View Full Version : General Luggage Rack Knobs: replacements and/or thread pattern?

Upon arriving in Cocoa Beach this afternoon for my vacation before DCS, when I pulled the luggage/bike rack off the car I realized one of the knobs was missing. I likely simply forgot to put it one this morning (or someone took it, it's unlikely it vibrated off...), but whatever the cause, I'm down one rack knob.

I hit the local hardware store and picked up a couple of M8-1.25 wing nuts which the staff there thought matched the thread on the remaining knobs best, but when I got back to the car, they definitely don't work.

Does anyone know what the thread on the luggage rack mounts is so I can not have one leg flapping around? :p Thanks!

The Racks were made by an american company. The threads are probably SAE 5/16 coarse.

You can get stainless versions on mcmastercarr's site. I dont have the link, but 'r00b" here on the forums got em.

Hit the Ace Hardware again, this time with the car on hand to test things out- looks like they are 5/16, probably course (they only had one thread of stainless wing nut), so I picked two up.

Did find the knobs on McMaster-Carr, but the stainless ones aren't cheap. For now, the wing nuts will work well enough to get by with, so I'll hold off on ordering them.
