Jack Stand Placement

This seems like a stupid question, but I have to know the answer. Where is the best place to put a jack stand?

I used to jack up the car and stick the jack stand directly adjacent to the jack points. This worked fine for a little while, but the last time I did that, when I slowly lowered the car onto the stand it ended up slightly crushing the underbody enough to flake and chip the fiberglass. I haven't used my jack stands since.

So where the hell do you put them so you don't kill the car?
