Coolant Level - Newb Question

In the DeLorean, how much should the expansion tank be filled when the engine is cold? What type of coolant is most recommended? Suggestions for any good pre-mixed solutions (50:50 water:antifreeze w/aluminum inhibitor).

Needs to be filled at least above the lower hose towards the back of the compartment, or you'll suck in air. Mine is normally just below the filler neck - it will bleed off excess from the neck if you overfill.

I don't use anything special, just Kragen/O'Reilly brand premix. Others may feel differently but you don't normally see debates on coolant like you do on oil. Don't even ask that question :)

The tank level kind of regulates itself since the cap is spring loaded. Assuming there is no air in the system and you have no leaks, when you fill the tank close to full, the next time the engine comes to temp, it will dump off the excess coolant through the hose connected at the neck of the bottle, due to the expansion from the heat. From there it will always be at the proper level. (though you should still check it periodically)

It is called the Header tank. If you still have the plastic one you should replace it with a metal one. When cold, on level ground, it should be about 1/3 filled. Use any good, nationally branded, permanent type anti-freeze like Prestone. You can use pre-mixed or buy full strength and mix it yourself 50/50 with soft water. Takes about 4 gallons, so you need 2 gallons of full strength or 4 gallons of pre-mix. Be sure to purge all of the air out of the radiator and the water pump.
