Baffle is stuck at the bottom of the tank…suggestions for replacing it or removing it

On my project car, the baffle is bolted down like it's supposed to be. I borrowed the pickup hose for my other car, and have been trying to put the hose back in without removing the baffle, but that's quite difficult.

What are my options? The nut turns, but doesn't back off at all. Should I….

1) Fab a new baffle (tuna can? How is this done?)
2) Find some other way to remove the nut and pull the baffle/clips out, to make this easier
3) Something else

I'd like to get this car running again!

First you have to eat the tuna. I would have done this but Bill ate the tuna and shipped me an empty can with small holes drilled in it.

Try to put Box end wrench on it and see if the stud is turning. Btw what condition the nut /stud in (clean or rusted)

The stud doesn't appear to be turning. I recall that, when I assembled it, I was trying to tighten it properly, and it just started slipping before getting tight.

I'll probably just try to assemble it in the tank tomorrow, and if that doesn't work, I guess I'm eating some tuna…

I don't know how the stud would turn. I had to reset my stud in the plastic on my tank when it came lose and my baffle started floating in the tank. It has a circular/holed base that's melted into the bottom of the tank. It sounds like it might be stripped. Yuck!

You either have stripped the the threads in the nut or Stud or combination of both.

I would not give up quite yet. I know its tight working through the opening. Try to get something under the large area washer like a small L-shaped nail puller or anything you can think of to apply upward force on the Nut as you turn it. You might still be able to work it up off the stud and assess the situation from there. Btw, you can remove the the Sending unit for more visual or working access.

Try the suggestions. If you still can't get the nut off you could try ripping the stud out from the bottom of the tank. Once you get everything out and apart you can remelt the stud (or a new one) back in. My guess is the nut is rotten and stripped and rotating on the stud but not threading off. Some "persuasion" may be what it needs. Like using a screwdriver to pry it apart while rotating the nut.

Don't try cutting it out with a dremel tool.
