State by State DeLorean Friendly Repair Shops?

Years ago, the DOA printed a small brochure listing auto repair shops that were "DeLorean friendly" in each state. These shops were, I assume, referred by DOA members whose cars had been repaired or serviced at the shops and who were satisfied enough to recommend the shops to other DeLorean owners.

Is there a way we can create an online version of such a list? I know of two shops in my area that I have used that are DeLorean friendly and which I would recommend to DeLorean owners traveling through Roanoke VA who may need emergency repairs.

I don't make many long trips in my DeLorean, but it would be helpful to have access to such a list while traveling. If I am going through WV, I have no idea where I could get a repair done, however if I get to Ohio, I know DPI and Baurele are options. There are likely several shops in most states that DeLorean owners could recommend to others traveling through if service is needed. My AAA Premier membership will get me a tow if needed for up to 200 miles. It would be great if we could have a national state by state list of shops that were no more than 200 miles apart.

Is there a place or way we can compile such a list and if so can it be kept up to date?

Not to be pedantic, but if your AAA membership will cover a tow up to 200 miles, then the shops could be 400 miles apart. Possibly more do-able.

Don't know of any in GA at the moment (official businesses that is - local owners club members in any state would obviously help where they could)

We have a drop in the next few weeks coming up in NC so we would be half way there.! Plus we are a bit more affordable and throw in a lot of extra's because we are perfectionists here on everything we touch.

Josh that is good to know, I will keep your number in the car and hope that I never need it. My car has never let me down on a trip but I do worry about having to risk a repair while on the road at a shop that has never seen, much less worked on a DeLorean before.

My longest trip in the car since picking it up in Houston was to DMC Midwest which was 1600 miles round trip.

I generally try to make it out to DMC Florida (located about 125 miles from my home) whenever the D needs any serious work done, and they always take great care of me, but for many years before they existed, I had most of my service done at Foreign & Corvette Repair World, located inside the office park at 2108 Mears Parkway (one street SW of the intersection of St. Rd. 7/US441 & Copans Rd./Royal Palm Blvd.) in Margate, Florida (954-972-8410, ask for Nick the owner if he's in.) They are pretty familiar with most of the basic PRV maintainance issues and have had at least two other local D owners besides me bring cars in over the years. I still use them for some simpler things that may not warrant the extended time & full tank of gas consumed by a trip out to DMCFL and back again from my local area, and if you find yourself stuck in the suburban Fort Lauderdale area and are unable to limp or be towed across the Everglades to DMCFL, then they are a good option for you.

Seems like we're in a DMC dead zone in terms of major repair facilities. I don't know how the number of cars 'breaks down' across the country, but when you look at the US Regional Forums, SEDOC has the highest thread count. I think there is a case to be made for a DMCSE facility located somewhere in the North GA mountains, Dahlonega maybe? :wink:

Both of our gas engines rigs are slated for replacement early summer with diesels. This will cut our cost of transport even further and we will continue to pass on the savings. Even now you can't beat the deal for site to site enclosed transport within 24 hours. Most shipping companies have the car for over a week and it sits some where for some reason in a lot some where.

This isn't going to be on the next roadtrip for too many of you guys, but the two places I have used in Ontario since I've had my car I have been quite happy with. In Guelph you could try Peter Hettinga at Guelph Import Service, and in Port Elgin you can try David Fenton at Lake Range Service. I trust both of them with my car and would recommend them to a stranded DeLorean owner from out of town if the need was ever there.

A while back, I called around to a few shops in Northern CA to get some labor estimates on a transmission job. I found that Dietsch Werks in San Jose is not only experienced and equipped to work on our cars, but the owner (Rob) was happy to talk shop and seemed knowledgeable.

They mostly do Lotus and similar race shop work and like most specialty shops they have their busy periods. Their quote was definitely competitive with others I received. I haven't used them but based on our conversations I wouldn't hesitate to if I needed them. They're a little closer than DMCCA.

Only last weekend, several local owners had appointments with him to work on their cars and he just blew them off for some family emergency baseball game, leaving the owners high and jai, to fumble through as best they could.

For those of you that are far from any Delorean shop, if you call your favorite vender they may be able to find a shop that they have dealt with in the past that they can suggest that is nearby. Another source is if you talk to someone else with an old car or a local car club or cruise night someone may be able to recommend a shop or someone who is retired and will take on the job at home. Most of the more common kind of stuff any good, experienced mechanic should be able to do and if he needs any help one of the venders can talk him through. If you are driving through an area and break down the best thing you can do is have a AAA card and a list of local owners who may be able to help. The DoD has a pretty good listing of who is where and what services they can offer. It may be out of date though.

Okay so here's a deal for SEDOC:

Any DeLorean from that area that plans on spending $5,000 or more at DMCFL will get free enclosed shipping into the shop. My shipping company is based in central Florida, you car will not be in transit more than 2 days. You can then drive it home once completed or pay to ship it back for approximately $500 so you can look at it as $250 each way if you like.

I will keep this deal open for 90 days to see how it goes, call to schedule.

I've been saying for a while that Atlanta (or Georgia as a whole) is the perfect location for a DMCSE. I would try and start it myself if I had the funds.

DMCFL was going to be named DMC Southeast originally buy was named Florida for various reasons.

It's not about someone willing to or having the money, there will not be another DMC franchise in the Southeast other than DMCFL, mainly because there is not enough work for two stores.

We can and will beat this option. Any owner on the east coast down to Georgia who plans on spending 3500.00 or more at DPI will have the option of free shipping to our facility. Our shipping company is in house and will pick up in 24 hours or less. Upon completion we will return the car to you enclosed for 800.00 or less (depending on fuel costs) or you can drive it home.

If multiple owners are interested we will do pick and drop options like we frequently do in Pittsburgh and NJ knocking the shipping costs down even further by keeping the trailer full both ways.

I know this is old, but I thought I’d update it. Abacus Racing currently works on 3 DeLoreans from the Hampton Roads area. They do good work but are very busy, so expect your car to be down for a while, even for small jobs. One of their technicians is a former Volvo guy and is very familiar with the PRV.
