For those who are a little more familiar with the internals on the 5-speed:

In chasing down a chronic axle leak I decided to check the breather and make sure it wasn't plugged. I tried to remove it but it broke in half, leaving the body still stuck in the transmission case. An unsuccessful attempt to fish it out with a pick sent it further into the case.

Is likely to still be stuck in the top, or has it probably dropped down into the transmission somewhere?

It is captured in a recess that is an oil vapor separator. No harm, it will just sit there and not plug anything up. If it does go all the way inside, it will dissolve in short order. It is very soft.

Great, thanks for the info!

The external piece fell apart readily. I figured if the part that was left behind did meet a gear it would be a very short and flattening relationship.
