Hi all!
I'm trying to ship an engine and transmission for the lemons racer (a 49 studebaker). The engine and transmission are free, but they're in El Paso, Tx.
Does anyone have experience or recommendations for shipping something like that? Or some sort of a hook up with a shipping company?
It will be going from zip 79821 to 30310, weighs around 600 pounds, and is roughly this size:
The overall dimensions are: L 56"x W 24"x H 36" If you want to split the engine and trans the engine is: L 36"x W 24"x H 36" (with the carb and air cleaner mounted). If we take the carb and air filter off it takes off 12". The trans by itself is L 36"x W 12"x H 12".
Options, thoughts, etc?

It'll need to be securely mounted to a pallet to get you the most options, or even crated.
+1 on pallet(s).
Drain the oil(s) and flag them as having it done.
If you can have it shiped to someone local with a "fork-lift and dock", or similar, you can save a wad...

He has no problem getting it on a pallet and even carrying it to a terminal. I just need to find a good company to carry it for a reasonable price.

When i worked for the Porsche yard a few years back we would ship engines and transmissions daily. They need to be pelleted and/or boxed securely. At the time we paid 60-90 for a transmission and 150-250 for an engine depending on weight. We shipped either Southeastern Freight or FedEx freight and they would come to us but we'd have to load it. in 2005 I had a PRV shipped from Texas to Gainesville via Southeastern Freight for less than $150, I had to go to the freight yard with an engine hoist to load the pallet into my truck.

I had an LS1 shipped a few years ago with FedEx and had to go to the dock to pick it up. It was pretty well crated and packed, so it arrived in one piece.

I called SouthEastern and got a quote of ~$450. Ouch!
If I can't get this shipped below 200, it's probably not worth shipping.
It'll be on a pallet, 56 x 24 x 36", and ~600 pounds. I think the weight is what kills it.

Well Gas prices have gone up a ton since I was in the business. I dont think we ever paid $450 to ship anything of course those Porsche engines were lighter. I seriously doubt you'll get it shipped below 200.

I'm hoping to find a F.O.A.F type discount!
So far, the best rate we've got is $260, which may be the best I can find.

I love that show (shipping wars). BTW, if you are talking about Jarrett he is a friend of mine. But they did kinda make him look bad at times on the show. It's just TV, but entertaining regardless.
