me and meghan have spent all day dismanteling the block on 774 until we hit a road block. I cant seem to loosen the large nut inside the pulley. All im doing is cranking the engine over by hand. Atleast I know its moving smoothly inside the block. I went looking for a large enough socket at the store but no luck. The nut has been soaking in PB blaster all day but still resisting. Help.

You could rent an electric impact from a Rent-all place or you could buy a cheap one from Harbor Freight like this one I have:
http://www.harborfreight.com/12-electric-impact-wrench-68099.html.
Since I don't have an air compressor large enough to handle an air-driven one. It's kind of a piece but it gets the job done.
After you get the nut off, the pulley should just slide off BUT make sure you take the pulley off with the key at 12 O'clock so it doesn't fall into the oil pan!!!!!

Sears? They should have it. Or any big tool place. Don't need an impact one. Regular duty socket is fine.

Do you find any access problems with it? I was debating electric vs. pnumatic and the electrical ones concern me because they are quite a bit larger and I'm woried that there are areas I won't be able to get to. Of course I don't know if my compressor is large enough to handle pnumatic either.
Cheers.

Since his engine is out of the car I don't see access as a problem :-) I was able to use mine with the muffler removed, engine in car. Had to slightly flex bumper.

If your compressor has a tank and can pump it to 90 PSI or more than you can use the air impact. The amount you need is such a short pulse, most anything can power it.
Now don't expect other air tools to work with a small compressor. Drills, grinders, paint guns all need to run a long time.

Didn't see anyone mention it yet, the nut is 35mm or 36mm. Apparently they used both. The nut may require extended time with the impact. I have a small compressor and I had to wait and let it recharge about 6 times before my impact got mine off.

Thanks guys for he feedback, I will be able to address this again tomorrow hopefully after finding the right socket. I luckily already have the gun and compressor for this. also the picture was just a random picture off google just for an example. My engine is still in the car but every angle is accessable now. Any thoughts on if speacial-t wouldnt swap mine for a refurbished pair due to the crack on the lip?10758

When you return a core, ask yourself if you would accept that core for the one you were buying.

"After you get the nut off, the pulley should just slide off BUT make sure you take the pulley off with the key at 12 O'clock so it doesn't fall into the oil pan!!!!!"
What is the consequence of losing the key into the oil pan? Will the crankshaft pulley not go back on, or will it go on but slip when the engine runs?

It will go on but will slip on the crankshaft. Not to mention you don't need a piece of metal floating around in the sump.

Just in case others might follow this thread;
My recent experience with the crank pulley nut was that it was a bear to get off! Mine was a size 36mm nut. What was funny is that I measured the nut with calipers and it was dead on at 35mm. I hunted and hunted to find a store locally that had such a large size. I finally found them at Car Quest. I bought a 35mm impact socket and it did not fit! I took it back and exchanged it for a 36mm which did fit...kind of odd since it measured spot on at 35mm. Anyway, I got out the 1/2 Craftsman breaker bar and could not budge the nut. This was after the nut had been sprayed down over the previous 3 days with PB Blaster. I then put my Hi Lift Jack tube Handle over the 1/2 breaker bar and I still could not budge the nut loose. In fact, I bent the Craftsman breaker bar!! I then borrowed a 1/2 drive air driven impact gun. No help there... Finally, I got a 4' section of 2" pipe and placed that over the Hi Lift Lift jack handle and was able to break it loose by extreme leverage. That of course was with someone else holding the engine stand because I was literally tipping the whole assembly over!
