Since I first put 3165 back on the road about 2 1/2 years ago i have been chasing a persistent fuel smell problem. Originally it was improperly seated boot. But after re seating the boot several times i started looking elsewhere. It had always been worse in warmer weather. In the summer when sitting at a traffic light with the A/C on the fuel smell would come right through the HVAC system. It was more noticeable when stopped. In slightly cooler weather with the windows open, the fuel smell would be pulled right through the shifter boot into the cabin and was completely nauseating at times.

After finally sealing in the fuel pump boot with RTV black I realized that's definitely not the problem. So i started looking elsewhere. First thing i found was, with the car hot i removed the gas cap and noticed a lot of pressure behind the cap and gas vapors would billow out the fill. So I bypassed the rollover valve with a brass union. This helped a little bit but the fuel smell still persisted. It wasn't as bad but still noticeable. Everything pointed to the charcoal canister but I've been told by several people there has never been a charcoal canister failure in a DeLorean. So I finally got around to pulling out the canister and checking all the lines. All the lines were free flowing and had no tears or kinks. However the ports on the canister were. The port from the tank and the cold start injector were clear. But the port that connects to engine vacuum was clogged solid. After several unsuccessful attempts to find a replacement at a local auto parts store I tried to clear it out with some brakekleen and compressed air. after a half hour of messing with it I did finally get it to clear. I reinstalled it and took it for a half hour drive and NO SMELL!!!!!! So hopefully this is it. Finally!

Just thought I'd pass this along if anyone else is having a similar problem. I believe the top piece that was clogged is called the purge control valve.

Congratulations on finding it and thank you for the information. I'll be checking out mine tomorrow. I don't get a lot of fuel odor but enough after a warm up to think this might have something to do with it.

After finally sealing in the fuel pump boot with RTV black.

Go back in about a month and you'll find that the black RTV is about the consistency of Jell-O.

RTV does not play well with gasoline.

Congrats on the find though. What was it plugged with?

Clogged with what? I had mud daubers get in and clog my A/C drain line. They get into anything. If I leave bathing suits drying outside too long they build mud nests in them. Can't tell you how many I've baked in my BBQ.........

Ethanol is rough on those boots as it is. I'd hate to see what ethanol does to RTV.

Where is the charcoal canister? What is it's function? Is it easy to pull out and check?

Driver side engine bay, the panel on the pontoon. You take off the 4 bolts on the outside (10mm if I remember right) and the canister will come out still attached to the panel. You may have to do some some creative maneuvering to get it fully out of the pontoon but it's simple.

I think its function is to filter the fuel vapors and assist with relieving fuel tank pressure build up. The charcoal itself isn't going to wear out but as DMC3165 found the lines going to it can clog.

It is inside the small compartment on left hand side of engine bay - it stores fuel vapor for either burning off in engine or excess is fed through hardline to front and released through refuel line inside the fuel/clutch fluid compartment.

In my case the port which is connected to engine vacum was clogged. Not really sure what it was clogged with. I think there may be a check valve inside that was jammed. Without engine vacuum being applied to the canister the system couldn't pull in the hot vapors expanding in the tank allowing them to vent out anywhere they could. I think in the end it was mostly venting through the cap.
