I also found this same symbol on the manhole covers in England when I visited the island in 1998. I have a picture of it at home Ill see if I can find it.

I think you know the answer Simon.

It is the logo for British Standards (actually better known as the Kitemark), the organization that compiled safety and quality standards for a variety of products - BS 857 in this case being the standard for "safety glass in land transport".

Thanks Dermot, thought maybe something to do with Bristish standards, but being an international car, it could have been anything.
