I'm going to be taking the timing pointer plate off of my timing cover. Maybe I missed it in the workshop manual, but can someone please explain how I can line the pointer plate back up properly during re-assembly?

Thanks in advance!

The top of the engine underneath/behind the waterpump has two threaded plugs. One is for oil, the other is for engine time alignment. Dont remember which one is which though. I dont *think* you'll need to remove anything with your setup to get to it, but if anything it'll just be the intake (piece of cake, right? 8) ) After pulling the plug you stick a screwdriver down it and when on #1 TDC it will fall into a little notch in the crankshaft. Then align your plate accordingly.

I just wish I remember which one was it, I want to say it was the bigger hex socket one, but I can't with 100% certainty. The other one is an oil line.

Cool, thanks Jim. My water pump is already out of the way, so it will very much be cake :)

I'm pretty sure it's the plug that is further away from the timing cover (whichever size that is). Under the plug there are two little metal tabs that stick out, then you can put a 8mm (or whatever English size is closest) drill bit in between them, which will drop into place at exactly TDC.

So put a screw driver in and when it falls in that is TDC?

Where does the plate line up with the crank pully?

You would want to set the plate at "0" when the engine crank is at TDC,

Which notch is it on the pulley? How do I know which is 1 and 6?

Okay so I'm also talking to josh on this.

So at one of the notches you'll see a round hole and just a tad beyond that is a "flat head" type cut in the crank shaft. You want the flat head type notch. Then align the plate to the notch on the pulley at 0.

Correct?

When I removed mine for painting I took a scribe and traced the plate on the timing cover. When I put it back I used the scribe to help me make sure it was in the right place. Tracing it again after reinstallation (lightly this time to not scratch the paint) will verify.

I ended up figuring it out. It's tough because the groove is so close to the circular mark on the crank shaft I kept missing it.

I spent the day going back into the valley to be sure.
