View Full Version : Electrical Fan Fail Relay?

As I was messing with my transmission yesterday, I had gone into the fuse compartment to pull fuse 13. Well I decided to check all fuses while I was in there. Two of them were pretty tight so I tried picking them up a little higher. Turns out I unplugged some fuses wires that go where a relay should go. I looked it up and it seems to be the fan fail relay. Should a relay go there? If not how do I connect the wires the way they were, or should go?

Thanks. Should a relay go in there at all or should I leave it this way? Is this causing my fans to always be on?

Keep your jumper wire modification until you decide to purchase a "Grey box" from Grady or can find a fanzilla. I think Dave at DMCMW sold a quality unit too but their website has changed so Im not sure anymore.

Oh yes, I didnt realize his unit was done. Bitsy makes some good stuff too.

For prices you want to go right to him. I'd hate to write a number on here and have it be wrong or give him any hassle if he wants to change it in the future. But basically it replicates the stock functionality using microprocessors and not parts so incredibly failure prone that the factory advocated replacing them with a short length of wire instead.

It is a small blue box that fits in the socket. Has two micro fuses on it, one for each fan. This allows the fans to be individually fused (very good thing) and also provides visual feedback if one or both fans fail by flashing the FAN FAIL light on your dashboard. One flash for one fan, two flashes for two. Actually in that regard it's better than original, I believe the original module just lit the light solid if there was any problem.

and it is recommended to install his Solid State Fan Relay. I don't thinks required though. It would go in place of your Black relay (next to the Blue socket).

I highly recommend DM-eng Products. (bullet proof)

For price comparison:

Fanzilla's were about $200 (Basic function was to stagger the fans cycles on and off and made the Fan Fail light work.) NO longer made but used ones are available from time to time.

Joe Cool's (similar to Fanzilla) were about $175. also No longer made.

PM me to purchase products. The fan relay and fan fail units make up my "fan controller" but you don't need to use both.

My fan relay delays turning the fans on for one second so the load of the AC compressor and AC clutch have time for the idle ECU to compensate. Then the fans will stay on for a minimum of 20 seconds. That eliminates the fans cycling on and off if your AC is cycling.

Yes, works with any vendors fans.
