or PER1
Renault: AW 261-2
Wilx: 51516
Mobile 1: M1-205
Fram: PH2870A
STP: S2870A

I also found this list on a different site:
Purflux LS410C (factory filter - this is the one that the vendors sell)
Napa 1342
AC PF2140
WIX 51307 (wider Volvo type)
Purolator L14670 (wider Volvo type)

Normally I would just buy a filter from DMCH, but I would prefer to change the oil today and I don't want to wait for one to be shipped to me. I apologize if this has been covered before, but which filter do you run? Is it odd that so many filters from the same brand will work, or is this fairly common? I know when I go to Napa for my other cars, there is only one filter listed that will fit them, but this list shows five that will work...

Also, any idea what filter DMCH sells? I don't see any branding on the picture online.

I remember from an old discussion that some of the filters are a larger diameter and will interfere with the sender unit beside the filter. When I first got my car I bought a 6 pack of Bosch filters from Special-T. Best to stock a spare for the next time.

Agreed. I will order the bulk pack next go-around. I just need to get by for this oil change and would like someone with experience to help me out with which filter to use this time.

You can delete the Purflux off the list as these are no longer available. You'll see one on Ebay from time to time but none of the suppliers sell them anymore. This was the preferred filter since 1981.

If you order one from Houston or PJ Grady's now, you'll get the Bosch however I'm not sure if it's the 5401 or 72150. I'll see if it's listed on the spare filter I have when I get home. I'm interested too because Wal-Mart has started carrying Bosch filters.

If this helps. The Bosch filters I use, pn- 0 451 103 033 are 3.1" dia. max at the bottom crimp, and 4.7" tall.

Box number on the Bosch filter is 72150

Done. I removed it from the list. As I'm searching via Google, I seem to be finding more and more filters that supposedly fit that are from the same brand. I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know which Bosch filter you have. Thank you.

Looks like Dave provided the Bosch filter # for us - 72150. I'll check Wal-Mart tonight and see if it's available.

Are you sure Kirk? I think Grady may still have a handful of Purflux. But at last check they were around $28. A piece! He may have sold them all by now.

I agree that the Bosch filter is probably about the best. I usually either pick them up from Grady or order a six pack from DMCH. They come with washers for the oil plug, are reasonably priced and even ground shipping only takes about 3-4 days from Texas to NY.

It is true that most of the other filters will hit the oil pres sending unit.

You're probably right Chris, I'm sure Rob, James, Tony, Dave, still have some remaining for the customers that don't mind spending $28 on an oil filter but if you order online, you'll get the Bosch.

I miss the days of going by Rob's once a month to pick up some parts, talking to Jeremy and seeing what Deloreans were in the shop.

Not all filters are created equal and just because they "fit" does not mean it is correct. Some filters have anti-drain back valves, bypass valves and other valving inside per the motor's requirements. James Espey cut some filters open a while back and some looked like they were filled with cheap junk, and these were all NEW filters! Perflux is the preferred filter but since they are no longer being produced whatever stock that is left is very pricey for the picky customers. Even Bosch is no longer what it once was, many Bosch parts are being produced in third world countries with poor quality control. In a pinch you can just change the oil and change the filter later. Or just postpone your oil change until you can get the right filter. Order 2 from your favorite vender so you have an extra for next time. I assume you have an adapter to remove the drain plug from the oil pan? If not you may want to order one of those too and a magnetic drain plug. When you do an oil change you should do a full service. This includes (but is not limited to) lubricating the front end, inspecting the undercarriage and C/V boots, checking ALL fluid levels, lubing the angle drive, checking the brake pads and E brake.

I found a Bosch 72150 filter at my local Oreilly's. This will do just fine. It's just such good weather today, I can't pass up this opportunity to get this oil change done and over with before the freezing weather returns tomorrow.

I went and picked up the oil at Walmart. While I was there, I checked to see which Bosch oil filters they had there. While they did have quite a few, there were none that I found that were listed in this thread. Oh well. The filter I got was less than $7 at Oreilly's, so it wasn't bad at all.

Off topic, but you peaked my interest. What do you mean by "pick-up" over there (Grady's shop). He used to be swamped with work, and now he has nothing to do?

Now, back on topic.....I use the Bosch 72150 on both my cars. It does have the proper anti-drain back valve and won't hit the stock oil sending unit near it. Plus I can pick them up locally at the Advance Auto that is right next to my office.

On topic - My Wal-Mart here in Nashville did not have the correct Bosch oil filter either. I'll just continue to order from Rob or DMC.

Off Topic - Rob Grady is one of the best Delorean mechanics in the world, Period! For those of us that have used his services know, it's a fact. I hope his business continues forever because he's a great asset to keeping our cars on the road. No one, and I mean no one can make a Delorean door close as perfectly as Rob. Best money I've ever spent. He worked on 15500 when it had about 5,500 miles on it and I drove the car straight through from Long Island to Nashville (900 Miles) with no issues at all. He's not cheap but for the major stuff, it's well worth it. Not sure if he'll continue on his own or become another Satellite location for DMC. Either way, I hope his business continues. Here's a picture of the last time I was there. Looks pretty busy to me.

If anyone is going to New York, make the 45 minute drive from JFK or LGA to PJ Grady's. If you have to, take the LIRR to Sayville and walk from the train station, you won't be disappointed.

Sorry, I think I misled you with my earlier post. I know Rob well and I have been in the community for a long time. I have been to his shop before. He worked his magic on #5000 about 10 years ago and it still purrs just as perfectly now as it did then (actually it has been there twice for work). That is why I was surprised to see that statement earlier made by Chris, guess I misunderstood. Damn......off topic again!

I know its off topic but I just had to follow up. Kirk is 100% right I have been doing business on and off with Rob since 1998. Deloreans aside Rob is one of the best mechanics, honest salesman and best businessman I have ever dealt with in the automotive industry hands down. Take it from me I've had over 15 years experience in the transportation industry dealing with all sorts of retailers and repair shops all over the tri state region and no one has ever given me as honest or professional service as Rob Grady.

Having said that I don't really feel comfortable commenting on the state of his business but with his decreased staff and workload, I think he may be in a transitional stage. What the outcome of that will be is anybodys guess. I personally look forward to doing business with him in the future and I hope to do so for years to come.

Seems like this gets posted every couple of months somewhere on here, so here it is again: Fram filters are widely reported to be *junk*

The extra buck spent or lead time to get the Bosch filters from the store or a vendor is money so, so, so well spent. Plus you support a vendor if you do so and most of them will give you crush washers and nifty windshield service interval stickers with DMC logos too. So there's some value-adds there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRRgw4B7R-I

And if you want one with out the gruff commentary and a little better look at the innards of the Fram... check this one out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6r8fJ7sdJR4

And some more comparisons

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsQ2LbHGSy0

Make your own call, honestly. But aesthetics shouldn't factor into an oil filter selection IMO.

As far as I'm concerned for something this important an extra buck is worth it if there's any doubt at all. My personal opinion is that when it comes to car parts, I will always get the Bosch one if there is one available.

I remember reading in a previous thread that due to the high oil pressure in the PRV there are specific requirments for which oil filters should be used. Someone will need to verify that my explanation is correct, but the way I understand it is:

Inside the filter there is an internal bypass that allows oil to flow around the filter element. The bypass is controlled by a spring loaded one way valve that opens when the pressure threshold is exceeded. The intention is that if the filter gets plugged there is still passage of oil around the filter to prevent oil pump/engine failure.

Standard filters (IE Fram, generic auto parts brand) will physically fit the connection on the engine but the bypass pressure is 30-40 psi. Since the PRV is up in the 70-80 psi range the bypass is continuously open so the filter doesn't actually do much filtering.

The BOSCH, purolator, etc. filters have higher spring pressure to keep the bypass closed so the filter can do its job.

This is important to keep in mind. I always use the German made Bosch oil filters. The ones you buy at the auto part store are US made Bosch filters. I believe the German Bosch filters are the better of the two. John has a good deal on his 6 pack of filters (works out to $5 each). I don't know anyone else who sells the German variety.

I see that Bosch is the new filter of choice in the DeLorean community. While I don't have any issues with Bosch per se, I've grown attached to the Purflux (which was always made in France) and find it difficult to substitute with something that was always questionable in the past.

So, in searching the net, I came across the 'Killer Filter.' Is anyone familiar with the Killer Filter? Here are the product features:

Proudly Manufactured in the USA
Replaces p/n LS410C
Highest Quality Materials and Medias Available
Guaranteed Efficiency
Each Filter is guaranteed to meet or surpass the original equipment manufacture specifications.

They sell them in packs of 4 on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Killer-Filter-Replacement-PURFLUX-LS410C/dp/B00AZSZ76O

With shipping, the total cost breaks down to $11.61 per filter.

Any thoughts?

I think most people will agree, especially the purists, that the Purflux is the filter of choice. But they have been NLA for so long that no one even considers them an option anymore.

Now, I have no experience at all with the filters you just linked. But I have to say that at $11.61 a filter, I would say you are definitely encroaching on snake-oil territory. I can't imagine any characteristic of an oil filter being worth that much, unless it really was a concours original one used for show purposes.

There's also no bypass PSI listed or if it even has an anti-back flow valve. There's more to a filter then just it's size!

Does anyone else use the Microguard? I just put one on but I think I'm going to ditch the rest I have and order up the Boschs. I saw a video on youtube where a guy cut one open and the reviews weren't glowing. Too cheap of insurance for your engine to not do it right.

Looks like Hervey currently only carries Bosch, Mahle, and Mann. I've personally only ever used the Purflux. Luckily, I still have about a dozen of those left from a previous bulk order. Given their unavailable, I'm not sure if I want to use them or keep / ration them.

Anyone ever use the Mann or Mahle offered by Hervey? It's $1.70 more per filter for either brand over the Bosch at Hervey's?

Probably doesn't matter very much - all will do the job sufficiently.

Sucks that Purflux discontinued our filter.

Just for the record - not really a purist/concours guy philosophically speaking. That's just the current condition of the car. I've never done a concours with it. But it is driven regularly every year (yes, with the 32 year old Goodyear NCT's - I really need to pick up an extra set of wheels and new tires so that I can preserve the NCT's). I was thinking about entering it in the DCS concours in Dayton next year, but unsure if it would even be worth it, as I'm sure that I'd be competing against trailer queens and thus wouldn't stand a change. BTW - Dayton would be the first DCS that I've ever attended.

Anyway, perhaps I'm reluctant to jump on the Bosch bandwagon because in the past, when most venders were pushing the Purflux, they always specifically questioned the quality of the Bosch. Ironic that Bosch is now the filter of choice for most venders! I know it's all psychological, and I'll probably end up using the Bosch at some point. Heck, I only put Bosch filters on my gas/petrol daily drivers / other cars.

Cool! It does sound like a good sales tactic, to take something with a well known brand and specifically say "those are CRAP next to....."

Or maybe back in the day Bosch was actually making crap filters. But I sorta doubt that.

I think the moral of the whole thread is to avoid filters that are obviously el-cheapos. Similarly, don't overspend to ridiculous excess. Change them at the recommended intervals. I bet everyone here can agree on those three things.

Just to flog this dead horse some more

I while ago I bought a Bosch 3421 filter at Autozone. I'm not sure where I got that number from, possibly a forum, possibly a guide at the store (for volvos maybe). Anyway, when I went to do the oil change, I noticed that the 3421 filter was longer and skinnier than the one that was on there (which was STP iirc). As my usual method of filter removal is somewhat destructive of the filter, I backed off, and ordered a filter from DMCH. They sent me a Bosch 3402. Notice the physical difference:

http://dmctalk.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=19562&d=1370440923

At my next change, I will try the 3421 on for size, just out of curiosity.

Interestingly, the Bosch Autoparts website lists both the 3402 (premium) and the 73137 (workshop) as suitable for our engine. Not quite sure what "workshop" means.

Interesting that this thread popped up again. I just ordered a 6 pack of filters from DMCMW and they should be arriving later this afternoon. Last time I ordered them they looked more like the tall/skinny 3421 as Jon was saying.

Of the different Bosch PN's floating around it would be nice to get some clarification on which is what and who ships what PN. So far from this thread and a few others I've gathered that:

72150 - No longer available - Replaced by 72150WS

72150WS - Looks to also be NLA

3421 - Bypass valve pressure listed at 11-18 psi (tall skinny filter)

3402 - Apparently shipped by DMCH per Dangermouse. Bypass valve pressure listed at 8-16 psi. (shorter wide filter)

5401 - Couldn't find details or specs on this filter, not sure if it is a valid PN anymore.

xxxx - DMCMW Filter different than DMCH. Not sure on the PN, but looks to be similar to 3421.

Autozone carries both 3402 and 3421 from Bosch. Both for same price ($6.99). I bought the 3402 one and when I tried to put it on, the oil pressure sensor was in the way.... originally there was a DMCH filter on it (skinny one). I swapped out for the 3421 and it fit fine. Of course how it fits and what it looks like on the outside doesn't say it will work like it's supposed to. After installing I ran it a bit with no issues... I plan on putting about 200 miles on it tomorrow so if it doesn't work I'll post again. Hopefully I won't have to post on this thread again!
