Auto Trans leak

The pipe that goes to the trans cooler part #101793 is leaking where the rubber and the pipe meet. I tried replacing the clamp and it helped, but still leaks. DMC shows it as all one piece. Is it possible to just replace the rubber part? The similar part #108493 is also wet all around, so I guess I need to fix/replace both.

I had the same problem on my previous D.
Due to the temperatures of the trans fluid the rubber gets hard and starts weeping.

The only way to get rid of leaks there is replace the entire unit (rubber and pipes are one).
The tranny didn't leak at that point afterwards.

When replacing the unit you may get surprised by the nuts that also turn the pipes.
I had to twist them pipe to get all off. Fortunately I only had to do this once.

You want to replace both hoses while you're in there. Getting those metal hose ends removed and reinstalled was one of the most difficult jobs I've done with the car. Theres not much room for wrenches in there, and not much visibility. I'm not sure if you can replace just the rubber, and be able to work in such a tight spot, but it's worth a try!

A few years ago, I bought a auto trans hose kit from Rob Grady for 29.95. Just the hoses and clamps. If you order from Rob, maybe also order his auto trans cooler kit.

A problem getting more and more common, the hoses are getting too old and the rubber is no good anymore. They are an assembly, the hose and the metal pipes. If you can get it apart without mangling the fittings and the pipes a local shop can make up new hoses but the best option is to order both assemblies from your favorite D vender. That way you can put it right back together. Make sure you check the fluid levels after you replace the hoses. You have to really tighten the fittings to make sure they do not leak. When tightening make sure you do not put stress on the hoses, the metal pipes should point in the right direction so the hoses are not bent or stretched.

Thanks for the info! The reason I was asking about replacing the rubber only is that the parts sold by DMC are New Old Stock, so it's 30 year old rubber... Does anyone make new parts? (#101793, #108493)

I just called Grady and the parts they sell are also NOS.
I would rather have fresh rubber, but lacking that, does the NOS rubber still look good? (I don't mean the appearance of it :-) )

Thats wierd - Grady used to sell a kit that was two hoses with clamps, and you had to use the old ends over. The only problem with that is that sometimes you have to destroy the old ends getting them off the car, and access is bad enough that you typically can't cut the old hoses off.

The NOS one work fine. Although the rubber is 30 years old it has not been immersed in oil and heat cycled a bunch of times, unlike the ones on the car.

I can understand your reluctance to use a "new" 30 year old part. Any good hose shop should be able to make up a set of hoses, you do not really have to reuse the metal pipes. Just make sure the hoses get nowhere close to any exhaust pipe and they do not get kinked or twisted when you tighten them up. I would wash and blow them out several times to make SURE you do not have any dirt in them that could get into the transmission.

I've installed four of these NOS hoses in the past 5 years without any issues. No leaks, no cracking and the rubber looks great on them.
