Anyone use a K&N cone filter instead of a stock K&N filter?

HI all,

I was wondering if anyone is using a K&N cone filter instead of the stock filter?? Any differences in sound or anything?

I just replaced my stock K&N filter on my 1989 5.7L Trans AM. Put in a K&N cone filter. Car sounded a little more aggresive, a bit more burble in exhaust.

What are your experiences??

Ran K&N in my ram air formula, ended up ditching it because the oil screws with the MAF.

Ran one in a D, didnt notice anything, went back to paper.

I took out my air system and installed a spectra cone filter. Personally I love it. I had it on my last car and it was cool and made the engine sound mean. You do though if you install a CAI please protect it from the water when it rains. I didnt in my last car and went through a puddle and seized my engine. Had to do a whole small block re build. With a cone filter you get a better intake. DMC In cali has the adapter to put a cone filter on. Though I am not fully happy with their design. it is a really tight fit. especially when you start attatching the piping from the intake manifold to the cone filter.

I'm not a fan of the cone type setups I've seen in the DeLorean. Most route them straight into the engine bay just to suck in hot air. A few have done it properly and mounted it in the pontoon. I guess that makes more sense.

I don't think there are any true benefits to this set-up personally. Our cars do not ingest a large enough amount of air where something like this will help.

I really feel there is a limited benefit other then the fact that the filter is constructed better. You will not feel a gain what so ever.

The single best cost vs. reward upgrade on a Delorean is a exhaust system hands down.

There is little benefit gained by going to the K & N. For the expense you could change the stock filter more often but since most Deloreans are not used all that much it will take a long time for the filter to get dirty enough to have to be replaced. All too often I see shops throw away the cleanable, expensive K & N and stick in a new, stock filter. Unless you give special instructions (and the shop actually follows them) it is VERY rare for any shop to spend time cleaning a K & N and reusing it. As restrictive as the intake is in a Delorean it is large enough that it isn't that big a problem. As Josh points out you get the "biggest bang for the buck" spending money modifying the exhaust side.

It would appear from other's experience the order would be:

Improve exhaust system
Modify cams
Improve intake
Add supercharging or turbocharging
Add EFI
Upgrade transmission, suspension, brakes
Replace drivetrain (doing this one loses most of the previous money spent)
