Ok
Fitted new fans and shroud today, thanks Toby, seems to have fixed the overheating issue. But in the drive home from my friends house wherevwe did the work, the batter light kept flickering on and off. Any suggestions??

Measure your voltage at the jump terminal when the fans are off and when they are on. Does it flicker when the fans turn on? You should be able to see the temp gauge drop when the fans are running.

I've seen that happen if the alternator is not tightened sufficiently, or the alternator belt does not have the proper tension, and the car goes over a rough part of the road.
Either condition causes a momentary loss of alternator, causing it to appears as the alternator suddenly went off line, thus the "Battery" light.
So, just in case, check your belt tension and alternator mounting bolt torques.

As mentioned check the mounting and the belt tension. It could also be a bad electrical connection but the most likely cause is the internal voltage regulator is dying. The fix is to replace or rebuild the alternator. Before doing that have the battery load-tested.
