View Full Version : Suspension Need help figuring out what size shim I need for rear toe

My passenger side rear toe is 0.25 degrees, while the driver side rear toe is .43 degrees. Now according to this service bulletin (http://www.dmcnews.com/bulletins/ST-34-1.82.pdf) in the middle of the page it says "NOTE: 1 shim = 1.1 degrees (1/16 inch)".
So does that mean, after a little extrapolating, that I need to find a 0.010 inch hardened shim and sandwich it between two oem shims to get as close to perfect as I can? Will that work or will it still fall out since it won't be a factory shim?

As you probably have already noticed, the rear toe-in has to be .12 inch (3mm).
That's .06 inch (1,5mm) per wheel, alike the front wheel toe-in.
Somewhere I had information about the degrees, but can't find that info.
Perhaps others can provide such conversion info.
Should I find it again, I'll post it here.

That is correct, and the Hunter alignment rack I'm using already has DeLorean in it's built in list of cars surprisingly, and I cross referenced them and they match the numbers in the workshop manual. Front and rear toe comes out to 0.24 degrees toe-in for each wheel (positive toe), so I just need to get my rear driver wheel into spec since its at .43 degrees. I can't use a stock shim because the TSB says a stock shim will affect the toe by 1.1 degrees.
I'm just wondering if it's safe to use a non-oem shim sandwiched between two oem shims to fix that last .19 degrees needed to put the rear left wheel into spec, and if my math for a .010 inch thick shim will correct it.

You can use your math to get close but when you tighten the bolt it tends to squeeze things so you always have to add a smidge. All specs like this have a range knowing that you will not get exactly the value required. As important as the individual toe of each wheel is, I would try to get it equal side-to-side. After you get it write the # and sizes of the shims in marker on the frame.
