Today I was finally able to take delivery of my Delorean. This one has sat in a Hanger for 14 years. The former owner and I pushed the car out and down to the plane rack so I could clean the dust off. I had her transported to my shop where work will soon begain to bring her back to life.

Congratulations on the delorean. The Pacific Northwest Delorean Culb is a great club to join. Talk to Arnie Brandon he is on the forum. Also there is a great place in Bellevue for all the parts you need- DMC northwest. Talk with Toby.

Very cool find! I love it.

The chassis may 1374, but that doesn't look like the VIN number to me. It has the grooved hood with no gas flap. If it were VIN 1374 it would have a gas flap, unless the hood has been changed out.

Good luck with your project. Looks like you have a good Delorean to start with.

haha, I noticed that first thing too. Though it does definitely have the dark rims and any car with dark rims would have definitely come with a gas flap. Perhaps the gentleman who stowed it in the hanger can solve this mystery.

I don't suppose it was stored in the hanger with a completely Dry fuel system. If it was, your are lucky. If not please take photos of the mess inside the tank and other pieces. I assume you did not start the car prior to purchase because you did your research here or other places on the web telling you to never attempt to start a Delorean that has sat for an excessive period of time without cleaning the fuel system first.

We will look forward to your resurrection progress photos.

Thanks for all the kind words about this car, while no credit to me, I believe that the former owner took great car of this car. I look forward to his reaction when this car is refurbished and back to its former self.

That is the VIN number on car. I would imagine that the hood was swapped out at some point if it was not native to this car.

From what I understand , He purchased this car in Arizona then brought it up to Seattle. It was a daily driver for a short stint while he worked at Boeing as Engineer. It has been in this configuration in all the time he has had the car. We'd have to look back to its life prior to the Pacific Northwest for that answer.

I haven't had a chance to evaluate the fuel system. It was my major concern, simply due to it being one of the only things that need attention outside of a good cleaning and minor sorting. I have the fuel pump, soft lines, filter, accumulator and other various fuel system parts on their way. All in all, I only spent 15 minutes looking at the car before we had a handshake, it is in great condition. It looks great sitting with the other cars in my collection, especially the Lotus Esprit S4 turbo because of the similar body lines. Pictures of progress will start most likely in the next month. I am working on the 69 Lotus Europa S2 right now and that buys some time to collect the parts needed to turn the key on this DMC. -Patrick

No more than 48 hours had passed since I had filled out the member application, dropped it into the mailbox, and I had received a call from Arnie welcoming me to the PNDC. We chatted for a bit. Very friendly chap, I'm looking forward to meeting up in person at a club event. I've met Toby a few times now. He is active in the Evergreen Lotus Club and was very kind in hosting a shop tour/Lotus meet at his shop recently in Bellvue WA. Friendly guys all around. -Patrick

That's an interesting find Dash Eight. I know someone who swapped out their Delorean hood for a later build hood (due to lack of availability of grooved hoods) ,because of hail damage. Car look fantastic and you sound like you have a nice collection of cars. You are going to have a blast with your Delorean!

It had to have been swapped at some point. Here are some pictures of the locking gas cap and the relief that had been made in the hood trim:

I had a few extra minutes this afternoon so I yanked out the fuel pump and added more parts to my list of things to buy. I was happy that the fuel was no where as bad as was in a few other cars that I had to do complete flushes with. Most of the plastic was brittle and if not broken already was well on its way.

Incidentally, the locking gas cap and cutout aren't proof of anything. #3416 has the grooved hood with no flap (but a cutout for it) and locking gas cap. I think even the flat hoods have the cutout for the flap in the substructure.

Yup that's pretty typical deterioration. FYI it is common to use over the counter 1/4 inch / 6MM fuel injector hose for the exterior supply and return hoses but do not use it inside the tank. The outer rubber is not fuel compatible and will breakdown, leaving the the thin inner membrane. Just cut the old hoses off the fitting barbs. The fittings are difficult to try and separate and it isn't necessary.

6/10/2012 Update.
In the past two weekends, I have been working to get the parts list put together. In doing so came across a mouse nest. This, of course, ment a complete disassembly of the interior was in order to clean and inspect for damage. The nest was the size of a soccer ball in the cubby behind the drivers seat. I can’t put my finger on where the material it was constructed out of came from. I haven’t found anything on the car damaged. Wire harness all around looks good. I am guessing that the crafty little bugger brought in the fibers from out-sourced orange carpet.
Anyhoo, I have removed the dash, seats, carpets, center console, and heating/ac parts for cleaning and refurbishment. I need to recover the seats and the dash anyway so this work comes sooner than later. I manage the equipment cleaning departments at my hospitals so I am using Sani-Cloth to decontaminate the entire car's hard surfaces. Then following up with Maguire’s interior cleaner and protectant to bring the materials back to presentable. I have been using Wool-lite , a soft brush, and a hose connected to the hot water heater on the carpets. They look and smell great. For the dash refurb and the door panels, both suncracked and brittle, I was able to find marine grade “whisper soft” vinyl for 50% off at JoAnn’s fabric. Picked up 3 yards and the 3M trim adhesive. I have signed up for sewing classes to learn how to do the French stitching on my knee pad coverings. I figured it was about time. I’ve wanted to learn this craft for awhile. I am going to take my covers in to class and pull a pattern off them and go to work. I hope to get to the door cards shortly after. The fuel system is now dry and clean. So progress is being made in a few directions. I decided to pull the finish plate on the underbelly to clean out behind it. There was some grass coming from around the edges. With the mice, I figure there might be a nest in there also. I’m going to try to finish topside before the undercarriage gets underway.

I thought I’d post up some sort of update on my DeLorean. I haven’t made much (if any) progress in the last 6 months outside of collecting parts and finally getting it up on jack stands to pull the wheels for further inspection of items that need attention. At the same time I took delivery of this car, I moved into the city to be closer to work. I moved too far to make serious progress on my projects. I'm currently looking for a warehouse in the industrial district to move everything into here in Seattle. Until then, I usually only have one day on a weekend to work on them. Between 5 project cars and family needs, nothing has seemed to get accomplished recently on any of them. I have decided to commit the lion’s share of my time to the DeLorean and get this thing back on track. I’d like to drive it this upcoming summer. My Mom passed away 3 weeks ago after years of illness, so I am going to bring my Dad down and have him help work on this car. He's not into cars at all but I think he will enjoy helping me out and getting out of the house. I'll put him in charge of the electrical testing as he enjoys that kind of thing. Work like this is good therapy...well for me anyway. Hopefuly there will be many updates to come. Pictures of current status:

Major progress today. I had my 95 Lotus Esprit S4 picked up and hauled to the body shop. It has been taking up space in my main shop for 3 years now while I've collected the parts to fix the fiberglass. This gives me the space to install the Toyota 4AGE into my 69 Lotus Europa and then I will be able to move the Delorean into the shop that has all the tools and equipment! It is a pain in the ass not having the tools where you need them while doing major work. I am looking forward to finally getting stuff done!

Today I fired up the engine for it's first time in 13+ years. It runs great and all systems check out. Time to reassemble the interior, fit the upper and lower ball joints, install the new fans, and sway bar bushing kit, fit new tires and we are good to go! only has taken 2 years so far...-P

First good looking car and good work from what I've seen.

Someone may have mentioned this but simply having a locking gas cap doesn't prove your car ever had a gas flap hood. My car vin 03254 has been in my family since 1985 (Before BTTF hit theaters ;-) and it only had 6K miles. The car originally had a grooved hood AND a locking gas cap. The factory was using what ever was on hand to build cars.

Hobosexuals new music video: “BMX” features the first day my 1981 DeLorean had been back out on public roads since 1994. I purchased this car on May 25th 2012. Since then, I have restored, rebuilt, and refurbished almost every part on the car. I was very excited to finish it up in time to shoot the scenes. Hope you like the video!

Thanks for the compliments. I was very excited to get the DeLorean finished. I have only driven it 13 miles around town. I've now moved on to my 1973 Innocenti Mini 1300 project for this winter. I'm dying to drive that car.

Steve, you have excellent taste in cars with DeLorean/Elan combo. I have a 1991 Elan M100 with 44k on it. It took me 6 years to find one that wasn't red. As you know, (owning a M100 yourself) they are incredible little cars. I know a few Lotus owners that also have a DeLorean.

Thanks! I'm not sure I understand what you mean by paint job, only the front and rear fascias are painted. The black side stripes were a dealer add on option on I believe.

Here's a pic from this last weekend with the DeLorean joining the rest of my collection. I needed to clean up and reorganize the shop to make space to continue work on my Europa. Everything had to come out. It helped that the rain held off all day. It always seems one car in parts takes five times the space. I keep losing tools and tripping over stuff so a good set up work area will hopefully help.
