I just bought an Eagle Premiere starter at AutoZone and now have my original one to turn in. Everyone says don't give it back to AutoZone, but who else wants these. Hervey said he didn't want it, and so did Toby. I'm still waiting on a response from Josh. The core charge from AutoZone was $42, so I'd at least like to get my money back.

Ouch. Hervey used to buy those things but I guess he has plenty of them now. You could put it up on eBay or perhaps advertise on the DML. There are lots of concourse people who love having originals.

Btw, how do you like that cool space ship sound?

Just return it to Auto Zone for your core charge. That's what I did. I don't think anyone wants the OEM unit anymore since DMCH is now selling the Eagle starter.

You've got to be kidding me. When did they start doing this?

Don't know when but about 6 months ago my friend bought the new improved unit and he needed me to help him connect the "extra" wire.

Stuff like this amuses me because several of us were looked down upon for doing this mod 2 years ago. If I remember correctly, a stock starter has a line that goes to the cold start valve, while an Eagle starter does not. I installed mine back when I was running K-Jet and I just taped up the wire that ran to the CSV. I never had a problem.

I got bashed for it yet DMCH can put the exact same product in a car (and charge a $150 markup thank you) and all of a sudden that extra wire doesn't matter anymore.

That "extra" wire does matter. Without it you will crank longer to get started, especially when cold. You could replicate the function with a small relay. Realize that the venders only care about originality or "concours" if they are making money. For the few that insist on such they will have a small stock set aside that they will charge a premium for. If they can make more money selling a substitute that works (even if it requires modification) expect it to become the new standard. Another example would be when all of the OEM fan motors are gone. Pancake fans will be the new standard. Just like the radiators. There are no more OEM plastic rads and why would you want one anyway?

Is the stock starter still rebuildable, should one choose to have it done? I don't quite know what is involved with the process. General question, not a specific question to OP's unit

There is already a relay on the resistor bypass. So all you need to do is connect the extra wire to the other small wire going to the starter.

The new one does sound pretty cool.

I just thought of an idea for your old starter. There was a kid at DCS who kept winning all sorts of parts during the raffle. He didn't have a car but at the rate he was winning, he almost had enough parts to build his own Delorean from scratch. I'm pretty sure he didn't win a starter. Maybe you could work out a deal with him.

Most starters can be, if the owner brings it in fairly soon after it starts acting up. They usually get a new/rebuilt gear drive, bushings, brushes, and the commutator (where the brushes ride) freshened up with sandpaper or on a lathe.
A lot cheaper, especially if you do it yourself.

To me the biggest advantage about the Autozone starter is convenience. It comes with a lifetime warranty, is relatively cheap, and should it ever fail, I can replace it nearly anywhere in the USA free of charge.

Makes sense to me...especially if cash burns a hole in your pocket.
Otherwise, if you do it yourself, you can pocket the savings to use toward whatever.

I had no luck with the Eagle starter. It would not disengage properly and grind against my flywheel. In the end I had my Paris-rhone unit rebuilt at a local shop. it was a little pricey but well worth it, no more grinding.

Sucks to hear DMCH is now selling those units. Guess that's one less thing I'll be buying from them.

Chris,

Sounds like your problem was an isolated case. I have not heard anyone else make the same statement.

Back to the topic question.

1. Door stop
2. Boat anchor
3. Dust collector on your office shelf
4. Conversation piece on your coffee table
5. Place in storage box just in case you NEED it again in 30 years

Chris, Just curious, how many miles were on your car when the original starter failed? Assuming of course that your angle drive/drives have continued to function.

Thanks,

Rod

Hey Rod, my original isn't quite dead yet. It just seemed a bit weak. I've got about 120,000 miles on the car now.

Well, I was able to "pawn" it off to one of my DeLorean buddies. His starter is is even in worse condition. So it worked out for the best.
