View Full Version : Fuel GNDN Hose (What is it?)

As many of you are aware, I recently undertook the replacement of my car's fuel pump with the new version from DMCH. It seemed to go smoothly and the car is running fine.

Yesterday I took it out for a somewhat extended drive (from Gainesville to downtown Atlanta and back), and after about halfway through the first leg of the trip I started noticing the smell of gas every time I slowed down. Same thing on the way back.

As soon as I got home I pulled off the fuel pump access panel and inspected for leaks. I didn't find any, but in any case I went ahead and re-seated the pump and tightened down the hose clamps.

While inspecting the area I (re)discovered a hose I'd noticed during my first foray into the pump area:

It's right there, running parallel to the fuel lines. So now I have two questions:

1. What is this thing?
2. Why do I smell gas? (I've found similar threads with the same question, and I'm working through that troubleshooting too. The venting hose to the tank seems fine and my clamps are nice and tight. I also do not see any leaks anywhere at all, either around the pump or under the car.)

P.S.: "GNDN" is a Star Trek reference, and is short for "Goes Nowhere, Does Nothing".

That is the drain hose for your A/C evaporator case. Water comes out.

Check the filler cap?

The slighest fuel leak will get into the car as the drain from the windshield is immediately above the pump. This is also small air intake into the A/C.

AH! Thank you! Seems like I should get back in there and angle that hose downward then. :)

First thing I did when I got home was re-seat the filler cap, and then I went to work on the pump and hoses. I haven't driven it since (it requires some extended driving for the issue to show itself) so I'm hoping it was something simple like that. I'm just looking for possibilities since fuel leaks are important to investigate and I want to cover all my bases.

Also check you fuel sender cap. Mine leaked for years. It was SO hard for me to get it seated right.

Also a good call. I'll check that too.

I'm pretty sure it's on there securely but it can't hurt to remove, re-seat, and re-tighten. Thanks.

I used a little synthetic grease on those plastic threads.

I noticed that hanging down going nowhere while reconnecting my coolant lines, was going to deal with it in a few days - good to know it's normal :)
