I need new wipers and the Houston set seems to be a screamin deal at only 10 bucks for both. Plus they appear (at least in the pic - http://store.delorean.com/p-10218-wiper-blade-kit.aspx) to be a fairly unusual shape. I have some off-brand ones on the car now and they don't really contact the windshield that well, so I thought perhaps it could be down to that curve.
But, the Houston ones are 30 year old NOS rubber. Are these really more of a concours item or are they actually usable? What are you guys using on your cars?

On the one hand, wiper blade technology has changed a lot over the years - but at a higher price. On the other hand, we've made it so the price of the NOS wiper blades can't be matched anywhere - plus they "look" right, and the rubber on them is fine as they have never been exposed to the sun - they even still have the "mold release" stuff on them to help them pop out of mold from 30 years ago. They also come with the right adapters to fit the wiper arms.

Right on, thanks James! That's a perfect answer. Plus at 10 bucks, who can argue? I'll put these on my next order.

Ive got them. I don't like them very much.
Having said that I avoid driving my car in the rain because I hate getting it dirty. When I do have to drive in the rain the wipers take a few minutes to 'warm up' and clear the windscreen properly on the down stroke. Don't know why.
The other thing I've noticed Is that I almost don't even need wipers. Even in he worst down pour I can see out the windshield with absolute clarity! It must be the angle it's on. The only time I can't see is when I pass under an overhead street lamp.
But as James said they look good and fit well.

I had the *exact* same problem on a car here last year. It did it with the Anco blades that were on it and the NOS blades I put on it. Finally I cleaned the windshield with a razor blade scraper and 0000 steel wool. The NOS ones (and the old Anco ones) both worked much better after that.

For what it's worth you can get a new set of Bosch wipers for about $15 at Walmart and you don't even have to pay shipping. They even have our cars listed in their wiper book/computer.

+1. Bosch Icon or Trico Neoforms > everything else. Advance or Auto Zone typically run a special on Trico blades, something like $10 off if you buy 2. They end up being around $10 a piece. Fantastic blades, it's like running a squeegee over the windshield every time it wipes. I guess the NOS ones are good if you're trying to win a concours competition.

I think the point is that some Deloreans never get wet, and for those people who may be sticklers for accuracy, the OE wiper blades fit the bill.

I have more of a problem seeing out the side windows when it rains. I think because they're less vertical than typical the water drops stay on. Can't roll down the windows to fix that either. :tongue2:
Maybe Rain-X will help them clear faster.

Without wishing to derail the thread, would cleaning the windshield with 0000 steel wool stop the wipers from skipping, mine are horrible, they just jump across the windshield, and make alot of noise, i have tried different brands of blades, but no difference.
Thanks

9 times out of 10 it is contaminants on the windshield that cause the wipers to skip, but I wouldn't use anything abrasive on it, even a clean razor blade. Try using a clay bar. This is the same clay bar used for paint and they are available at any auto parts store, I think Walmart even carries them now in the car care section. Don't use the spray wax lubricant that usually comes with it, just clean soapy water. After you have finished and dried the glass, go over it with some vinegar.

Another cause of blade skipping is bent wiper arms. The blade must be perpendicular to the windshield. If the arm is twisted, the blade tip is pushing against the glass and not wiping it instead. You have to be careful when twisting the arm back as you don't want to damage anything. But you may have to resort to this if cleaning the glass doesn't fix it.
As for the NOS blades, I got a set back when they were offering a free set of blades with minimum purchase. They are OK and I was surprised that they actually worked as well as they did considering their age. However, I'll go back to my previous set of silicone blades soon. They should last for a very long time.

Maybe Rain-X will help them clear faster.
Rain-X for the front windshield is the answer. I have STOCK wiper blades that were installed way back in 2003. With the extreme slope of our windshield and using Rain-X I hardly use the wipers. I drive the snot out of my car and I drive in the rain all the time. These wiper blades have over 103,000 miles on them.
Get the $10 blades from DMCH and use Rain-X. That's my recommendation.

Not a bad suggestion. I probably will do exactly that.

I keep RainX on my windshield and love it as well but you still need reliable windshield wipers.
RainX does not magically remove bird crap or live chickens from windshields. For that you need a good set of windshield wipers.
Anyone who would depend on a 30 year old set of wipers is just plain crazy in my opinion.

I'm afraid I fall into the 'doesn't drive the D in the rain unless caught out' category... Besides at $10 for the set they're worth a try at least. Regular blades worth a crap are $10 apiece.

Amazingly birds still crap and chickens still fall from trees on nice days. You need dependable windshield wipers even on nice days.
A set of new Bosch wipers are only $15 at Walmart. That is a much better bargain than $10 plus the expense to ship the ridiculous dimensions of a set of windshield wipers.

Do you happen to have the Bosch part number? I need to get new wiper blades but I don't shop at Wal-Mart.

I've been using the DMCH blades for years they work great IMO. I bought multiple sets at the time and just recently put a fresh set on. FYI blade skipping happens because the blades have dry set in the down sweep position all blades will do this when parked in a loaded position. This is why your supposed to change them every 6 months. The design of the rubber strip has remained unchanged for decades. It's only the backing structure that has been changed and hyped over the years. Premium blades still use the same wiper strip as the cheap refills. Don't by into the hype of premium blades. They go bad just as fast as the cheap ones.

So just out of curiosity, how do you remove the Bosch blades and install the NOS blades?
Nevermind, just figured it out.

To answer my own thread, at least partially - I did get the NOS wipers from Dave at MW, and James is spot on - they are clean and perfect, the rubber is smooth and supple and still has that white haze on it from manufacturing. I have no doubt that they'll work perfectly but I haven't installed them yet. So I'll update again with some pictures once I do!

My mantra for any car is that there're two items that come unde the heading of "you get what you pay for": Tyres and windscreen wipers.
I have been buying and fitting Bosch spoiler blades to DeLoreans for years. The spoiler pushes the blade down onto the glass and prevents skipping. The clip that comes with them fits the DeLorean wiper arm just fine.

I seem to be having the opposite experience to some with my NOS blades. I may have just gotten a bad pair, but they're not very good at all. First thing I noticed was that the blade itself had lots of pitting and nicks straight out of the sealed NOS bag. After installing them, the areas with the pits leave streaks on the windshield.
Sorry, despite the price I can't and won't recommend the NOS blades. I am super disappointed in DMCH's QC on these. The Bosch blades I had on there worked quite well until they wore out, and unless you're doing Concours, no standard wiper blade is going to look different enough from the stock blades for anyone to give even the slightest shit.
The Bosch blades are good. Stick with those.

I got a pair of wiper blades that I think were the NOS ones; whatever they were giving out with purchases at DCS '09 and shortly thereafter, I had to have my windshield redone. The wiper blade connector/adapter broke and the arm scraped across the windshield until I was able to turn off the wipers.
My advice; buy a decent set and don't skimp on the blades. It's a lot cheaper than having a windshield resurfaced.

I'm still trying to figure out why someone would take the time to order a set of wipers when an exact fit Bosch wiper is available at walmart for $8. Its even in their book and computer.

Not everyone shops at Wal-Mart (some people actually hate it) and most other places don't have the DeLorean in their computer.

I used to hate Walmart too but now I'm drinking the KoolAid I guess.
The same book and cheap computer can be found at places like Kmart and costco.

Most people would not Purchase NOS blades as a stand-a-lone order. Putting a couple pair in a larger order to have some on hand is more likely and won't have any effect on the shipping weight to speak of.

Ordering a set of wiper blades will have a huge effect on the dimensions of what would otherwise be a small package for something like a starter or alternator.

Since most of my orders are in larger boxes to begin with. It would not be significant if any change for me. Personally, I wouldn't care if it did. Of coarse it will be awhile before I have Blades shipped to me, since I'll be getting a New Windshield at DMCMW in week and I'll pick up extra blades then.
I suppose we could debate this for a while but I'm not going too.

Steve posted some photos in post #30, http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?3300-Anyone-tried-the-DMCH-NOS-wiper-blades&p=50699&viewfull=1#post50699
Looks like it's just any old 20" blades for both sides.
