Watching 101 cars you must drive and they showed this corvette prototype. It was painted silver, mid engine wankel engine with gull wing doors. And the rear lights looked quite similar to our cars.
DeLorean left GM 73ish he must have seen this car. I wonder if this influenced him at all?

I have seen that car in person and it has absolutely zero resemblance to a DeLorean.

I believe there was a picture of this in Stainless Steel Illusion. It was either this or the Pontiac Banshee, I can't remember at the moment.

On page 30 of DeLorean Stainless Steel Illusion is a black and white picture of the Corvette with gullwing doors. Next to the picture it mentions early Seventies and no exact date is given. I'm not sure if that Corvette prototype influenced John DeLorean into making a sports car with gullwing doors.
On page 26 is the Mercedes 300SL with gullwing doors. On page 18 and 19 is the Bricklin with gullwing doors.
You can get your own copy from www.delorean.com.

From what I have read and remember, DeLorean actually helped to develop the prototype. When he left GM he tried to buy the design and rights to use it, and was unsuccessful. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Influence or no (though it's hard to deny certain resemblances, coincidental though they may be) this is a damn fine looking car. I don't know that I'd ever seen it before today.

The double-articulated gullwings look like they would provide the ability to open the door with almost 0 clearance. Cool but probably overcomplicated, and would also probably result in serious compromises to the interior appearance.

Not sure I dig the interior at all, actually.

Ya it's the Aerovette. John headed the project. If my memory is correct they made 2 prototypes then the project was cancelled because it was to expensive.

Not So , John headed the project for the Pontiac Banshee circa 1963 or 64. Very similar to the styling of the later redesigned 68 Vette. They built 2 of those and cancelled the project because they did not want it to compete with the Corvette. (My Source: Kathryn Delorean, I bumped into here Visiting the Corvette Museum following DCS-10 and asked her about her Dad's involvement with the Corvette. She Clarified my misinformation)

There is only one Aerovette that I am aware of though.

Alright thanks for the clarification. I love how car stories seem to play telephone as time goes on lol.
