Just saw an commercial for the next episode of American Pickers on Monday 2/20 9:00 PM "When Horses Fly". They show a Delorean. This could be fun watching they showed a bid of 11,000 and the owner said 15,000.

Here's a couple of quotes from the commercial
Where Mike and Frank they don't need roads
Bam! there's a delorean

There was no other information online that I could find.

Holy crap, I have actually been waiting for this to happen. That show is really cool and I knew sooner or later they'd turn up a D. I can't wait.

I think you mean sooner or later the writers would script in a Delorean for them to find.

Well that's a given, of course. But hey, it's TV. :) Gotta keep it fresh somehow. They can only buy so many rusty bike frames and oil cans before people lose interest.

That'll go great with their $50 (or was it $60) valued sales brochure.

So they could either convince the world that the DeLorean is extremely valuable or that it's a pile of garbage. Wonder how they'll determine a price. They always act like they're experts on everything. Think one of them will all of a sudden be a Delorean expert?

Lenny
02-14-2012, 06:42 PM
I hope they add realism to the prices. On the commercial the owner said 15K and they said 11K I'd like for the Owner to start at 25K and the car not be that good and they tell him he is overpriced. That way people who have these cars and think they are worth a fortune might see the light.

Don't they have "experts" that you see them call once it a while? It would be interesting if they call me/James/Stephen etc and ask what a mouse-eaten barn find car is worth. .. .

(hint - it's not $11,000 OR $15,000)

That would be pretty cool if they talked to an actual DeLorean vendor.

Chances are they'll call, "this guy I know who owns a mechanic shop," kind of like Pawn Stars did. If its anything like the Pawn Stars episode with the DeLorean, they'll probably just REALLY try to low ball the guy.

When I saw the phrase "American Pickers," I thought someone had found a DeLorean at a bluegrass music festival and got excited.

What a letdown. :P

What do you guys think? Genuine expression of interest or "Dave S - MASTER OF FORESHADOWING" :)

After all, MW would probably be the closest shop to anything the pickers might find... just sayin... :)

Thier shop is in my home town, I took my car down to the LeClair car show and they didn't even come down to see the cars. This is when they found the dealer book.

I would guess they would call a DMC store being there is only 1 person in the QCA that drives and shows a Delorean around town and it's me! I didnt get a call :-)

The show was probably taped a while ago. They most likely called an independent auto appraiser if any. The show is scripted and written like most reality shows. This is not Antique Roadshow. This is for pure entertainment. The best we can hope for is a good and honest assessment and some positive publicity. You always have to wonder if they "salt" the places they look before filming so they can "find" things. As the show gets older it gets harder and harder to keep it interesting. Most reality shows have a cheap, short life. It does have a large audience so good publicity can only be a good thing. Even if they did not contact a Delorean vender, after airing of this kind, they will notice an "uptick" in interest and calls about Deloreans. James once said every time the History channel airs 80's Tech they get a burst of calls from people rediscovering Deloreans.

"Burning up the back roads of South Dakota, Mike and Frank get off to a great start in Jim's spectacular man-cave. But when he slams on the brakes, they switch gears to score a heavenly sign. Freestyling in Iowa, the guys take a chance at an old airport turned auto body shop where a retro car takes them back to the future. Packed with roadside relics, Norm's property features a jaw-dropping collection of vintage pedal cars but the guys soon discover he drives a hard bargain."

Yeah, based on that description and having seen a lot of this show before, here is how I see it going down:

- Pull up on the guy's property, chat for a minute, find out he has a garage full of stuff
- Walk in, look around briefly, see the DeLorean. Cut scene to Mike making BTTF jokes. Back to the live action, more BTTF jokes. How much do you want? I'm thinkin' 30% less. Too bad we can't make a deal. I'd really love to drive this thing back in time (or other final BTTF jibe)
- Move on to rusty old pedal cars and fawn over them for the remaining 6 minutes before commercial

Guys,

I'm not a regular poster here, and tend to lurk, but I decided to post. (Dave S knows me and my DMC ( #5668 ) too well, a car he and Josh in Canton helped me find a few years ago.)

Not specifically related to the DMC that the "American Pickers" guys find, but I was introduced to picker Mike Wolfe last year at the Woodward Dream Cruise. He was working on a video for Chevrolet's 100th anniversary.

I'd driven my 2003 Chevy SSR up to the Chevy display area with some guys from SSRFanatic.com. My SSR is one of the two SSRs Chevy made to pace the 2003 Indianapolis 500. (GM owns the other.) Chevy had their pace SSR on display, so we talked some of the Chevy folks into letting us photograph the two SSRs together.

Mike Wolfe saw us set it up, so he asked if he could interview us for the Chevy video. (Part of the interview can be seen on YouTube, if you search "Chevrolet Mike Wolfe Woodward" HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBndW3yyv5E).)

He couldn't have been a nicer guy (I'd always figured from watching "Pickers" he was probably a bit of jerk), and we talked for some time about the show, his family and the new shop they were opening in Nashville.

I asked him if the "Pickers" fame made it harder for them to pick, with more folks holding out for stupid money, and he said that's pretty much what's happening (making it harder to put shows together).

Not sure that very much of the show is contrived. They shoot a lot of video they don't/can't use.

BTW, I had a blast at Woodward (my first), and would recommend it to anyone. It would be great to see a short parade of DeLoreans cruise Woodward this year.

Tom,

Did you see the Woodward delorean parade last year. We had 7-8 in a line.

Rich W
02-20-2012, 12:57 PM
Hi Tom,

As Dennis mentioned, we had a group of "8 Parade DeLoreans" out on Woodward,
with a total of about 16 DeLoreans on display at the Mercedes Benz Dealership in
Bloomfield Hills (with 6 of the DeLoreans parked right on Woodward Ave).

The DeLorean Motor City club has been attending the event for at least a decade
and other nearby DeLorean clubs, including the DeLorean Midwest Coonection, the
Ohio DeLorean club and the Mid-States DeLorean club have all attended recently.

I have been coordinating with the Bloomfield Hills folks already this year, to acquire
more spaces for our DeLoreans and I have been in contact with Jason Sharke about
having some of the DeLoreans from the Indiana DeLorean club attend this year.

See you all in mid-August at Woodward !!

Later,
Rich W.

Holy tortion bar adjustment, Batman!

LOL, I noticed the same thing :) If the torsion bar was that tight for the last 8 years, its a good bet the roof has started to separate. Also looked like brand new injector lines on it. They were off on the aquittal date, it was 1984. And of course my blood boiled when the owner said you could buy a brand new 2012 model.

I cringed when they asked if he had any gas for it.

Surprised to see that the doors stood at full height with no bending of the ball studs! I'm keenly tuned into that flaw now since I discovered it on my own.

I agree. Pretty positive. The owner said the engine was Peugot. Well he's 1/3 correct. They Had decent B-stock footage including a few seconds from the DMCH parking lot. I liked the fact they didn't mention anything about the cocaine stuff Other than the foot note saying he was acquitted of drug trafficking in 82.

I like the owners statement "it run if you put a little gas in the top of the engine". yeah for about 3 seconds.

The door seemed to fly up when he opened it, but when went too push it back in the garage you could see the door was sagging 1/2 open.

I liked the segment. I thought they did a good job. I may go down to Texas and buy a brand new 2012 Delorean:hysterical:

I'd like to see if any of the DMC offices have received any calls or emails today to see if the segment pushed any interest.

The good news is the more people that want our cars the more our cars are worth.

The bad news is the more people that want our cars the more expensive it is to buy parts and maintain them

At the end of the clip with the DeLorean being pushed into the garage you can see the door begin to rise again. During this segment, I believe the owner of the car was just holding the door down whilst steering the car into the garage to prevent it from hitting the lower hanging front of his garage.

Just watched it. Cool little segment. The body damage would have kept me away, I'm sure they were really not aware of the cost involved in fixing it up.

Can't stand to see these cars just hiding in garages, they are cars, and mobile pieces of art for that matter, and they should be driven. That's why I drive mine daily. :headbang:

David T

The segment was generally positive and I am sure will generate a burst of interest everytime it airs. As always there will be some minor points of misinformation but Mike showed genuine enthusiasm for the car. I agree because of it being a non-runner for many years and the body damage it is only worth $5-8K depending on how eager any prospective buyer is. It appeared to be an early '81. I also noticed the "custom" gearshift knob. Did anyone see all of the dust and dirt on the car? At least he is keeping it out of the weather and it rolled. I have seen some that wouldn't roll, let alone start. If they did find some gas they would have found out the battery was dead (or not even in the car!). And then there is the usual hunt for a key! This poor guy is going to be flooded with requests for the car, maybe he will get lucky and some idiot will give him $15K for this "barn find".

Reviving an old thread so as no to start a new one.

Last night (probably months ago but aired last night) Mike Wolfe bought a DeLorean for 15K from an estate in NJ. Add him to the "famous people who own a DeLorean list" at least for a while until he fixes is up and sells it.

The show was pretty good but had the typical staged feeling to it. There were actually two DeLoreans featured - one, a non-runner which they did purchase, and another recently-roaded car that the seller wouldn’t part with. Both were grey 5 speeds with flat logo hoods and fixed pull straps. Anyone have any intel on the VINs?

There was some unsubstantiated claim that the original owner had a connection to John DeLorean, who was living only a few miles from the property featured on the show during the heyday of the company. That was probably BS.

Both cars were pretty darn rough. 15k was exceedingly high for the condition (at a glance) they got the car they did in. But it had very low miles, only about 3k. It is going to need major restoration, and I suspect the Pickers will have that done and the completed vehicle featured on the show again. I’d keep an eye on PJ Grady for this one as he’s very close to where the cars were found.

Overall I thought it was an enjoyable episode. For me, the best part was seeing the genuine excitement Mike and Danielle had about the DeLoreans. Of course the show is scripted and overly produced – that's to be expected. The kind of excitement Mike and Danielle showed can't be faked.

Did anybody notice that Mike and Danielle seemed like they were a couple? I've never noticed that before on the show.

David T

There was a documentary that showed just how much staging there is! They try to make it look like they "stumble" onto these places but in reality there is a whole advance team that makes it look that way. I don't think they "salt" the finds like they do on other shows like the one where they auction the contents of storage bins (Storage Wars). But they obviously "pre-find" things of interest. At least it keeps Deloreans in the public eye and was generally favorable publicity. As for the "story", you hear them whenever you buy an old car. Hard to believe them but sometimes some of it may have a grain of truth. Don't count on PJ Grady getting the car. Most of the time they drag their stuff back to their store or nearby to have it fixed up. On one episode they found a dealer sign. It went from NJ to their store and back to NJ again! If you were at the DMA Spring Event you saw it!
