View Full Version : General Spent the last 4 months putting a Chevy LS1 engine into my DeLorean, now it runs!

Some people may be aware that I was putting a Chevy LS1 5.7L V8 engine into my car for my Senior Design Project in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati. This weekend, after 9 months of planning and 4 months of physical work, I got the engine running. In addition to installing the LS1, the had to be converted from an automatic to a manual transmission.

Here's a video of the first start:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFI2gZay79M

Currently there is no exhaust past the headers so it is VERY LOUD!

If anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to try and answer them as best as possible. It's obviously not totally finished, but it's getting close. I still have to pick out mufflers and pipe the exhaust as well as re-install the back end but not much else. Just clean up the wiring and put the console back in. I have a very large amount of photos so if you have any questions or want to see something specific just ask.

Also, since the beginning I've been documenting the project here:

Since the forum doesn't allow more than one video per post, here is the other video I made:

This video is after I hooked up the throttle cable. The quality is better, however the first video does a much better job of expressing how loud it actually is.

WOW, that thing is loud! Is the exhaust not on it yet? :)

Congrats! Can't wait to see some more video and hear how it runs for you.

EDIT: Was typing this as you were posting the second video. Yep, open headers would account for the noise :) Great project!

Yep, I have got to figure out what I'm going to do about the exhaust, haha, it is CRAZY loud right now. Though the first video is definitely louder, neither really does the sound justice.

As far as the license plate, I've thought of a lot of different ones. Currently it's 2 Z FUTUR but next go around I definitely want something that focuses on the engine. I was thinking maybe LS1 DMC, DVETTE, DELVET is cool too. It will be a tough decision.

It's essentially stock. I didn't change any cams or anything. I am using Hooker engine hugging headers, (there is SO little room for this thing, lol) so thats a small upgrade. I had a place in town (Cincy Speed) reprogram the computer for me. They deleted all the anti theft passkey stuff, 2 of the 4 O2 sensors, all the transmission communication stuff, EGR, A/C (as I'm just going to let the DeLorean system run the compressor), and a few other things.

Once it's totally back together I plan on taking it to them for a dyno run and tune but since everything is brand new, (clutch, flywheel, etc), I need to put a LEAST 500mi on it, probably more like 1000 just to break it in before doing a dyno pull.

EDIT: Just noticed in your signature that you have a 97 Vette, very cool! My dad has a 98, and honestly, it's the reason I went with an LS1. After driving that, I was hooked on the engine. I briefly considered a Northstar, but then I figured if I was going to do the work, I should do it right, haha.

I predict a 0-60 run of 4 seconds for that Delorean!:woot:

Cool man, I think this swap has been tried before, but not successfully. Yeah, I noticed the 'vette in the video; that's awesome, I LOVE these cars. What are you using for a transmission?

Call me crazy, but I'm actually using the DeLorean manual transmission. I spent a lot of time on the GT40 boards and they use our transmission all the time in their replicas. I have talked to many people who put small block fords and chevy's in front of the tranmission and said they put upwards of 450hp on a stock UN1 regularly. I completely rebuilt the transmission including using Toby's Bulletproof coupler so we'll see. I have accepted the fact that if I get stupid, it would likely be possible for me to break something inside.

I've driven the 2JZ Supra motor car and it uses the stock transmission too with the coupler and it's dyno results say 400hp so that definitely gives me confidence. Still that car is turbocharged so the torque build isn't quite as extreme as what I'll be looking at. If I actually do get stupid and blow the input shaft, I figure I'll consider the upgraded, one piece input shaft which is rated for upwards of 500hp:
http://delorean.co.uk/parts/gearset.jpg

I'm also considering the Quaife limited slip differential in the future.

This is far better than anything houston has ever done. I'm still in shock. Wow. Have you gotten to do much driving on that transmission yet? This is the type of fuel injection I would want. Amazing.

400 freaking horspower? There is no way that little transmisison is going to handle that. Have you upgraded your brakes/suspension to handle this?

Nicholas,

Great work !! You need to bring this to the Woodward Dream Cruise 2012. Folks in the Detroit area like DeLoreans
(JZD was a hometown boy that made it big) and there are thousands of gear-heads at Woodward every year, and
they would love to see and hear this combination, running next to some Vettes, Cobras and of course, GTO's.

We plan to have another big showing of DeLoreans at the Bloomfield Hills Mercedes Benz Dealership lot this year.

More details to follow.

400? The LS1 stock is 350. I may have missed him mentioning any mods to it. I'd be worried about the transmission too, but for all we know it may come out fine.

Your signature indicates VIN 1643, but would you confirm 1643 is the car you're putting the LS-1 in? Seems like a dumb question, but I want to update our database and I want to be sure I have the VIN right. Thanks.

Yep! VIN 1643. Also if you keep track of the transmissions, the car was originally an automatic and now it's a manual. As stated before... we'll see how well this transmission holds up, haha.

Nicholas - so a related question, I saw the Eqqus tach in the video. Are you planning to adapt the OEM gauges to work with this new motor? I guess voltage, fuel, speedo and the warning lights (except oil pressure) would work right off the bat. Are you going to get the tach, oil pressure and coolant temp gauges calibrated and working with the new motor? That would be really sweet, to have a full stock interior with this motor.

Nicholas R

Nah. This thing is just pure amazing. I hope he upgrades his suspension soon. He needs some new control arms and outriggers now.

The car already had the Eibach suspension, all around (with whatever shocks DMCH sells with them). Also has the front end shock tower strut bar from DMCMW, and Martin's front lower control arm brackets. Still, I do want to get the adjustable lower links in the back end. When it's lowered, my tires do tend to lean.

You know I thought this engine would be a whole lot heavier, but it's not. I'd say maybe 50-80lbs more than the PRV. (it may be a big V8 but it's still mostly hollow, haha) I also LOST a lot of weight in converting from an automatic to a manual. I had no idea how much that automatic weighs until I took it out. The manual I can pretty easily pick up and set on the workbench. The automatic I've been wheeling around on a furniture dolly since it's removal.

I do plan on adapting all the gauges. I'm actually upset at myself that when I had my PRV running, I didn't take readings or anything of the signals that the engine sent out for coolant temp, tach, and oil pressure. Like the DeLorean, the LS1 has all electronic signals going to the gauges so I'm sure it's not impossible to get the LS1 to jive with the dash, just some work. The aftermarket tach was just to give me peace of mind during these first startups and testing. I've got an aftermarket coolant temp and oil pressure gauge hooked up right now too.

Nice! I figured they weren't permanent since the Eqqus was still attached to the hang card (planning to return it?? lol)

I bet savvy members would be willing to try and get you any voltage readings you need from their PRVs since this project seems to have engaged us all.

Haha, I'll see what I can do. Dont get me wrong, I would LOVE to make this a kit, but it definitely wasn't easy. I'd have to really make a good list of what was necessary. Making something that was plug and play would definitely be a challange. I got really lucky several times having access to different equipment (lathes, mills, waterjet, CNC). I also got let down several times. (I spent 8 weeks trying to work out a flywheel/clutch situation with McLeod racing in California before I finally told them I would figure it out myself.) I really wonder whether or not it would be necessary to do a body frame separation to do this. I did partially becuase I needed to do the transmission swap, but if I didn't have to do that, I really wonder.

I know that when Ed put the supra engine in his car he didn't separate the frame and body. Come to think of it, I wonder what he did for fuel. I completely removed the existing fuel lines/accumulator/fuel filter, and ran 2 stainless braided lines directly from a high powered pump, directly to a fuel filter/regulator in the engine compartment. Running those lines with the body on would have certainly been a challenge.

The only real frame modifications were that I made the back bumper piece removable/bolt on (like they do at the DMC locations), and cut a notch for the nose of the water pump pulley. Then where the transmission sits, there was one small modification just so that the transmission would sit 2" forward. Otherwise, no major frame mods. I did have to slightly increase the size of the hole in the firewall in the engine compartment on the drivers side so that the wiring harness and computer plugs could go through but it wasn't major. Also had to modify the bellhousing so that the starter would work on the other side.

If someone was interested in the project and also wanted to do it, I certainly would give as much advise as possible.

A quick list of special parts I would list would be:
-custom engine mounts
-strengthened and modified transmission mounts
-engine/transmission adapter plate
-Powermaster high torque gear reduction starter (because it's TINY)
-Custom flywheel
-Carrier for pilot bearing (to adapt the Delorean pilot bearing to the LS crank shaft at the proper spacing)
-.4" flywheel spacer
-CTSV flywheel bolts (as they're the longest M11 flywheel bolts available)
-04-06 GTO oil pan (it's the only LS1 oil pan with a front sump, otherwise the sump is in the middle of the frame crossmember)
-LS1 capable fuel pump/filter/regulator
-block hugging headers (flipped so that the collectors point toward the front of the engine (back of the car)
-Had to relocate the oil pressure sensor so that the intake would fit backward (having it the normal way would have just about put the air intake in the license plate)
-Lots of special coolant lines, vacuum lines, etc
-My engine only came with the computer (which had to be reprogrammed) and engine wiring harness so I went to the junkyard to get an interior wiring harness
-I'm sure there are some others but these are the main things

By the way, 1batt4u, any update on your Double DIN dash kit? haha I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to put that into this car. I actually have a flip up head unit (that I do not like) that has a broken volume knob (I have to use the stupid remote) that I keep putting off replacing in the hopes that a double DIN option will become available.

Yea, I kind of kept it on the down low for a few reasons. For one, I was worried there would be too many questions that I couldn't respond to. This project consumed pretty much all my free time for the last few months. Another thing is that it happens SO often where someone claims "I'M GOING TO DO THIS BIG SPECTACULAR AWESOME THING" then it never happens for whatever reason. Though I wasn't overly concerned that the project would fail, I didn't want to risk loosing all credibility by posting that this was happening, have people expect it, then have it not happen. I just swore to myself that until I actually got the engine running, I wouldn't post within the DeLorean world. Plus, I had a hard enough time updating the car blog so updating a thread would have been that much more to keep on top of.

I also kind of wanted the "unveiling" factor, haha...

No numbers quite yet. There is a place in town here that I'm hoping to do a dyno run on before DCS (if I find time) Since everything is brand new though, I need to put a good 1000 miles or so on the clutch and flywheel before pushing it that hard. I'm at about 200 so far.

Also, I made a new entry to the blog. Pretty much sums up everything that happened after the body/frame rejoining process. I wish I had broken it up and updated as the events actually happened but... so little time.

ls1delorean.blogspot.com

Really the only thing left is to figure out the A/C. I'm hoping it wont be too difficult. The fittings going into the compress normally are remarkably similar to the DeLorean hoses so we'll see. I definitely want to get that going before the drive from Ohio to DCS.

Well they sound pretty good. But the look isn't perfect, not that I can criticize as I don't have a dang LS1 in my car!!

Based on what you showed in that video of where the water pump and crank pulley sit in the fasicia, what other options will you even have?

Not much, haha. It's possible that I could re-route the pipe itself so that the mufflers would sit higher and sit flat so they wouldn't hang down the way they do. That would however put several more very tight bends into the exhaust which isn't always the best. I'm just going to keep looking at options, keep talking to people. Everyone seems to have suggestions, some pretty good, some just alright but I'm taking note of it all. It'll probably stay this way at least till the end of the summer. Honestly, I need a break. It was not smart of me to force this project to such a tight deadline (the school aspect is due thursday). Next big car job will be a much more leisurely project, haha.

Route the pipes through the pontoons. ;-)

Regardless of how the exhaust turns out in the end, I have to say that you've done the most impressive engine swap I've seen. I hope to see (and hear!) it in person some day. Bravo!

I can't quite see how close it is, but is there any concern that any thermal expansion of the engine would cause that pulley to rub on the fascia?

I can't quite see how close it is, but is there any concern that any thermal expansion of the engine would cause that pulley to rub on the fascia?

I doubt it but anything is possible. There is almost exactly 2" between the fascia and crank pulley. I have the stainless steel lower fascia heat shield so that holds the fascia in place pretty tightly. The engine is mounted to the frame with 8 bolts and polyurethane motor mounts so I'm not too concerned about it going anywhere.

Still if I ever want to service the engine, the fascia will almost definitely have to be removed in order to get access. I've gotten pretty good at taking it off.
Remove the tail lights
3 bolts on each side going into the pontoon
2 bolts on each side for the L brackets
7 bolts mounting holding the fascia to the SS heat shield (which for me are actually bolts as all the studs pulled out of the fascia)
1 bolt on each side underneath holding the fascia to the fascia mounting brackets
Remove the side markers and disconnect the sockets
Unplug the black connector in the corner
Lift up and away

...and now I can change the serpentine belt, haha :D

Not all that out of line compared to some more modern cars. My son just changed the alternator belt on his '05 Audi S4, had to remove both headlights and the front fascia, and move the radiator, to get access to the belt.

Haha!!! My dad does have a C5. I should have just swapped with him, haha. Would have saved money but definitely not time.

As for the Tach, anyone ever seen or used one of these:
Dakota Digital Universal Tach Interface
http://www.dakotadigital.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=127/prd127.htm
http://www.dakotadigital.com/cartimages/prd_127.jpg
http://www.dakotadigital.com/cartimages/prdp_1334.jpg

You know what's interesting; I did some research and despite being a V8, the tach signal created by the LS1 computer is actually 4 pulses per cycle (2 per revolution), the same as a 4 cylinder engine not an 8 cylinder. I have to put the aftermarket tach in the "4cyl" spot to get a reading. (I thought it was weird going 65 in 5th gear only doing 1300rpm, lol)

Mark D
05-16-2012, 05:05 PM
I used that exact Dakota Digital signal interface on my old Honda Civic. I built up an external BTTF style digital speedometer and needed to convert the signal from the VSS to work with the external speedo guts.

I've since sold the civic so I have no need for the signal converter. If you want to buy I'll give you a good deal... It still works perfectly.

Epic job on the LS1 install by the way. I sounds incredible running open headers!!

Just made an update to the blog. Did a LOT of work to get ready for the drive from Cincinnati to Orlando.

Some of the bigger things were:
All 4 Wheel bearings
Upgraded front brakes
Got AC working
(re)installed cruise Control
Thermostat upgrade
LS7 PCV system

And I finally got the dash tach working so no more aftermarket gauges! I ended up using the Dakota Digital universal tach interface. Works great!

excellent. how did the "LSD" perform on the trip? :)

Very well! Actually, I had more trouble with it the last time I made the same trip (Cincinnati to Orlando) with the PRV. On the last drive, I lost ignition while on the highway because one of the connectors on the ignition resistor on the firewall essentially burned off. Had to pull off the road and crimp a new connector on while on the shoulder. Luckily my emergency bags content is nothing short of ridiculous. Most of what you is shown above in the bonnet is emergency stuff; battery jump box with integrated air pump, craftsman tool kit, my red bag of tools and parts, and a floor jack. Though I didn't need any of it on the drive!

The only one thing I would note is that my expectations for Florida heat+humidity were certainly correct. The LS1 is designed to run hot for better fuel emissions and combustion (as high as 230F according to the manual ), but I dont really like the idea. Though it never got that hot, I bet that I could reach it with the AC on max on an excessively hot day. I had planned on upgrading my radiator from my 3 core brass to Ed Uding's performance aluminum radiator prior to this drive but with my lack of available time plus shipping time I just couldn't be sure it would arrive in time. I'm sure I can survive the summer with the current radiator if need be, but I'm thinking about ordering it now and doing the job when I get time while I'm down here. Just one less thing to worry about. I've talked to Ed and we're pretty sure it will be a suitable component.

TTait
06-11-2012, 02:03 AM
I know Ed's unit has more surface area, but I thought I also understood that aluminum is not as efficient at transferring heat as brass. Is there any way to compare the cooling capacity?

BTW - a big vote for Ed - his stuff is always first class...

Tom

Mark D
06-11-2012, 09:58 AM
The thermal condutivity of aluminum is higher than brass.

Cooling capacity of the radiator will mainly depend on the design...rows of tubing, fin density, core thickness, etc. There are ways of bench testing different radiators... I have forgotten most of my thermo from school but I believe all you would need is to supply a fluid through the radiator at a constant inlet temp and then measure the temp differential (coolant temp in - coolant temp out). Worst case scenario would be static, but if someone were to actualy test they could experiment with different ram air speeds. Sounds like a fun project

Very cool!

I have a friend who is really into Fiero's; we've talked about this on his 88GT for our next project, haha.

The only thing I will say, is that there is already a strong network out there for V8's, especially LSX motors, in Fieros.

You can pretty much buy any part necessary here:
http://v8archie.com/v8Archie/home.htm

There's also a wealth of info out there, tons of FAQs'.

If my buddy ever does decide to pull the trigger on this project in his car, I'd LOVE to be part of it because all the homework is already been done, all we have to do is put it in.

Certainly not to diminish the coolness of the project, just less design required.

On a side note, I did install Ed's aluminum radiator and now, even on the hottest day so far, 97F outside at about 80% humidity, stuck in traffic with the AC on max, I haven't broken 208 coolant temp. Certainly a load off my mind.

:deviltail: Can't wait to see it on the drag strip (if you are going to give her a run)!

I actually took it to the strip once this year but didn't end up running it because I didn't want to use the tires on my chrome rims (my good set). My original grey rims have an older set that I would rather have used. I tried planning a trip to the drag strip with a few friends several times afterward. Everyone kept either being tied up, or on the 2 times we were all free to go, it rained and they canceled test and tune night!! Worst luck. I was REALLY hoping to run it this season but I guess I'll have to wait until spring.

It's okay, it'll give me an opportunity to finish redesigning the intake before I really test it. I've got all the pieces for it, just need to measure it all, cut it up, and install. Hoping to get it on the car in the next few weeks.:D

Yup, it's been updated. I've updated it twice now showing all the changes I've made since DCS.

I've entered my car into the Cavalcade of Customs Carshow (http://www.autorama.com/?page_id=225) at the Cincinnati Convention Center in January so I've been trying to get a lot done to get ready. The last thing on my list is the intake. I really want to get rid of the flexible ducting I have right now. Not only is it restrictive, but it's hideous.:

Nicholas R

I hope this is not personal, but how much would you say you have in the conversion(not including your own labor)?

No problem. I kept a pretty close eye on all of my expenses. I've had a hard time splicing down what costs are attributed to what projects. Obviously since I was splitting the frame and body, I went ahead and fixed a LOT of other things at the same time. For instance, I replaced every rubber hose on the car. Also the swap involved the whole transmission rebuild and conversion.

All in all, I would say that the full job was ~$8,500. That includes things like engine, engine rebuild parts, transmission, pedal box, shifter, transmission rebuild, headers, engine mounts, brackets, piping, wiring, hoses, clutch, tons of other odds and ends, as well as a lot raw materials and custom parts.

I was able to sell a ton of my extra stuff. Between my original engine, transmission, UK Exhaust, and tons of extra LS1 and DeLorean parts, I recouped about $6,000.

That being said, despite the total project cost being ~$2,500, I estimated that I have about 750 hours in the project between research, design, fabrication, and building. Monetarily, it was a great deal; but time wise I broke the bank several times over. I would never be able to afford it if I had to pay myself so I have to work for free, haha. This exhaust for instance only cost ~$100 for materials, but about I probably spent ~8-10 hours on it.

It's a labor of love though. Every DeLorean knows this. I will say that this is why after doing this project, I cannot imagine someone buying a car like the one for sale with the 5.0 mustang engine. No one will ever know this car like me and I would feel bad for anyone who had to figure the car out, lol.

Nicholas R

That's pretty much what I installed. A cherry bomb is just a brand of glass pack mufflers. I just bought the jegs performance brand glass packs because they had the overall shortest shell length. I needed mufflers shorter that 12" and cherry bomb didn't have any that short.

I agree though they do sound pretty awesome. My buddy just bought some 24" cherry bombs for us to install on his 73 charger. I'm sure it'll sound pretty good when we re pipe his exhaust! :D

I finally got around to fixing the intake to remove the old dryer hose looking intake. I had to take the rear fascia off in order to do all the piping but it was worth it. There is now a cone filter inside each pontoon so it draws air from both sides. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out:
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cdvcKMnCHXI/UO0JejqFtuI/AAAAAAAABG4/mIAvuiny20c/s1600/3.jpg

I posted a bunch more in-process/build photos on the car's blog: http://ls1delorean.blogspot.com

I also finally weighed the car. In case anyone's interested, the new weight with a full tank of gas is 2,974lbs with a weight distribution of 36.3% front, 63.7% rear. I really wish I had weighed the car before hand since I dont really know what the cars normally weigh but oh well. :D

Yeah - I figure he's got a post coming up called "How to attach the rear fascia with quarter-turn fasteners". Or maybe hood pins. . . .

Well, at least he's got it down now!

That's pretty slick on the air intakes. Being the filters are now in the pontoons , how so you plan on changing or cleaning them without (guessing) having to remove the rear facia each time? Or am I not seeing something in the photo?

Unfortunately the way I have it setup right now, the fascia does still have to be removed in order to access the one on the passenger side. The cutout for the carbon canister on the driver side was easily big enough to fit the filter but in order to get the filter inside the passenger side, the existing 4" hole in the end of the pontoon had to be increased to 5". There are enough other jobs that require fascia removal that hopefully I can lump the jobs together. I may change it in the future but hopefully the air filters are low enough maintenance that difficult access wont be a problem. I suppose we'll see :D.

I'm pretty the process for doing anything on Nick's car now starts with:

Step 1. Remove rear fascia

:evilgrin::evilgrin::evilgrin:

This is sadly very true. However I am quite proud of myself; last week I was able to remove the serpentine belt WITHOUT removing the fascia! I actually needed to remove the AC belt but it's behind the serpentine belt so they both had to come off.

You know now you've got me thinking...

If you want to deal with difficult access, come work on my Lotus Elise.....:evilgrin::evilgrin:

Just FYI, in case anyone is interested in this project, I completely changed the layout of the blog so that it is FAR more easy to access past project steps. During the project I wanted the "follow along" layout, but now that its over (for the most part), I want it to be very easy to access any part of the project.

Now on the home page, though still listed reverse chronologically, all the posts are shown and can be easily picked.

Fantastic!!!

If DMC offered this conversion, I'm seriously interested as I cannot do this myself.

I have been wondering if you have any concern that this arrangement might starve the engine of air slightly (though even if it was 20% down in HP, it would still be plenty in this application).

I'm thinking that in it's normal environment at the front of a car, there is plenty of air swirling around under the hood but in the D, the engine air is just coming in through the small louvres in the wings. Of course, this engine volume is 2x what the PRV is, and it suffices with just one side, so maybe it is a moot point.

I thought it was two, one in each pontoon.

yes, Nick's does have two intakes and a PRV has just 1. His engine volume is about twice what the PRV is too, so that makes sense, but his HP is maybe 3x or 4x (I'm not sure exactly).

I'm just wondering if those rear wing angled air intakes can provide enough air for an engine that is normally front mounted, without de-rating the HP somewhat.

I bet if he put those scoops on the intakes it'd help......and look bad ass.

That is absolutely on my list. I just need to figure out how. I would like them to be black plastic. I've looked at trying to replace the existing vents with an entire scoop assembly but after seeing how everything fits together, I dont think that's feasible. Anyone know how the people that have scoops hold them in place? Does the 3M trim tape hold them?

To my knowledge, yes, they were attached with 3m tape.

I made some stainless scoops to go on both sides. They are held on with a tab that extends between the bumper and the quarter panel. I did drill one discreet hole through the original scoop and made a bracket that spans the side window. Just one bolt holds it securely at any speed for the last 20 years. Sorry no photos.....Nick?
