Prep Before Using POR-15 in Valley of Dreath

I'm getting ready to use POR-15 in the valley of death. For those of you who used the POR-15 did you use their product "Prep and Ready" before using the POR-15?

Actually Glyptal is probably a better choice. It adheres well to rough, dirty casting surfaces and seals well. It is impervious to most automotive fluids and can take a lot of heat. You can get it at a place that rebuilds electric motors or you can buy it at Eastwood.

Actually I've already purchased a kit from POR-15 that has a "Prep & Ready" solution with it. I'm just wondering if anyone has used than in the VOD before they put in the POR. I wish I had known about Glyptal but I think the POR will work. Of course opinions vary.

Here's the alternative point of view. Personally I'm not a fan of painting in there. Not saying it can't be done, but it's not all that simple.


It's difficult-to-impossible to get it clean and dry enough for the paint to adhere well, and if it does not adhere perfectly it will lift and be worse than no paint at all as it will then trap moisture. Even the occasional dump of clutch fluid in there will weaken the paint. It's a tough environment.


I've seen them in here where the prep was not done correctly, where the paint is sloughed off in sheets just laying there trapping moisture.


My preference is to inspect the area often, looking for coolant leaks, and pull the intake every once in a while (depending on how much you drive it and the critter population in your garage) to clean the valley.


If you are goint to paint it, clean it perfectly and then do it again. Clean it with solvents and with soap and water.

I cleaned and cleaned again my VOD before I painted it, but I did not paint the deep recesses (the narrow ones in the middle that extend down a good inch or two) for the exact reason Dave pointed out.

On our VOD refurbishment service we install plugs and block off plates on the injectors, intake ports and spark plug holes. When then tape off the entire engine bay with plastic and blast the valley to prep the surface. Followed by a quick etching and then the application of the POR 15. You can then cure the POR with a heat gun carefully. I pulled one apart last week for it's yearly clean out. (Very necessary if you daily drive) and it looks great still. Don't forget to also top coat the POR 15 with an engine enamel as well for maximum protection.

So did I, mine had a lo of pitting. but I claned it and POR-15 it, and after a year, still looks good !
