View Full Version : Unrealistic upgrades

"What if" time. What are some of the upgrades you would want for your DeLorean that most likely are NOT realistically going to happen?

My list:

1. Mid-engine
2. DOHC with variable valve timing and lift intelligence.

I would consider an engine swap or relocation un-realistic for me. A realistic upgrade that will most likey not happen?

Stage III...unless I come into enough $$ that I can drop 10k without thinking about it.

That's about it really, I pretty much have my car just the way I want it.

carbon fiber unibody (i.e., delete steel chassis)
antilock brakes
five lug wheel hubs

DOHC would be awesome, wonder if the tooling still exists for the limited number that were actually made.

Hmmm.....

Carbon Fibre Pontoon
Carbon Fibre Lourve
Kevlar "Y" Frame
Canbus electrical system
BMW V10 heart
Electronic Suspension (Lamborghini - adjustable height)
Motorised door hinges + auto closing

Ideally, reducing the weight of the Delorean by 200kgs would be awesome.

What is with all these people that want to change/modify a D. Where do they get off. Horrors.

Okay, I choose three-abreast seating, as it makes the other "unrealistic upgrade" possible.

I always wanted to make electrical sliding headlight covers for my car. I may still do this someday but never can find the time.

Some slammin hydraulics. 4 switches for 4 wheels, make the car dance.

Funny thing is that I asked this same question on Facebook, and the very first reply was this same thing.

I like the way you think...

- Suspension configuration that would allow at least a 275 40 zr17
- LSx conversion
- Larger rotors
- Power Steering

Being a Corvette guy, the LSx conversion makes me drool. I salute you, good sir!

I'm surprised no one has said real time travel capabilities. You said unrealistic ;)

I'd redesign the front with F1 style suspension and build a carbon fiber body. Actually, carbon fiber everything possible including the fuel tank. Then I'd drop an supercharged LS7 with an liquid intercooler and strong 6 speed transmission. I'd probably shrink the rear windows a bit and put larger air intakes to help it breathe and add a liquid intercooler to keep the stock lines of the D. Bigger brakes, 4 piston calipers, and forged 17/18 inch rims with the stock look. To top it off a Flowmaster exhaust to make her roar. I'd relocate as much to the front as possible in order to help with the weight distribution.

Push button closing doors.I was going to post that!
...along with "Everything Aloft".
I'd also like hide away headlights similar to those on a RS/SS...maybe even shorten things up a bit and pitch the original fascia to help blend the style (but not blunt).
And way out there...individual sun/moon roof doors, and autopilot!

But for now, I'd settle for 2" more headroom.

In theory, you could get a serpentine belt setup from the 3.0L version of the engine.

But where would you put the tensioner? ;)

You guys inspired me to write some new lyrics. All together now in your best singing voice:

On the twelfth day of Christmas I bought my DMC...

twelve stainless fuel lines,
eleven vacuum hoses,
ten pints of coolant,
nine 10-amp fuses,
eight relay sockets,
seven quarts of oil,
six platinum spark plugs,
five valve springs,
four sealed-beam bulbs,
three solenoids,
two rebuilt heads,
and a brand new battery!

Thought of one: I want my D to sound like the Countach in Cannonball Run... :)

My unrealistic wish list:

-Stainless Steel frame (unless I become a lawyer or trip over a random $13K in cash)
-Supercharger
-Flux Capacitor replica that I didn't try make myself but paid a lot for
-4 Door Sedan Conversion
-Stainless Steel child seat, with gull-wing arm rests
-a Tony Stark racing suit :D

Sparky does run like a top. It gives me the occasional problem and the fascias are warped and need paint, but Ye Olde Sparke is hardly the piece of junk everyone seems to think it is. I just have to fix the air conditioning and get the cruise control hooked up before Orlando. I will probably end up making numerous electrical upgrades in my spare time... because that is what I do with this car.

I seem to recall you having idle misfire issues; how did you end up fixing those?

I decided that it isn't a misfire and the engine simply will never idle smoothly. I've driven it several times since then without incident.

Instead of the 225 60 15s that are often used these days (apparently). Just easy to find, readily available Michelins or Pirellis that have all the latest technology and are available in the correct sizes. 235 60 15s

Farrar

Ah, I see now. Still, most of what you listed seems possible to me... especially if you do the frame and drivetrain work at the same time. All it takes is money and time. :)

Make the car sound like it should.
