OK... I've seen a number of different posts as to how or what sealant should be used when installing gaskets but no definitive answer so I'm going to ask.
I needed to replace my water pump and clutch slave so while in there... inspired by Steve Graham I am refurbing my engine following his process. http://dmctalk.org/showthread.php?1399-How-To-Cleaning-and-Polishing-the-Engine-Block&highlight=polishing+engine

I also intend to remove and regasket my valve covers and timing chain cover, as well as the gasket on the w-pipe to intake manifold and all the o-rings, etc.

I have heard that a dab of grease helps hold the o-rings in place and keep them from slipping wile the mating surfaces are aligned. I assume high temp grease is required here.
My real question is what to do with the gaskets... Do they need some type of sealant? What type? One side or both?

Your help is appreciated.

Cheers.
Steve

I know some advice to use sealant for the valve cover and W-pipe gaskets.
This however seems to be contradictory to the factory instructions.

On both my D's as well as on the ones of friends I worked on, I never used sealant.
I haven't observed oil or other leaks in those places.
You have to make sure the surfaces are smooth and clean though.

O-rings need (clean) engine oil to keep them in place while sliding/moving the intake manifold in position.
You may also use vaseline to keep them slippery.

Success.
